**** The Official Google Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL Thread ****

Hey guys,

I'm considering a switch from my current OnePlus 3T to a Pixel 2. The main reason is the camera. The OnePlus camera shutter is just too slow and most of the photos I take of my kid are blurry. The Pixel camera port works really well for stationary objects though!

Just wondering if you have any suggestions for the best deal? Currently with Three on unlimited data but I've looked at my data usage over the past year and I haven't gone above 4GB.

Doesn't make sense to buy direct from Google as it's £629 and the Pixel 3 is only £10 more! And I can't really afford to pay out that much upfront.

Looking at about £400 for a new one off the Bay. Or there's the contract option...

I'm not sure what your current preferences are but would you cosider a OnePlus 6/6T instead of the Pixel 2? I moved from the 2XL to the 6T and it is a MUCH better phone in all departments - except possibly the camera I'll admit. However, the camera has already improved with 2 updates since release and the Google Cam Port works a treat on it.
I actually found the shutter was very slow on my 2XL after the Pie update. I never passed any remarks at the time as I rarely use the camera anyway but something worth noting.

Thanks for the suggestion. Main thing putting me off the OnePlus 6/6T is the screen size. I'm pretty certain that I don't need or want to go any larger than my current screen size (5.5 inch)

Screen size is certainly bigger but worth seeing them side by side - I can only speak for the 2XL, not the regular 2. But from memory physically speaking the 2XL wasn't that much bigger than the 2 due to the mahoosive chin and forehead on the 2. Someone else here may be able to answer that more accurately. The 2XL and the 6T were physically identical in size.

I bought my 2XL from CPW for £629 in Feb. Then a few months later bought the good lady one second hand of these forums for £450, it was immaculate too. Wish I had done the same :(
Shame you cannot get access to the Members Market on here, there is one for £350 that's only 3 months old. Plus he said he is will to move on the price too :)

Don't concentrate on the screen size, look at the actual handset size.

Yeah, I appreciate that the actual phone size is almost the same (which is good because my jeans pocket can't fit any larger!) but I can only just comfortably reach the top of my current screen with my thumb, while holding it in one hand. Maybe gestures on the Pixel will mean I'll never need to reach further??

Silly decision on the pixel they put the brightness slider on the top instead of on the buttom of the notification drop down. Super annoying.

There's some on the Bay for similar price second hand. Just trying to work out the cheapest option. Should be able to get at least £100 for my OP3T too.

I'm having trouble with this statement. As you are no doubt aware, I've had my fair share of little bugs and issues with the 2XL, but these (touch wood) seem to be mostly ironed out now, and as such, I am having trouble believing that a OnePlus device is 'MUCH' better in every aspect. This makes the 2XL sound like a complete bag of crap, which it clearly isn't. My phone is, I consider, fast, responsive, streamlined, decent screen, excellent camera, very good battery life, good screen, always up to date, good looking (subjective). This OnePlus phone must be revolutionary if it's MUCH better than my 2XL :)

Having had both the 6T and Pixel 2XL, the 6T is a much better device in all areas bar what could be argued the camera.

It's a simple case of newer tech beats old tech here, nothing to say the 2XL is crap, it's still a great device.

In what areas is it 'much' better, though?

Slightly better, yes, I might agree, but even then, not in all areas:-

  • Screen is lower resolution and has a notch; I think the complaints about the 2XL screen are completely overblown.
  • Processor is faster, but probably only about 10% and probably not noticeable in the real world, bar the artificially speeded up animations (which you can do in developer options anyway). In any event, nearly everything responds instantly, and 99% of the time there are no stutters
  • RAM - well OK, I'll concede that one, but at the moment, I doubt it makes any real world difference for 90% of the population, at least at this point in time
  • Camera - no comparison, frankly, I doubt anyone would argue the Pixel isn't considerably better, whether or not gCam is loaded on the OP
  • Updates - Pixel is the only phone bar Android One devices to get updates almost immediately - now one could argue this makes a Pixel owner a beta tester and that is a fair point, but still, I wouldn't mind betting the Pixel is still supported after the OP stops receiving updates
  • Speakers - can't comment but dual firing front speakers sound pretty good to me on the Pixel
  • Headphone jack - well OP is no better off here any longer, Samsung will soon follow.
  • Battery life - again I don't know what the OP is like, but I regularly get 4 - 8 hours SOT and for me that is excellent; is a OP6 really MUCH better than that?! I do wish it had wireless charging.

I am struggling to see how it is MUCH better than a Pixel 2, but then I suspect my definition of much better and yours are entirely different; I would agree that a OnePlus 6 is MUCH better than a Nexus 6 or a OnePlus One, but I feel you are exaggerating. I doubt there are any flagship phones around that are much better than any other across the board, the differences are for the most part, negligible.

That said, I don't know why I continue to argue this point as it seems most people get carried away about small increases... :)

In what areas is it 'much' better, though?

- The screen on OP6T is night and day compared to Pixel 2 XL, it's not even close.
- It's faster than the Pixel 2 XL in all areas, OxygenOS is what stock Android should be.
- It has more RAM and allows for more apps to be open without having to restart.
- Camera - Yes the Pixel 2XL camera is one of the best, the 6T is no slouch however.
- Speakers - Louder on the 6T for sure but I prefer the stereo ones on the Pixel 2XL.
- Battery life - 6T wins here hands down, much bigger capacity and lasts longer, also one of the fastest charging devices around.
- Updates - OnePlus are not far behind in updates once they reach Pixel devices, the timing between the release of updates between the two is negligible.

New tech beats old tech, it's not difficult to understand, i'm by no means slating the 2XL either, I think it's the best compromised Pixel device you can get for the price at the moment, but if camera is not on the top of your list for requirements then 6T > 2XL

I think any argument I would have made has pretty much been covered. If I was being pragmatic I would say the 6T is slightly better in each and every department (bar the camera) and this overall makes it a much better phone. Screen, battery(life and charging), OS, RAM are all better on the OP. I thought I'd miss stock Android which is why I didn't like the Note 9 but Oxygen OS is excellent plus it has little extra features that put it above the 2XL for me.

Having owned both too, I would say 'much' better is pushing it myself. If I had to choose, I would likely go Pixel 2XL based on the poor FPS on the 6T. I do love everything else about the 6T though. If it had a rear mounted FPS, I would probably lean towards that.
