This, This and This. Books 1 to 3 were magnificent, but 4 was atrocious and the rest mediocre. He created a good and recognisable fantasy world but is nowhere near the best fantasy writer of our time if you take consistency into account.

David Gemmell for example was a class above imo.

I like Gemmell a lot, but Martin is just more my thing. He nails that sense of scope like no one else imo and I much prefer his style of writing.

All this discussion just proves that it really is a subjective thing. 4 and 5 are my absolute favourite of the series by a country mile, though I can totally see why some perceive them to be his worst what with so many new characters and plot threads being introduced.

You are heavily, heavily in the minority among critics and fans (or basically anyone with some reasonable critical judgement) if you think books 4 and 5 were his best writing. They were by far his worst efforts (with 4 being particularly pointless) and I have never seen anyone say otherwise until now.

I'm not sure you can lambaste Martin for coherency whilst on putting forward Erikson. :p

Re-read Erikson (if you have been through it once already) when you aren't working out what's going on and are concentrating on the smaller detail the consistency and the thread running through it all is unbelievable.

You also have to note with him he writes as an anthropologist and a blinking cynical one at that so on the first reading what you perceive as inconsistency is the same event but from the perspective of different people's/cultures and also basing their opinions on the facts they have. That's why you get situations with 2/3/4 different interpretations and reasons and they all change again at a later date with more information.

Like yourself I thought parts were a mess until the re-read and knowing the above its pretty staggering what's he woven (but it will always be niche as it's just too vast and opaque)

Think I should be offended but I'll let it pass xD

I just think a lot of his best characterisation and plot points take place during those last 2 books. Sure, there's some dud moments (some elements of the 'Meereenese knot' spring to mind) but generally speaking there's very little I don't like about them. I don't necessarily think it's his best 'writing', but I certainly believe it to be his best 'storytelling'.

Just started S5 on the pre S8 re-watch to refresh the memory. Enjoyable seeing it all back to back. Looking forward to the later ones that I've only seen the once as well :)

Calling it now: Arya is certainly in the Stark family crypt... And is running from an undead Stark as Winter hits Winterfell. That girl normally isn't scared of anything.

Still struggling to get into this series I read the books but can't get into the TV series. I own season 1-3 managed to get to episode 2 on season 3. Will try again at some point.
