Labour frontbencher Diane Abbott "coloured".

I work in a female dominated space and I love it because of just how bitchy they are behind each others backs.

Plus they get amazed everytime I fix something pathetically easy like a loose screw and we don't have to file a 1200kr job out to the service company....

No one says there aren't small variations around the globe. It was the figures they were quoting from over 50 years ago. An average IQ of 70 is ridiculously low. I lived in Zambia for a few years and I know that isn't the case.

Its still contentious as the 2009 WDM study puts it at 80. There is a belief that inherited IQ from the Flynn effect will raise IQ globally as our brains adapt to an ever more complex cognitive environment.
 
Nice to see the thread is full of people saying 'my x/y*insert ethnicity here* friend doesn't find it offensive' comments, offensiveness is always on the individual - I have no opinion about Diane Abbott good or bad, but if she was born when the word 'coloured' was used with negative connotations then it's no surprise she was offended by it. Just so it's not my place to question someone being offended at a comment, nobody should question her. It's not your say.

It’s not so much that people are questioning her right to be offended, it’s more that Diane Abbot used Amber Rudd’s clumsy phrasing to score cheap political points when Rudd was actually saying something in support of ethnic minorities. Furthermore, Abbot hasn’t (to the best of my knowledge) acknowledged Rudd’s apology.

Should Rudd have used that word? No.
Do I think Rudd is racist? No.
Should Diane Abbot have responded in the way she did? No.

Clumsy isn't the word, wilful ignorance is what I'd describe it as. It wouldn't make sense for her to use the term to describe a black person when she was again grew up when it was used in a hateful and demeaning manner. I also refuse to believe the people in this thread claiming to not know it's offensive, that's either a blatant lie or they lived some really sheltered lives.

The fact it was used as a racial term 60 years ago to segregate people in the USA (not the UK) I can understand why some might find it offensive, the vast majority of people won't be offended by it.

What does grind my gears though is her standing up for the isis crazy lady, saying the government killed her baby. Which is complete tosh. She killed the baby by being a complete douche, and revoking her citizenship was the right thing to do, unless your happy with ticking off the country.

God forbid Labour ever get in power, with the likes of Diane Abbot in the cabinet we'd be completely f.....
 
scanned a few pages, lots of (probably) whiteys commenting, genuine question any "non whiteys" find coloured offensive? (i must have been living under a rock as i thought it was ok, i thought saying black might be offensive as "black people" are not actually "black", but brown also seems offensive)

I also object to being called a whitey so have offended myself and may start a fight with myself later

About 12 years ago I was working in a restaurant where there was a black chef. When he finished his shift, some awkward and inebriated well-meaning white folks made conversation with him. Afterwards he was shaking his head mildly amused, stating "WTF century were they from? Coloured? I'm BLACK not 'coloured'".

It's great we've got this thread and have logically and autistically hashed out that it's fine to refer to black people as coloured again. The fact a public figure and politician, who's choices can decide the fate of millions thanks to her role as secretary for the DWP, obviously hasn't done the expected mingling with the public we'd think her position requires and has made this faux pas has shot over most people's heads.
 
The funny thing here is, it's not the usual case of a millennial getting irrationally offended by an older person unknowingly using an obsolete term, it's a case of an older person getting fake offended by another older person unknowingly using an obsolete term xD

It hasn't flown over most peoples heads, it's just as most people would have made the same mistake they don't really care about it. It's no different than somebody still saying LGBT without realising they're supposed to say LGBTQI...JKLMNOP nowadays (unless it's changed again this week).
 
I believe that "Coloured" was often used in the USA and in South Africa, by the "white" majority to identify and to discriminate against a disadvantaged "non white" minority - as such, it is hardly surprising that it is not looked on in a particularly positive way by people who choose to describe themselves in other ways.

I believe it has. Those in defence of it seem to be getting a tad hysterical about SJW persecution, even though the use of 'coloured' was supposed to be phased out decades ago and pre-dates any modern 2015+ SJW ******** like LGBT definitions. As secretary of the DWP, Amber Rudd should've known better than most because she's expected to be in the know about the public she allegedly serves.
