Will no one rid us of this foolish woman?

It's only illeagal on TFL transport. Everywhere else, you can drink. Most trains even sell alcohol. Can't believe people don't know this. Don't you remember the massive drinking party in underground stations when the ban came in 2015/16?

I wasn't working in London prior to 2018 so don't have much experience of using the tube or overground except terminus stations in/out of the capital. It's been a long time since i've seen any buffet services on southern trains.

I used to travel from Newcastle to London 2-3 times a week up until last year. The buffet service was at best intermittent. Maybe 2/3rds of trains had it, the rest it was cancelled or just never made it to the end!

I can only really say what a silly law and hold DA responsible to the same degree as the rest of parliament for allowing bad legislation to be brought about.

This type of law should only exist where someone has taken their freedoms to have a drink too far rather than the broad brush of power that this currently is. I can somewhat understand it being the case for the underground in addition to any consumption including food as its often such a crowded experience though.

I think buffet cars on southern trains vanished when the old slam door rolling stock disappeared. They may have dabbled with a trolley service after that but the old days of the bacon sandwiches etc on the proper buffet car are long gone down here. When I lived in the midlands, Virgin trains used to operate a reasonable buffet car type shop, pre packed sandwiches, some alcohol, magazines etc.

When you're so desperate for alcohol at 1pm that you have to drink it in an area where it is explicilty prohibited by law, it is probably time to seek help for your issues.

Oh give over, as much as I hate Dianne Abbott many people have a drink at lunch and it is very easy to absent mindedly take a can onto the train, the absolute last thing you are thinking about is the stupid drinks law (if you even know it exists), you are thinking about which train to get, which stop to get off etc.

To suggest she is an alcoholic because she's sipping a mojito is absurd and based on a lot of false preconceptions about alcoholism.

I have to say I am surprised that it is illegal as both Virgin and Transpennine serve alcohol on the train.

Well, with abbott, she is either (as shadow home secretary) incompetent (for not knowing about the law) , a hypocrite (for ignoring the law) or in need of help (if she couldn't respect the law).

The law in question applies to tfl run trains in London, due to the large amount of incidents on the overground and underground that were related to alcohol. It doesn't apply to naiional train services, where there are not the same issues.

She should be held to a higher standard as an MP but any scrutiny should be proportional to the actual harm caused by her. In other words, what she did was more or less harmless so other than calling her a boob I say move on.

No, i agree with Dolph.

She is god damn shadow home secretary, she needs to be spotless. Drinking booze, out of cans, on public transport is bottom rung, cheap.
Maybe I've been brought up better?

Same as getting caught doing 34 in a 30?

I thought this thread would be about the prime minister... who 'lost' 114 documents concerning child abuse allegations, as actual home secretary.

No, it's scrotesville. Seriously. I agree, it's made especially more galling with damn sanctimonious this waste of oxygen is....

She'll call anyone racist at the drop of a hat.

It’s a London law, that arguably she should know as a resident, but if she had come from elsewhere, should she have been expected to know that?

You could still say yes, but it seems highly arrogant to expect her to constantly remember this, I assume a lot of people forget it in absent mind, which if her condition is real, she has justification for.

This is nowhere near as bad as leaving classified documents on trains or in bins, obstructing pedogate and lying constantly about their data.

None of those Home Secretaries got fired for those blunders.

Tbh I don't have a problem with people flouting stupid laws, it can make people seem more credible, respectable, and no-nonsense when they ignore some of the ridiculous and unethical laws that this country has.

But they should have, which is somewhat a different discussion.

If they have those problems with the laws, they should be opposing them and changing them where possible rather than just violating them while expecting others to follow them.

She's not from elsewhere, so you're making up a fantasy situation. I'm partial to the odd train beer, but I would never drink on the tube because I know you don't do that (and haven't been able to for 11 years). I can't remember the last time I saw a normal commuter drinking on a tube/overground TFL train to be honest.

Where are you from out of interest? I can understand this kind of ignorance if you're an internet poster from miles away, but she isn't and should know a lot better considering all of the signs everywhere reminding her.

It's a bit like defending someone high up in the airline business for lighting up a cigarette on a plane, which was legal on some European airlines until relatively recently (15 years ago or so).

Name one "Stupid/Unjust" law that was ever removed from the statute book or changed as a result of lawful campaigning and Opposition alone?
