Will this not require explicit developer support? (as with DLSS)

of course, but that is like saying using pixel shaders to create lighting and shadows requires explicit developer support. Unfortunately, code doesn't magically generate from vague ideas.

Nvidia may create libraries that make this easier

No, but historically devs like to write code that is (as much as possible) abstracted away from the hardware.

If using Tensor cores requires explicit developer support - and bearing in mind currently only a handful of cards from one vendor have such cores - it's not going to be a priority for devs to use it, or use it to its full potential.

There will be no Tensor cores in next-gen consoles for a start...

There are abstraction layers already though, so there is little need to know specifics of the tensor cores. Microsoft have a whole machine learning API that is accelerated with tensor cores, and is supported by AMD as well.

The lack of console support is likely not a big issue. The main difference is Tensor equipped GPUs on the PC will simply be faster.

But that's assuming that code written for consoles (which will not have Tensor cores) will be able to be accelerated by Tensor cores, without explicit dev support.

What evidence are you giving for this? I know you said "There will be future applications for Tensor cores", but there's no concrete evidence that multi-plat games would benefit from Tensor cores at all. So are we just talking about devs who make extra effort to get their titles working faster on PC?

e: Or to put it another way: why would you use a machine-learning API on a multi-plat game?

Drivers can be buggy yes though I would say it tends to effect games shortly after their release and games themselves tend to be buggy during those first few months without any help from AMD drivers.

TLDR : get games 6months after release, on sale, patched, better GPU driver support

Not saying it won't happen ever and/or doesn't happen at all but people have been banging the "written for console" drum since forever and it has never panned out like that when games come to PC - you typically either get a hideously unoptimised mess that runs shoddily on everything if the devs are bad or something that runs fairly well on everything if the devs are good.

I don't really see that changing no matter what hardware is in consoles or PCs.

AMD are supposedly announcing their next gen on the 5th March which is before the Nvidia one and IMO this 'leak' is just Jensen trying to grab the tech headlines and distract from the AMD announcement. What's he concerned about? :p

End of the day, nobody knows what either team will bring next, we will have to wait and see, then we can judge.
