Dr. Disrespect permanently banned from Twitch

To the general population these people are nobodies but there are tens of millions of viewers across the streaming sites. Individuals as big as Dr D can have a massive impact on the community for each game they play and the direction that game takes.

To try and brush them aside as irrelevant nerds says more about yourself than it does them.

Certainly offtopic but these players or the guild weren't nomark. I'm not surprised you've came to that conclusion with the level of effort you put into your posts though :)

You regularly post on a computer forum and discuss games on a daily basis, does that make you a massive nerd as well?

Agreed, I suggested this earlier but didn't heed my own advice!

I am by definition a massive nerd. :D Still nomarks tho.

great as long as they stick to playing the games I don't.
like tarkov, fortnite and whatever battle royale game is popular these days.

just cos someone has a lot of fans they can influence doesn't mean they know how to balance a game or what direction it should be taking and anyone who hires them for that purpose likely does it as a marketing ploy

Shows your ignorance. Guy was a Map Designer for Sledgehammer Games when they were making CoD: Advanced Warfare before bringing back the Dr. Disrespect character.

Being a map designer doesn't necessarily mean someone knows how to properly balance a game.

In my experience high profile streamers - even those with relevant game development experience - have a tendency to lean towards game changes that favour their style of play backed up by a small number of hangers on who play with them to stack games :( and rarely produces good results overall.

Not checked this thread for a bit, seems like no extra details have come out yet? I would argue that we are unlikely to hear anything for a while (if ever) at this point. Obviously some legal stuff going on behind the scenes keeping people's lips sealed.

As for the impact streamers have on a game and it's community I see it as a double edged sword. Take Path of Exile for example, you've got several high profile streamers/content creators for the game that put out some really helpful and informative content, whether that be character guides or just explaining how all the mechanics work. Some even work with the game developers and appear at official events.

It's great stuff for new players, the problem is so many people follow their guides that these streamers effectively dictate what a lot of the go to character builds/items are throughout the season. As such they influence the in game trade market massively, causing huge demand for certain items and driving prices up, effectively pricing out a lot of the casual playerbase. It skews people's perspective when they follow these 'Cheap Build' guides and don't realize that these streamers play the game as a full time job, sometimes with their own guild backing them up farming and sharing currency/items, as well as receiving donations from other players/viewers. Then they get disappointed when the build doesn't perform nearly as well as the streamer's version that has 100x the currency investment than theirs did.

Some know the impact they have and just play the field, I've seen some blatant videos made in order to drive prices up/down, it's smart going and the nature of the game I suppose, but it's annoying as hell when you've finally saved up for the item you want, go to check the marketplace and see that it's quadrupled in price over night.

No, but it does mean he has a hell of a lot more insight that pretty much anyone on this forum, and most other high profile streamers into the game design process, including the balancing process. Balance and map design are not independent of eachother.

didn't he only ever make one map?

I used to make maps for counterstrike back in the day, it's not exactly hard and I'm sure the tools got easier.

doesnt mean he knows anything about balancing games or providing good feedback

right because they get early access to titles usually before most people...

doesnt mean anything, some of us beta tested wow and a bunch of other mmos when they were still early in development and the servers were only online a few hours a week.

it doesn't make us experts at game design

Balance and map design are not independent of eachother.
they pretty much are unless your balancing your game around a certain map type then every other map has to be almost exactly the same

As if you're putting you making some maps for Counterstrike equal to someone who was doing it at for game developer professionally.

Game balance and map design are very much related. The two do not exist in isolation.

many of the greatest maps for the source engine games were not created by professional developers, you do get that?

was CS even made by professional developers, team fortress? what about a bunch of other games that started as mods.
no doubt dr direspect has more experience than anyone who ever created a map that wasn't employed on minimum wage.

did this guy make one map or not? one entire map? what was his actual job title in the company?

oh he went from community manager to level designer, yup hes sure an expert in building games.

probably why carmack and gabe retired
