My ex had a 65 plate 118d sport (although a manual) and I loved it, great handling, not enough power to get too out of shape but enough to have fun in it, liked the styling and it felt well screwed together even if it arguably isn’t,much as I’d say most e series BMW’s seemed far better built than the subsequent f series cars...

The one thing that spoilt it for me was it being a manual, the 8sp auto transforms the drive very much for the better.

i just loved how it drove, the auto box was totally amazing

Not too terrible then! As you say, nice and very competent cars (when they work) - its a shame that they are fragile :)

You've got to be joking right? The last of the E series models that preceded the F series (IE 1, 3 and 5) were about the worst BMW have ever made. Not a patch on the models before or after.

no idea which ones which
but im sure the one i had was a 65 plate 118d (could be wrong) id prefer that over my focus

True IMO of the earlier cars up until approx '03. The E38/39/46 were very nice cars and (IMHO for their time, ignoring them being dated), much better than the F cars. However, the E90 for example, the less said about that the better?

Fair comment- Like Jez says, I’m thinking of the good examples of that era which I’ve owned, e36, e46,e39,e38.

The e60, e90 etc then yes, they’d started the downward slide by then, which I’m afraid seems to be continuing.

No. LED headlights were never standard across the range. When the car was facelifted in 2015, LED headlights were introduced as an option and were standard fit on M Sport and M Performance models.

They don't offer a 1.2 or a 1.4 petrol engine in the 1 Series. The smallest engine is the 1.5 3 cylinder petrol engine in the 118i. Though be careful, despite being the engine out of the Mini where it's pretty decent for some reason I've always found it very thirsty in the 1 and 2 Series.

Did they do any good lights pre facelift ?

Yes, Xenon headlights were optional prior to the facelift.

Yes, the E39/E46/E38 era were very much a high point in BMW quality. The subsequent E60/E90 was quite a downward step IMHO. The F Series are a massive improvement - I am very fussy about this sort of thing and have found my F10's to be worthy successors to my E39. The G30 5 Series is good too.

Some may have seen I had a thread the last couple of weeks and this is the outcome. So glad I decided to go bigger and the 6 series is so much more comfortable to 6ft3 me over the 4 series. Got it over the weekend and had so far about 200 miles off enjoyment, many more to come. Gave it a good wash this afternoon as the weathers been nice and got some wax on.

The f & g series seem hit & miss, my ex’s f20 was great, my brother in laws f10 not so good, ironically he thought his previous e60 was more reliable as in it never broke down whereas his f10 did a few times, as did the X5 that replaced that, so given reliability was a deal breaker to him.....

He now has a Range Rover. :p :D
 
Are we talking about build quality or reliability? They are two seperate things - you can have a car with the worst build quality ever that is super reliable and vice versa. The quality of the cabin etc in the F10 is good IMHO.

As for reliability weirdly the F10/F11 are the most reliable cars either myself or my Dad have ever owned. It has now been nearly 7 years since we started buying them and we've each had two (He's moved on to a G32 now) and none of them suffered a single major issue. I was very surprised.

The most unreliable car I have ever owned remains my E39 :D
 
My E60 M5 was waaaaay more reliable than my F11 535d. And my E46 325ci soldiered on with just a bowed radiator and some suspension issues.
 
Are F10 Alpina D5s’ worth the £20k~ premium for a 2013/85kmiles~ worth it? To let’s say a newer 53xd f10?

I ask as I’ve been having a major itch to get one. I really like them but I wouldn’t want to be “throwing” money away, if that makes sense.

Would it even be viable to buy a diesel now?

Didn’t even realise you could get a g30 around that price.

Fox, do you not feel the Alpina will hold its market value at a better rate than a g30 in a couple of years time?
