Think the essence of the original point is being taken out of proportion, which primarily surrounded the rationale behind pouring money into a new vehicle for it to in effect resemble another higher in the range.

It's not as if the comparison is between a 1 series and an X7. The 4 and 8 in this instance are both coupes and neither are cheap.
An M4 competition is £75k whilst an M8 competition is £125k. The M4 is much cheaper.
Saying its not as bad as a 1 series vs an X7 is a silly comment. Nor is saying neither are cheap. By your definition you consider all cars above £75k not cheap, in which case you might as well start comparing it to a 570s? Another coupe.
I could equally say that paradigms 'massively different' comment in response to my initial post on the looks is a bit of an exaggeration as I don't particularly agree there but hey, everyone's entitled to a view. You're also referring to the variants interchangeably :

Not sure what exactly are you trying to prove or disprove, as I would guess that by your definition of the M4, the M8C would surely sit in the same category of sports car you can take on track. The obsession with either being right or trying to prove others wrong on here is incredible.

They do not attract the same buyer. It's silly to say they are interchangeable.
An M4 buyer will not suddenly consider an M8.
You are trying to make the differences sound trivial by giving a separate outlandish comparison of the 1 series and X7 as the yardstick of being different. Completely different prices, but to you they are both expensive cars and are therefore similar.

It's you that's drawing reference to both models to somewhat push the validity of whatever point you're attempting to get across. It's either the 8 series or the M8C you are speaking of, and in trying to be correct, you're moving the goal posts by mentioning both.
Factual or anecdotal? Happy to concede if you can provide any factual evidence to support this, although I would agree that an M4 buyer wouldn't suddenly consider a brand new M8.
I've already pointed out the fundamental basis by which they are comparible, the stark variance in price is only apparent when comparing brand new with brand new, guessing we're going with the £125k M8C then?
Unless there have been any fundamental changes since the release of G15 to the extent where you are missing out on something so significant that serves as a justification for making buying a brand new one essential, I can't see why an approved used M8C wouldn't be considered as an alternative as this isn't at all much more than a G82 M4.
Given the price of both in relation to the avg spend on a car in the UK, I do stand by my comment that objectively, neither are cheap. If by your standards they are in fact cheap, then well done for being successful enough to enjoy such things.

Of course its possible someone may consider and M4 and instead decide on an M8, but it's unlikely and they'll be in the minority. Just like sometimes people consider a 430 Coupe and go on to buy an X5.
Generally though, the cars are different and only look similar on paper - yes, they are both fast 2 door BMW coupes. But this is where the similarity ends, in the same way that the similarity between a 3 Series and a 7 Series ends at '4 door BMW saloon'. The 8 Series is a big, heavy, fast GT designed to drive you across Germany in a few hours in complete comfort with crushingly effortless performance. Whereas the 4 Series is the sporty coupe of the BMW range - it's for people who value sharpness and involvement over cossetting luxury. It is rare the two buyers overlap - but obviously it does occasionally happen.
What's the Porsche equivalent of an M3?

I’ve noticed a lot of people have moved from bmw m to Porsche recently.
Perhaps they got fed up of the M tax and their car’s depreciation curve.

...anyway, lovely couple guys - changed my brake pads and did an oil service (I supplied pads/sensors, oil and filter) for £250 on an F11 - is this a good price? If so I'm going to drop my wife's car to them as well, as I have no complaints.

You could surely have changed the pads and swapped the oil in less time than it took to make all of those calls and then drop it down/walk back/wait or whatever you did 
I understand outsourcing complex engine or transmission work of course, and i also understand using a main franchised agent to maintain the paperwork where it matters to you, but why bother with a place like that....

That was the plan, that's why I'd bought everything separately but my wife said something like "why are you planning to do something you've never done before the day before we take the kids on a road trip...?" Which swayed me
