There is a difference between dudebro FPS and games like half life, deus ex, or portal. Most people know exactly what you mean when you say dudebro, but I didn’t know people could get offended by it.

I have played all kinds of FPS games (my favourite genre) since the 90’s.

I have played competitively in multiplayer leagues and ranked play, and also played SP FPS games avidly.

But I can honestly say I have never heard the term dudebro until today!

So, as a layman who has obviously been living under a rock, I went and looked it up!

in summary for those on the forum like myself:

“A dudebro is a humorous or derisive slang term stereotyping a young, usually white man as a partying prep or jock who is unaware of his own privilege.

(slang) A hypermasculine man, especially one who is misogynist and/or homophobic. ... Alternative spelling of dude-bro. noun.”

How on earth anyone could possibly misconstrue that it might / might not be derogatory calling someone's tastes "dudebro" is totally beyond me :D

I knew what the term meant, but apparently when applied to gaming, it's totally just a classification... that bit I didn't know.

Once again, never heard of Boomer Shooter.

But having looked it up, they are definitely my bag. I cut my FPS teeth on the original Doom franchise and sunk countless hours into Quake and later Quake 2 and Quake 3 (we don’t talk about Quake 4!). :p

Have you heard of any genres other than FPS? ;) What about Metroidvania, Soulslike, Roguelike, Roguelite, or ARPG? I hope none of those are offensive to anybody!

:D Yes I’m not that bad!!

I enjoy a lot of other genres to be fair.

Im familiar with Roguelikes and Soulslikes (playing Elden Ring at the moment and I’m on NG+++ on Demons Souls). It’s the antithesis of a Rogulike but I’m thoroughly enjoying BroForce too!

Love a bit of Diablo, and the recent remake of Gauntlet. Path of Exile is a banging good game as well that I need to go back to.

My other big genre love is RTS. Sadly it’s a neglected area these days but oh man I have lost so many hours to the likes of StarCraft, C&C Generals, Total Annihilation and Dawn of War etc.

Since I more or less gave up PC gaming I have played a lot less FPS (I mean still a lot, but a lot less than before! :p ).

Still not sure about the Dudebro thing. I play tons of FPS but also really like other genres too. Maybe I’m a closet Dudebro?!

@Kreeeee Thanks for the heads up. Will see if my laptop can hack it.

@BuffetSlayer Don't worry, Kreeeee is a dude bro at heart as he has alluded to local MP halo sessions in the past and no doubt they were drinking too :D

I wonder if Pro Evo fell into that category back in the day.

An awesome Boomer Shooter released on PC Game Pass recently, Prodeus.

It's a great mix of Doom I / II and Quake 1 with a modern take on both blended together.

Thanks for mentioning that; I'll have to take a look; I'd completely missed it. I'll definately give that a go; spent more hours than I can count on old retro shooters like Doom and Duke, not my favourite genre, but I've definately got a soft spot for it (also picked up Doom 64 when it released on Switch)

Agreed, Doom 3 is cool/interesting, but it's borderline a different game series, very different feel and take. Doom 64 feels very much like a direct sequel, for good and bad.

Doom 2016/Doom Eternal feel much more 'Doom [4/5]' than Doom 3.

Doom 64 is also awesome. It's the real Doom 3.

All this talk of Doom has given me a hankering! :p

Agreed, Doom64 is awesome.

But I also like Doom 3 too. I agree, it has a different feel, and whilst I am no expert it certainly seems in keeping with the Doom lore. That is to say it’s about a human Marine fighting hell demons!

It’s gritty and claustrophobic and, for me at least, more engaging because you aren’t running around in wide open spaces easily annihilating hordes of demons.

It’s a more story driven, intimate take on the franchise and I like it. The VR version is also really good fun too!

Oh yeah, Doom 3 is still a good game (and I also enjoyed Quake 4, possibly more than Doom 3), but, especially now with Doom 2016 and Eternal, it feels more like a spin off, with Doom 64 as the true Doom 3, if you see what I mean. Doom 1, 2, 64, 2016 and Eternal feel more like the chronological sequels. Doom 3 is a good, but different take, so more worthy of being a series spin-off.

If doom3 was the one with the flashlight I really didn't enjoy it.

The original had you swapping the torch and the gun (you couldn't have both) for more jump scares, I guess. But they altered that in the BFG edition and you had a torch mounted on your gun/suit.

Yeah, can’t really disagree. Although I feel Doom Eternal went a bit to platformy and cartoony for me, and I much prefer Doom 2016 out of the two.

But then where does Final Doom fit in the equation?

Stand-alone masterpiece or level expansion pack?

Discuss! :p
