Sold on Ebay, buyer is round the corner.. can I hand deliver?

Are you prepared to refund the postage if they moan?

I did it for a cheap item but in retrospect it would have been less hassle to just drop it in the postbox. EBay has changed the system since then with the requirement of tracking for protection as well.

Happened to me one time too, I just messaged him and said I will refund postage and drop it off, he told me to keep the postage as a thanks for hand delivery.

The guy turned out to be about 80, so I felt safe he wasn't going to cause any trouble.

Doesn't eBay do a QR code type thing for collection now?

So one or other of you scans it to prove the exchange happened.

I've sold a small number of items for collection, but had never bothered as people paid cash, but I'm sure it exists.

It was £18.01 + £2.99 1st class signed delivery. So I think asking him if he's ok with £20 cash and I'll cancel the sale on Ebay works best right? Saves him £1 and saves me err.. whatever the fees were going to be? If I do the QR code thing I'll still have to pay some fees right.

If I cancel will I have to pay Ebay any fees? It's not clear.. https://www.ebay.co.uk/help/selling/getting-paid/canceling-transaction?id=4136

I don't think he's a scammer, he lives in a very nice road with big houses and his username is hisname1969 so he's 50-odd :p

I think Ebay scan the messages for certain text, so be careful if you try to cancel the sale through there (know from experience :p).

If someone hand delivered it to me I wouldn't be fussed about the postage costs.. you're paying for it to be delivered.. doesn't matter who delivers it?

Click the button that creates a qr code that the buyer scans when you deliver. It's very simple.

Ebay has this to prevent exactly the issues that could happen. Done this plenty and it works well.

Yep, they've had this for a couple years at least and it's a great feature. I've used it a few times in the past and just scan the code when you deliver it so there's no come back.

Ooh sneaky! Good point re the costs. He's agreed the full price inc postage so hand delivery at an agreed time is way better than whatever Royal Mail can do! But if I do it via Ebay I lose £2.99 in fees (I just checked).

Where does one find that option? As above though if I do this I'd lose the £2.99 in Ebay fees.

£2.99 postage is your fee to walk the 10 minutes round trip is it not? Why does it matter if its the postman or you. Just package it up as you would have done anyway and then walk and post it.

How expensive is the item?

If it's like under 50 I'd do it by hand.

I did it once ages ago with an expensive item. I pretended to be a courier and got the guy to sign a piece of paper for it! :D

Two pages and nobody has suggested pooping through the buyer’s letterbox if they claim not to have received it? Standards are slipping.

Because I'd have no proof it was delivered unless I pretended to be the postman and got him to sign for it.

I just messaged him to take it offline, lets see if Ebay bust me. Worth it to save £3 fees!

You'd have no proof if you post it unless its tracked/proof of postage which would you bother with that for such a small item? Phone case = padded envelope, 1st class stamp and postbox.

All you need is proof of Posting.
Then you can claim 20 pounds from royal mail. And it's free.

Personally I always get it as its free.

Sure but to get that you have to go to a post office, can't just post the item in a postbox.

Ah true. For my the post office is near the supermarket so it's no issue. I also don't own stamps! :D

But I agree. For s such a low value. I wouldn't go out of my way to get proof

Well my message got through the eBay bots and he’s fine for me to drop it off tomorrow, but the cheeky beggar has said “is the £18 correct for you?” Err no!? I’ve confused myself here..

He’s already paid me £18+2.99 postage. I’m saving him 2.99 by dropping it round, and saving myself 2.99 (I think, does that sound right?) on fees. But if I only get 18 for it I may as well have posted it lol

I honestly don’t know how people do so much eBay, it drives me nuts :D

Yes the £18 is the correct amount.
You are saving the buyer the £2.99 in postage costs, and you are also saving yourself the trouble of going through the postal system. Can't expect the buyer to pay the £2.99 if you are not using the postal service as then the item would have been sold for £21.99 instead of £18.99 as you are adding an extra £2.99 on top of the item cost due to no postal costs. It wouldn't be fair at all to expect the buyer to pay the extra amount.
