Murder of 87 year old in the street

Knife crime and muggings will probably go up sharply with the rising prices/energy prices and general cost of living.

If you can't afford to live, as in actually, by the definition, cannot afford to live, then people like this will resort to the alternatives.

Suppose it boils down to what rights do you think someone murdering someone else with clear CCTV evidence has. I do think a lot of the current laws we have given the technology available today are outdated personally. Take this case, on the face of it in my opinion a jury trial isn't needed.
And the people start to easily be framed with deepfakes. Slippery slope.

Do you realise how dangerous and frankly stupid this is?

It's still not that simple though. Being devils advocate, with todays technology you can also have deep fakes. So what if someone produced a deep fake video of you being a murderer, that's it then? You're guilty, no trial no appeal just judgement and rope.

I'd be very careful about wanting to casually throw away our checks and balances in the justice system due to some heinous but rare crimes.

CCTV footage is available at the time of the murder, mutliple cameras and tracking. It's fairly easy to see edited video in the raw data. We're no where near having the tech to produce multiple deep fake videos on the fly.

An NSA/Pixar joint venture probably could if the security of the USA depended on it.

Everyone else, not so much.

Maybe, but I’m not having it that this guy robbed the old man just to pay his electric bill or buy some groceries, rhis was a robbery and murder borne out of pure criminality, plain and simple. A stain on society that needs to be scrubbed out.

Of course, but we're now not just talking about this one case, but the application of the law in principle.

Not every case is going to be clear cut, a line needs to be drawn and when you have a line some people will always fall the wrong side of it.

Lots of advancements in technology have been thought to be an infallible aid to proving guilt, but mistakes (and intentional fakery) still plague the system. And tbh, if/when its so clear cut then the jury trial wont take long will it! :) And when mistakes/intentional framing happens, at least they can be rectified when you haven't killed the suspect :p

I'm perfectly content with "obvious murderers" still going through the checks and balances to assign their guilt, but im still opposed to society being able to impose the death sentence (even if at times I can personally agree a certain person deserves it) from a philosophical stand point.

My point is that in general the 'law' is outdated and archaic when taking into account modern technology.

You still have certain checks and balances so to speak, other evidence such as dna etc. but what you dont need in cases such as this - clear, irrefutable proof or murder - is a trial by jury to ascertain guilt or innocence.

I thought trial by jury of your peers was still a thing?

Forget this case, but in general. Are you saying "except where it's blatently obvious"?

You appear to have much more knowledge of the situation than the rest of us...
