Queen Elizabeth II has passed away - keep posts civil and respectful

But at least with a democratic vote we'd be safe with the knowledge that whichever jobsworth finds themselves in a position of power, good or bad, is down to the people. We'd only have ourselves to blame/thank and even then in most cases it would only be 8 years. I'd much rather that system than one where it's just forced upon you and you have to accept it for what it is.

These last few days have been wild to me. The enforced mourning trickling into avenues of daily life which it shouldn't effect, the cancelling of some sporting events really wound me up. Hearing presenters put on a sombre front or only allowed to play melancholy music for X amount of days. It's all just a bit 'Dear Leader' for me.

Blame the authority for that particular sport. Cricket went ahead after one day break as did horse racing and many others. Just because the FA is so useless is not the fault of the monarchy.

It was actually the boxing that was cancelled and I think that's even worse as you have fighters training to a specific day and having to cut weight now it was all for nothing and they don't get paid. So my issue is more with the BBBoC but calling them useless would actually be a compliment.

:D :D

I also think Charlie missed a trick by going with King Charles III, since he could have chosen any of his other names it would have been cool to have now had King Arthur II :p

King Arthur was largely myth and legend and I don't know whether anybody has pinned him to a date. Sometime during the dark ages.

Therefore Charles could just have been King Arthur IMO.

Edit, and Camilla, Guinevere.

Sorry to distract from seriousness for a moment.

Err we just had that with Boris.
The head of State is the King.

Replacing the Monarchy with an elected system would be replacing the King with an elected President.

If its a separate election to the party elections we might end up with Nigal Farage as President. God help us!

The problem is what it is replaced by.

If you think the American Presidential system is better then you'll love it when Britain votes in a Trump-like figure.

Personally I'd have a European style - a PM and parliamentary government but with an elected Head of State with quite limited power similar to Ireland, Italy or Germany.
Basically an elder statesman who to most extent is apolitical anyway.

Don't know about those others, but in Germany the President is chosen by elected representatives (composed of the Bundestag and state representatives) rather than elected by the populous. Personally, I think a directly elected Head of State would be a bad idea. They will inevitably become politicised and create a conflict between their role and the role of the rest of the elected system.

I think if I was creating a country from scratch I'd design such a system, but as it is I don't think it is a good idea to break a successful system for minimal potential gain.

I've just taken a virtual walk with Google Earth up the Royal Mile. I see what you mean now and I doubt the photos tell half the story. Hills always look less steep in media than they do in real life.
