I know a landlord that's just halted all her new tenancies due to the interest rates and their potential rises. Rental prices are already pretty high in general, they're going to go through the roof. Just in time for winter and people suffering the energy rises too.

The knock on effect from this budget is quite something.

Austerity ++ coming.
'It comes as one of Liz Truss's closest political allies doubled down on the government's economic policy, with warnings that major cuts in public spending are to come.

Levelling Up Secretary Simon Clarke, who is among the prime minister's inner circle, told The Times that the British people need to expect significant cuts in public spending, because for too long the West has been living in a "fool's paradise".

Landlords might attempt to put them through the roof, people just won't pay.

Lest we forget that the people who shorted the pound and made millions (which was essentially a cash transfer from the Bank of England to them) are probably poised for another round - a sizable sell off with Sterling could be enough to spook it into another spiral.

I don't think it's hyperbole to say that this is actually a serious national security risk right now, because the currency is at the mercy of any foe willing to take a risk.

It legitimately amazes me that shorting is allowed.

I can't conjure the words the accurately convey how much I despise the Tories and their enablers.

This country has really been ruined in the last 12 years under a Con government and crap-shows like Brexit have only made things so much worse. I don't have any hope in Labour either but I'd rather have them in instead of the Tories anyday but yeah, this is super depressing. I'm going to switch off from current events for the sake of mental health.

Me and my partner are already seriously talking about immigrating when we hit our 40's. I just don't want to live here anymore.

We're planning to head to Scotland and hope to vote to leave the Westminster influenced cesspit.

Plan B is to leave completely, the benefits of having an EU partner. That's fine for us but I despair at the trajectory Britain has been on for a while now, I thought we were better than that.

In Scotland, the landlords have no option to raise rents so it'll be interesting to see how that plays out.

As long as something can be traded then it can be shorted, so I don't think there's any way to prevent it other than restrict the ease of which it can be done e.g. ban specific funds etc. To be honest, if we get to the stage where we need to ban trading our currency then that in itself would be a dire admission.

Well he's right about the fools bit. We really are.

full quote V so that would be UK versus de/fr ... which has been catalysed by Brexit too

In an interview with The Times, Clarke, a member of the “quad” of most senior ministers, said Truss had no choice but to take radical action to limit public spending.
He said: “My big concern in politics is that western Europe is just living in a fool’s paradise whereby we can be ever less productive relative to our peers, and yet still enjoy a very large welfare state and persist in thinking that the two are somehow compatible over the medium to long term.

The British taxpayer expects their government to work as efficiently and effectively and possible, and we will deliver on that expectation.
Not all the measures we announced last week will be universally popular. But we had to do something different.
We had no other choice

We? the shared consciousness with Liz, she had a knife to my throat ? press still seems to be struggling for a definitive nick-name for Truss
was considering she has shared idiocy with Mr Bean.

Yeah Scotland would be good. I have a friend there and we talk politics a lot and she believes that it's only a matter of time before Scotland gains independence.

I've never been a patriotic person but always had a kind of "this place ain't perfect but it's ok" kind of love for this country but that died in 2016 when we voted leave. Crap like this makes me surprised I'm not a raging alcoholic or have a drug problem to cope with the crushing despair of being a British citizen for the past decade.

I vote SNP but I didn't vote for independence and I'm not convinced I would vote for it if we have another referendum. My preference is more devolution; I want an independent government and we don't need an independent country to achieve that. We have a level of independent government now, and it's healthy to see Nicola Sturgeon contrast the UK government with alternative policies.

I mean, contrast Surgeons latest comment about why she won't mirror the tax policies of the conservatives, against the utterly moronic comments from Truss about Sturgeon being an attention seeker. She's absolute miles ahead of Truss and she was miles ahead of Johnson, too.

I'd love to see a Labour/SNP coalition in Westminster as it would accurately reflect the Union, but tragically Labour are more aligned with the Tories and the brutal truth is that they have to be because that's what the English electorate wants.

Exactly, this is fantastic.

Replacing Boris with Truss has caused the Tory mask to slip and the general public is completely rejecting them finally.

I would point out that the two Conservative manifestos that were voted on by the country, there was plenty in there about keeping taxes low. The two Labour manifestos that pledged the reverse, both lost. The general public don't generally vote for higher taxes but you would not think that, reading social media, but it has proven true.

In the 2017 manifesto, it says that corp. tax would be 17%, in the 2019 manifesto it pledged to freeze the big taxes.

What Sunak was doing (forced by Johnson) was to not only ignore this but go in the other direction entirely, I doubt taxes would have been worse under a Corbyn/McDonnell led government.

We will find out over the next 4 days, what the other plans are, as the conference starts but I don't see what is happening as a big departure from the 2017/2019 manifesto pledges, Truss is doing what she said she would do and what the membership want her to do.

Switzerland is amazing if you can move there, people in the UK don't seem to know how bad we have it compared to some other countries where everyone is basically middle class even if they have "crap jobs"

Mcdonalds workers are on like 35k €....

Starbucks barista is a 45k job.... in the UK its £9.99 an hour

7950x at OCUK is £799.99 in Switzerland its €829 which would be 751quid at exchange rates...

So better wages by a huge margin but prices still competitive with our economy even though we get paid far less for the same jobs.

A basic McDonalds meal costs about £14.50 so it’s swings and roundabouts

Is the cost of living measured in graphics cards now? What job did you do when you lived in Switzerland?
