I think it's a combination of them actually being able to shift a lot more than 1,000 at the high price and while the fixed costs of design and tapeout etc. might mean that the top chip takes a while to make a profit, Nvidia are also trying to maintain their "premium" brand and setting a high price for their halo part makes sense for them
I'm not doubting that costs have gone up, but for far too long AMD have released cards with prices which simply do not look like they care about increasing their <20% marketshare. While 7nm wafers were tight that might have made sense but what about before that when HBM2 was too expensive etc. N33 at least looks like it is design for high volume.
Yes, margins are nice but with such high fixed costs, volume matters a lot.
If that's a months wages to you, you can't afford one anyway...
I was referring to the UK average salary, which is ~£1,800
Why would someone buy an AMD card over an Nvidia card if they both cost the same, but the Nvidia card is significantly better/more feature rich?

Slightly slower, slightly cheaper - either buy or don't, we don't really care. Their focus is elsewhere. I'd actually categorise AMD's approach in this sector as "Maintaining a presence".

The fact they only have 20% of the market vs Nvidia's 80% would suggest it's not actually that competitive.

Also agreed. I was annoyed when AMDs truaudio didn't really go anywhere because audio does seem to have been forgotten.
I'm not disagreeing with you that most sound comes from reflection off surfaces, but to say you hear very little through a wall is too broad - it'll all depend on the wall and its ability to dampen sound.
Nvidia and AMD can charge what they want. That doesn't mean I will buy it.
Nvidia has charged what they want and I want those GPUs to rot on the shelf till they price them more sensibly. If AMD follows Nvidia's lead then I will wish them the exact same.
This generation, the company that gets my money is the one who delivers good performance at a fair value. Or some miner on ebay if both companies mess up.

7900 xtx - £1450

£749 for a 7800xt and I might be interested depending on performance increase over the 6800xt. Not holding my breath though, might pick up a 6900XT or 3080 instead!
