I started this yesterday, last played a year ago, what’s the go to, is it still conquest and breakthrough for popular modes, any new decent maps?
Yeah, Breakthrough is your meat grinder mode where you have about 50 people fighting over an objective and they currently have a 'Seasons Breakthrough' playlist which is all of the new maps since the game launched. I tend to play Breakthrough if I'm levelling up weapons and just want to get 60 kills and 50 deaths...

Conquest usually has an 'Exodus Conquest' playlist which is 64p conquest on a mix of 2042 maps, the new maps and also maps from Portal (so BF3 maps like Caspian Border and Noshahr Canals) - that's the mode I play the most when it's available.

Right now it's not there as they've got a 'Flashpoint Conquest' which is just for the new map - which is actually quite good and I'm really enjoying. The C, D and E points are all really nicely connected and the flow between them is great.

In terms of the new maps, Exposure was released first and I think is a brilliant map. Stranded came in season 2, kinda average to me - then Spearhead in season 3. I really like Spearhead, great map and plays well on all modes and player counts.

They've also reworked a bunch of the original maps and both Orbital and Breakaway are now brilliant, easily in my 'S' tier for maps in this game along with Exposure.

Starting to enjoy this now, definitely improved a lot since the early release months.
Only played the new flashpoint map but it seems a lot more detailed than the 2042 maps at release which felt really sterile and empty, but perhaps they have improved them as well?

How do you unlock other weapons such as the AK74, do I need to play portal?

Yep, its pretty good now, Im enjoying it a lot lot more than the new COD. Very good maps, with a decent rotation. This is a different beast to the game we got at launch.
I YouTubed best settings and the game feels great. Smooth and fast. Just playing the conquest rotations new maps and old. It’s pretty great. I die a lot but I’ve not played any online shooter since this launched 18 or so months ago. Pretty rusty! Just playing medic and healing/reviving and capping points. I die a LOT but it’s still manic fun :)

Same, I just copied some HUD settings to reduce the size and such.

I was rusty as well at first but after a few days Im getting slightly better. Apart from one map, Ive played all new maps so far on conquest and breakthrough, can't speak for many of the older maps as not played them all, but the new maps feel a lot more alive and more detailed.
I may play some portal next as want to unlock some weapons.

Just picked this up on Ebay for next to nothing. PS5.
It's free with PS Plus this month...!
Yep 32 vs 32 and rotates old and new. 128 players is a bit mental for me lol. I think the mode is temporary though but it’s definitely good fun.

It’s really popular too even with cross play off.
It's also great because it doesn't typically include the new maps that are a bit rubbish that haven't yet been reworked (Hourglass, Discarded etc.). I played it for a bit last night and it's really great going from the reworked Breakaway map, to the new Flashpoint map and then to Noshahr Canals from BF3.

Noshahr Canals is till one of my favourite maps. Played last night for a few hours medic at first but kept getting wrecked by tanks so gave engineer a go running around tanks on land mine suicide runs. Fun!

Yeah, it's just a brilliant map. I remember playing BF3 back on the Xbox 360 before I played it on PC and I think I'd just sit in Noshahr Canals 24/7 servers non-stop...

The anti-tank mines are great in 2042, I don't think a lot of people realise how useful they can be and how they completely cut off certain routes for tanks.

I've been playing with the new recon specialist Blasco mainly - her disruption gadget is great for locking down an objective and causing total panic, also really handy for being protected from 'spots' whilst you're in the area.

How do I unlock the AK74?

It says to play portal but even then when I switch Era and select a class with the AK74, once im in the match I can't use the loadout I selected.

Also once unlocked can I use the BF3 weapons in BF2042 maps.

I don't think you have to play Portal, it should have a challenge on it when you hover over the weapon in the collection tab on the main menu.

It looks like the challenge is 100 kills and assists with either the AM40 or AKS-74u and then 8 kills with an assault rifle from a distance of 25m or less in one round.

You can unlock it either in regular 2042 modes but also playing solo vs. AI.

My suggestion would be to be play solo vs. AI on conquest, pick the AM40 assault rifle and then just go on a bot/AI murdering spree to get it unlocked!
