Cold war never ended, and Russia gave afgan weapons to kill western troops, just like North Korea, and those after.

The cold war was a global war of competing ideologies. Russia doesn’t really stand for anything anymore except wanting to be seen to be relevant.

The patriot air defence system is getting deployed well ahead of schedule.

This is because the US planned a 3 month training regime for Ukrainian operators to learn the system. But Kyiv decided to send 65 very experienced air defence operators to the U.S and they were able to learn Patriot in half the planned time, a full 6 weeks ahead of schedule.

The U.S general in charge of getting the Ukrainians trained up said he is very impressed at how quickly they mastered Patriot, he says it's down to the large amount of combat experience the guys have and learning Patriot proved to be much easier than expected for them.

If those commonwealth countries want to stay in the commonwealth, let them

What about if we give them all a vote using ballot boxes watched over by U.K. officials only and with only one box to tick and that's to join the UK and obviously we will need armed guards everywhere to make sure it's legit and safe etc how about we call them little green men or pro U.K .armed groups (that we obviously don't endorse , wink wink )

We must attack them to defend them first.

They’ll be training us in the coming years in much of the equipment and tactics they’re using.

Quite likely.

Although that's pretty much always the case, any sensible military/arms manufacturer looks at how their tactics and equipment work in the current real world, how the people using it have varied from the original idea of it's use, then feed that back to improve training and equipment for the future so in the next fight the users are hopefully not having to learn the same lessons in blood, and the equipment works better straight out of the box with hardware issues identified and fixed or updated to reflect changes since the original design.

Meanwhile Russia seems to be having issues remembering why human waves aren't a great thing against almost any reasonably well supplied and trained military since the average trooper got something that could fire repeatedly with a degree of accuracy.

I think what is required to end this war is for the US and Russia to sit down and have very serious formal discussions about a whole host of things, such as NATO expansion, nuclear weapons, how both of them act covertly against each others interests, and look towards building a peaceful future where both countries co-exist and benefit each other mutually rather than acting as adversaries.

How will that persuade Russia to leave Ukraine, which isn't even a NATO member?

Does anyone in either Russia or the US want this conflict?

Yes, Putin does and public opinion is overwhelmingly on his side.

Could money spent on massive arsenals of nuclear weapons be better spent elsewhere? I imagine so. The collapse of the USSR was a great opportunity to end the Cold War, both sides seem to have squandered that.

The Cold War ended decades ago. We won, and the Russians have never forgiven us for humiliating them. That's why Putin is so popular.

Yes it is. It's deeply divided on this issue, hence the civil discontent over the issue over the past 20 years.

I don't know if I have enough words to explain to you just how patently false this is. I might even need to invent some new adjectives.

Depends. If Mexico were to become a satellite state of China? What would the USA do?

Nothing, that's Mexico's choice.

Is it? You think the USA would allow China to be sat on its borders?

I'm not sure that would be Mexico's choice at all.

Why not? Cuba was a Soviet satellite state for decades, during which the US made one failed attempt to overthrow Castro (Bay of Pigs Invasion) and then gave up. Even the Cuban Missile Crisis wasn't enough to cause a war.

I have to wonder how many people commenting in this thread were even alive during the Cold War. Not many, judging by some of the replies.

I'm not sure that would be Mexico's choice at all.

If it was Mexico's choice, I believe the US would do nothing beyond imposing sanctions. If it was not Mexico's choice and Mexico requested aid, I believe the US would assist.

I'm not sure how Mexico becoming a "satellite state" of China (and what that term specifically means) has any relation to Ukraine joining the EU?

Under whose 'control' woukd Ukraine supposedly be under?

Its just more whataboutism by people who have little grasp of global politics who spend too much time sucking in wongthink
