Remember that he started by trying to form an anti-Hitler pact with the Allies, then made a pact with Hitler that encouraged him to attack Poland, then backflipped after growing concerned by Hitler's success across Western Europe.
Stalin actually trusted Hitler to be true to the Molotov/ Ribbentrop pact. Stalin refused to listen to intelligence reports from both the allies and his own side that Germany was gearing up to invade Russia. Stalin’s bad luck was that he lived at the same time as Hitler, another complete fruitloop.
A good book to read that will help understand Russian mentality is Russia by Anthony Beevor which focuses on the Russian Revolution. The leaders and their descendants were (and are) seriously damaged individuals
