RTX 4070 12GB, is it Worth it?

I'd buy one for the higher minimum framerate personally (if money was no object).

You don't need a 4090 for ray tracing.

What's even more silly is that the AIBs are charging £1,700 for this card, or more.

The RTX 4090 TI FE is gonna be priced at £2,000 for sure. So, at least £400 in VAT :cry:

For comparison, the RTX 3090 TI FE was apparently priced at £1879.

So, £2,000 seems just as ridiculous for an RTX 4090 TI, whenever that releases.

Rockpapershotgun also claimed that £1049 for the RTX 3080 TI was not an "extortionate" price.

3090Ti was always a bad card, insane power usage for minimal performance upgrade.

Be interesting to see what they do with a 4090Ti. Personally would still like to see them just go crazy and call it a Titan and give it tons of vram. Not too interested in how much it will cost because I will wait for the 50 series which will be faster at the high end and more power efficient to boot.

Part of me just wants to see a revival of the Titan moniker. I remember when the Titan X came out with 12GB and it blew my mind.

Meanwhile, the 2nd hand prices for cards like the RTX 4070 TI and RX 7900 XT on auction sites is the same as buying new :cry:

You'd have to be quite special to buy these cards 2nd hand at that price, the scalping continues.

I don’t understand people sometimes. Buying cards like that without warranty…

At the height of the pandemic MAYBE if you had no other choice but GPU’s are in stock everywhere filling the shelves.

Why do yourself out of a warranty?!

I’m mainly excited for the reviews because I’m hoping for some entertaining rants. New GPU releases are always fun anyway.

I think it would be relatively easy for AMD to release a card that easily beats the RTX 4070, for around $600.

It would have to be a Navi31 GPU, because Navi32 is limited to 60 Compute Units. It would make logical sense to have something in between a Navi32 GPU with 60 CUs, and the RX 7900 XT (Navi31) with 86 CUs.

Perhaps with 72 CUs, the same number as the RX 6800 XT.

You'd think AMD would be interested in competing with the xx70 tier of card this time around, as these usually sell the best...

Titans used to have their own drivers that were a bit more optimised for pro use so a 48GB would be nice.

24GB is SOOO 2020. I want to see ludicrous specs. Eye watering specs.

PCMR and all that.

The unreal engine 5 developer that was on the recent MLID episode said GPUs will need as much as 32gb to max out future unreal engine 5 games at 4k

You'll want a new GPU by the time 32GB of VRAM (or 24GB) becomes relevant to games...

They're the easiest part in your PC to upgrade, except for DDR4/5.

It's actually not the end of the world if your PC has to fall back on system RAM sometimes.

The 7900 XT seems to be AMD's most competitive card, imo:

It's surprising to see it a bit ahead in a few ray traced games (native 4K).

I actually think the 20GB may've been a bit overkill... 16GB should be fine.

Yeah, he also said "we don't have time for optimization so games wonn't run on 8gb". Which makes sense considering the best looking game this gen plays great at 4k ultra with 5gb of VRAM while the atrociously bad looking forspoken and godfall needs twice - three times as much. At this point I feel like you are supposed to pay for more vram not to have better visuals - since youll have worse actually - but to save devs time optimizing.

It is for mainstream systems. Not only is the price of entry of PCI-E 5.0 way too high, lots of mainstream dGPU lack VRAM, memory bandwidth and increasingly have cut down PCI-E bus width. An extreme example is the RX6500XT, but even the RX6600XT can be affected. The RTX4060TI 8GB is a PCI-E 8X card apparently. It could become a big problem in a few years if mainstream dGPUs get smaller and smaller PCI-E bus sizes, ie, the RTX6060 being PCI-E 8X too. This is compounded by mainstream systems usually having less system RAM and it is usually clocked lower than enthusiast systems.
