What is a good salary in UK at present?

Love how you pick out some places in the UK that, let's be honest, if you were trying to think of places that aren't so great (Birmingham, I'm looking at you for example) but for Switzerland, it's all about knowing the right people?! I don't think you've structured your argument too well...

Since I became a cyclist 4 years ago, my view of the UK has changed. We have such beautiful countryside with some fantastic little villages that you just don't see much of if you live in/only visit big cities.

As a cyclist you probably wear lycra, cycle 3 abreast and shave your legs so your opinion is not valid I'm afraid.

Switzerland even for the people that don't know the right people is still beautiful and safe. Maybe it's not violent enough which it's why it's claimed as boring....

Saying Switzerland is very tolerant toward everyone is some major cope. I’ve worked there numerous times travelling with a multicultured group and the Indian guy with us had a hellish time with the looks and abuse he was getting.

Does depend on circumstances. My wife earns 49, and I earn 39 but we have 2 kids (so expensive), but live in a reasonable priced small 5 bed detached in a nice area (bit up north so cheap, i class east riding as north ). We are far better off than just one working earning 88k. My wife is actually looking to try and drop hours slightly as she's getting close to the next tax bracket, I know it's only increased tax above the threshold, but I'm sure something else starts reducing. It's not that clear cut though as she's NHS and the way the pension works it might be worse long term (I was thinking she should drop her hours to the next bracket of pension, but not sure how much difference it will make).

To be fair with his comments on the UK it makes it even stranger that he was so desperate to make it to the UK via a backdoor (Ireland) when the travel ban was in place during COVID lockdown so he didn't have to isolate for 2 weeks.

This is absolutely the trick imo....... in a partnership and if you want to spend more time with your kids rather than rely on holiday clubs and after school clubs(we have to do that anyway unfotunately) but it is far better to both cut your hrs if possible and both take some of the slack rather than having a primary earner and the other person earning next to nowt.


Another thing i have done which i would never have done without having a kid, but was one of the best work life balance things i have ever done........... I work 4 long days and have 1 day off. I am still 90% of full time, sure it costs me around £300 a month in lost earnings.......... but to get an extra day off a week to get a good chunk of the chores done at home, which then frees up the weekend to do family stuff is a game changer imo.

Not all jobs can accommodate this and i didn't think i was gonna swing it at 1st....... but when i asked and got the ...... oooo i dont know if that is appropriate.... I observed that almost all the women doing the same job as me had been allowed to cut their hrs once having kids and was curious (because i was sure they wouldn't discriminate about me being a bloke) as to why i was different.

I did this 7 years ago and never looked back.

From working out how much literally everything has increased by since I started working in 2009, the uk median salary should be at least £43k by now.

Everything has gone up by at least 70% (houses, cars, food, energy, petrol etc etc) , so taking the average median of £25k in 2009, I would say at least £43k.

Unfortunately we have all been royally **** in the ass by greedy rich people and years of Tory rule.

From personal experience of working in a corporate environment, employees generally need to change jobs to keep pace with the rolling target of a good salary.

For example, new employees recruited externally can come in at current market rates for the job while existing employees who have been doing the same job for a number of years have slipped behind in salary compared to market rates and can be a good few £K behind new recruits. I have seen it happen a number of times, newbies coming in on higher salaries and getting a company car chucked in as part of the sweetener while existing employees lag behind and no car.

Woah don't let my Mrs hear you say that, she a pharmacist so not only does she have to deal with a lot of stuff, she isn't striking (unlike those overpaid consultants ). Think she only got a 2% rise this year, and nothing last year.

This is what I mentioned earlier. We are richer through career progression not proper wage increases.

The missus and I were on 80k combined adjusted for inflation back in 2008. She was a machine operative and I was a team leader in a factory at 21 years old. Simple working class jobs 9-5. That was a 45-48 hour week as well. Weekends off, time and quarter after 35 hours and time and half after 48, up to 13 weeks full sick pay depending on time served, final salary pension (What a noob I was not to start paying into that).

All that stuff basically doesn't exist now at the company I started working at. Just a flat miserable rate and they do not even pay for breaks so some people are basically working below minimum wage but it is legal.

You cannot blame that all on government as it is just pure greed.

To be at the same level as were then you need to be an area manager in charge of 50+ people, be HR, be Payroll because the whole lot has been streamlined with computers so not only are you doing your original job of ten years ago but you are also doing the job of two others!
