I see this has gone down as well as expected with the Ukranians. Unfortunately I can see this being the price...

Personally think there will be more pressure over the coming months for a "quick and easy" fix to end the conflict due to it being an "inconvenience" to the more general population, despite the longer term repercussions of that, even if the remains of Ukraine was in NATO, has significant potential to be more costly and inconvenient.

Playing exactly into Putin's end game

"Quick n easy" that results in another attack later on, because "NATO are still a threat" etc.

All the Russian regime will take away from it is that if they make things inconvenient enough the West will eventually compromise. Maybe the chances are later down the road things might go a different direction but amongst other factors time isn't on Putin's side at his age (so he'd likely try and leverage that sooner rather than later).

Interesting video from CNN showing Ukraine is able to use Thermal imaging camera's on drones to locate landmines

So it turns out land mines work like storage heaters in as much as when it's hot and sunny they absorb the heat from the surrounding earth and in the evening when it's colder the landmines retain the heat as the earth around them cools down allowing them to be detected by thermal imaging.

Should be equipping front line troops and vehicles with the imagers and let them try to push through the Russian line at night and see the mines to avoid them

This looks bad, and is bad.

Nato should be standing firm- and officially disown this statement as it is damaging.

They have.

Tbh, if the 'update' and retraction is to be believed, it sounds like the headline didn't quite reflect the context he was talking about, which wouldn't be a complete surprise.

For eg. If this war grinds on with a stalemate for 3,5,10 years - there's a point that a resolution will be made. To postulate about it doesn't mean we're ready to admit defeat now. Hell Germany just pledged financial support until 2027, so it sounds like we're not expecting a quick win but are ready to support them for some time yet.

Ah, sorry been out and about most of the day, so hadn't seen more recent stuff on this.

The old idea of surviving a direct shot from an opposing tank to the front seems obsolete.

Tanks have always been about combined arms. It used to be tanks + infantry; now they need to add anti-air into the mix. And AA guns are rather lethal when fired horizontally, as the Japanese found in WW2.
