Does something need to be done about dogs?

About time.
The worry will be the existing ones and a surge in ownerships prior to any ban coming into force.

Mandatory insurance, muzzling, leashing and neutering. Maybe something similar for the dogs too ;)

XL Bullies have an insane power to weight ratio, with a low centre of mavity and a predisposition to violence. All of this has been bred into them over many generations, for the sole purpose of creating a ruthless fighting machine that serves no useful or ethical purpose in modern society.

They're a dead end breed. They should be sterilised, and allowed to die out.

I just hope this don’t turn into a witch hunt where campaigners start campaigning for every breed involved in an attack to be banned. For example, we’ve already got quite a lot on here who think staffies should be banned.

How far will it go?

It's amazing how social media amplifies things.

You'd think (from the feed and stuff I see) that everyone loves xls. When really, its probably mostly people with links to that breesd

Looks like a sensible approach is being taken. Ban but no cull. Should keep everyone happy(ish)

I don't think there will be anywhere near as much traction with Staffs. The dogs themselves aren't really anymore dangerous than many dogs of a similar size, they're just more likely to be owned by a muppet. And you can't cull muppets.

Looking at expected law change we’ll only have to put up with these things for a decade or so. I can’t wait for the crossbreed debate and legal challenges to allow new versions of Pit Bulls to rampage once more.

My mate has had a Bully XL for about 7 years, he's really worried what's going to happen.
Had it as a puppy and its played, with their 7 year old kid all its life, they are best buddies, even has a nap with it.They don't leave them alone before the, oh they are bad parents crew chime in, they didn't leave the now older kid with their previous dog which was a Spaniel
While they aren't my cup of tea of a dog to have it's a lovely dog and a big softy.
Shows what a bit of training and how they are bought up can do.
Unless they bring in certain things, training, licences etc then you may as well ban these breeds and other types as the merry go round will just continue and some other poor breed will be in the spotlight next year.

I don't think they are going to destroy dogs that haven't been a problem. Likely will have to have him neutered and will have to wear a muzzle when out in public and always be on a lead. The breed will naturally disappear in a generation.

Its not just nurture, if people breed with a violent dog because it looks great and they know the puppies will sell there is good chance some of those puppies might have a similar temperament. There is already a huge problem with inbreeding in many breeds and if the gene pool is small in one its going to be even worse. Nature also plays a big part in animal behaviour.

I'm surprised there isn't a cull, dog attacks will still happen because ultimately the issue is with bad owners and unfortunately, you cannot cull the owners

I wouldn’t want to be an officer involved in entering someone’s house and forcibly removing one of these. I honestly think if there was a cull that someone would end up dead trying to defend their dog or attacking someone trying to take it.

There would certainly be police assaults and tasers involved, at the very least, when you consider the owners of some of these dogs.

If someone came to take my dog, with he himself having done nothing wrong, I don't really know how I would react, other than knowing I would not react pleasantly.

Heck, some of them are going to kick up a stink over just having to have their dog neutered, even if it is better for the dogs health long term as it reduces the risks of things like cancers.

That's easy. Treat it like a weapon and send armed police. If the dog is aggressive, it gets shot. That's how they handle it in the US

Dogs with genetic deformities should be banned, too. Like Pugs. Poor buggers can't breathe.

But that's another topic :p

The problem with that is if the owner kicks up a fuss it's going to wind the dog up, and even a gentle dog can react to protect it's owner under what it sees as an actual threat, doubly so if it's a "protection dog". So the owner is going to get their dog shot, basically.

It would be a mess no matter what anyone enforcing it tries to do.
