EV general discussion

Really oddly, our firm drops to 0p/mile for EVs.
If its a company car them they are only obliged to compensate at 9p per mile, if it's a private car driving for work then its 45p per mile.
If they disagree then report them to HMRC.

"Electric
From 1 December 2023 the advisory electric rate for fully electric cars will be 9 pence per mile
."

May need a bike rack in the future for the EV.

Any real world experience about which is best (roof mounted vs rear mounted) for efficiency and range?

A second problem is that my I Pace doesn't have a tow bar which might limit my options somewhat :(

I would say that gives a good enough charge in an hour if you're at gym or supermarket etc. 1 or 2 of those per week is all that most people would need. But yeah better to charge at home on drive of course.
I think you're overestimating just how many charging points will actually offer 22kW (or even 11kW) charging. For the most part you'll get 7kW or step up to DC charging at 50kW+.

Wrong, they are not obliged to compensate at all.

The advisory rates are the maximum they can compensate before there are tax implications.

Of course most employees will tell their employer to do one if they are expected to pay for their own business mileage, so any decent employer will just stick to the advisory rates anyway.

Just checked - 9p for a company EV, but I don't think that includes my SS EV. Interestingly, it is 20p a mile for a bicycle. So best to bill an EV as a bicycle as you won't need a receipt then :D

I’d have thought rear mounted for best efficiency but you’ll likely have more options with roof mounted.

Rear mounted can be problematic at public chargers depending on their layout/charge port location (iPace is front in isn’t it so probably fine?). You may get scuppered by unexpected height restrictions on a roof mount.

In short, I don’t think there is any ‘correct’ answers. I’ve seen lots of people go for those suction cup based ones in Tesla land which should be compatible with any car.

You're right on the not compensate at all. But then the employer refuses to use their personal car.
Company car wise, if they pay FF drivers then wouldn't that be discriminatory?

Either way unless the wage is great then look for a decent employer.

My company is the same for a company EV - and but they pay 11p per mile for the SS EV because "I have a car allowance".

(a) Own vehicle used
HMRC mileage rates https://www.gov.uk/government/publi.../travel-mileage-and-fuel-rates-and-allowances

(b) Receives a car allowance
xxxx uses the Advisory Fuel rates as specified by HMRC plus 2 pence. The latest rates may be found at: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cars/advisory_fuel_current.htm
Miles claimed using electric cars will be reimbursed at HMRC advisory rates for electric cars plus 2 pence.
The latest rates can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/advisory-fuel-rates/advisory-fuel-rates-from-1-march-2016

(c) Company car used
HMRC Fuel Advisory Rate These rates are payable to staff with a company car but are not in receipt of car allowance or a fuel card. xxxx uses the Advisory Fuel rates as specified by HMRC. The latest rates may be found at: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cars/advisory_fuel_current.htm

So, given this, and given that my car allowance is taxed at my marginal rate, is there some kind of tax rebate for work mileage that will bridge the gap between own vehicle rates and car allowance rates? Or does the fact that the lease is done by my employer make it a company vehicle?

Hi
Another ipace owner here too.
if you find an affordable rear mounted one (ideally for 3 bikes but i could maybe make 2 work) please post here &/or PM me.

i put our 8 year olds bike in the boot, not only was it a hell of a squeeze and i scuffed my car inside, there is zero chance i could get a bike for my wife or myself in there as well.

I'll be putting our bikes (2 adult, 2 kids) on the roof of the IPace. Mine is pano so have to get these hook feet things for the Thule bars.

The rear rack would be nice but it's about £800 from JLR or £3/400 2nd hand if you can find one.

Whats the general thoughts on the Enyaq? im potentially looking at the 85x sportline plus with HP. The Model Y LR has shot up in price, so if i want practical EV its looking like the Enyaq or even Ariya, top spec on either one of these stand me at ~140 a month all in inc CC tax. ID4 GTX and even the model Y are pretty much double the price.

Mercs seem to be very well priced, shame about the range.

I'd take an Enyaq at 140 a month!

It's MEB based so all the foibles of the platform (infotainment mainly, and cost cutting) and they are solid cars but won't excite you.

edit: most reviews say it's better than the ID4 so if it's half the price bit of a no brainer really
