Rules of engagement bases on upper classes fighting upper classes and a gentleman's agreement. Its nonsense look at how the Taliban won, by taking the war rulebook and burning it.

War is a gentlemen's game like cricket, meant for the upper classes of society. Then those upper classes decided they woyld rather sent waves of peasants to fight for them - welcome to modern warfare 101

Modern warfare? It's been like that since.. well.. at least since 1066.. If it's not the economic upperclass it's the religious upperclass..

Thats nonsense the Taliban isn't a field army by any metric. its the Viet Cong to the NVA its not remotely similar.

you could say its a christian morality western ideal of warfare after watching most of european suffering twice. ...

What has that got to do with it ? It's a war our western morals mean nothing to them nothing. Maybe the humanity of the person themselves may win out but as a collective it's nothing. The Russians are using it as a weapon where we take the moral highroad.

We are arguing the same thing. Ill leave it there.

at the end of the day the acts of the individual will dictate the events on the battlefield and the victory is all that matters.. (and that is inhumane and ****** up)

Yes exactly the Russians will do pretty much everything that will not turn the majority of the world against them.

Its a difficult balance to strike. War will never be pretty and never fully sanitised.
If you try to play by those rules someone else will just use that against you.

As we have seen, right now for Russia there is an advantage in trying to drag Ukraine down with them.
A fully sanitised Western type war reduces Russias zerg style approach.

To a degree it's funny how individuals turn the collective when your in the thick of it though. Boils down to training and discipline and in general the west wins out.

If you take prisoners out of jail and say fight for us for six months and then you are free, with no training there will not be much order.

At least Ukrainian conscripts are getting trained in the west and probably imbued with some discipline in the process. Then it is up to the officers how each unit fights.

However if it is your back to the wall and your streets and your people being invaded it must be much harder to restrain some actions

Apart from the guy @4:05 the rest of are the typical brainwashed zombies and surfs types. Sooner or latter their crappy little world is going to come crashing down around them and they won't know the real reason why. Dear leader will either be arrested or turn up dead so good luck filming one of those pathetic videos begging Putin for for help because the local supermarket has run out of food.

What?

This is war. They are all getting slowly shredded to death, all the ******* time. What do you think an artillery strike or bombing raid does?

You think everyone in a war gets killed instantly by a nice clean shot to the head? Is that the only "moral" way to kill someone when fighting?

If someone is lying injured and unable to fight, you don't kill them at all.

Artillery and bombing is obviously fair game, some injured soldiers will be caught in that also, but deliberately targeting a downed enemy is not right and the Geneva convention agrees with me, I'll take that over the opinions of the more tribal and bloodthirsty portion of this forum.

"Russia will win eventually. Things will get back to how they were in the old days. We've always been friendly with Ukraine".

That is utter delusion. Even if Russia does "win" (and that is more of a possibility than many on here want to believe) then Ukraine will move to guerilla tactics for generations to come. There will be so much hate from the Ukranians that there will never be peace. Peace can only come if Russia leaves.

Yes, but I think it's ridiculous to say there is morality in war.

People are trying to kill each other and they are going to do that any way they can. They aren't going to risk their own life if they can help it.

I am not sure about this grenade thing you are talking about, but lets suppose a situation - you have what you think is an injured Russian soldier (who you hate for killing your friends) and you have a drone above him. Do you drop a grenade on him, or do you risk your own life by running over to him and asking him if he wants to surrender? I know what I would do.

War only has any morality at command level. Down in the trenches, it's barbaric.

Option C, do nothing. If the only way to get to him is via a drone then you obviously aren't in control of that area fully, so other than organising a truce (unlikely in this situation obviously) then it's just up to the Russians to attempt a rescue really.

It's a mercy in comparison to what the Russians are likely to do them either by running them over with a vehicle, bombing them with their own weapons or if they're really lucky get a chance to have all their limbs chopped off because the Russians especially early on in the war have minimal concept of medivac or the last century of battlefield medicine.

If you are still alive and not surrendering, you can still fight.

Also, the fact that you think artillery and bombing is fair game , even though it would definitely result in the same thing happening is laughable.

Well in both world war 1 and 2, a higher proportion of upper classes were killed as they occupied more officer positions where they were priority targets.

Pure propaganda talk. Or there wouldn't be so many videos of drones dropping on medivacs and combat medics and stretchers.

You're an intelligent guy dont be too silly.

No thats not pro russian its just honest. They most certainly are probably not taking as much care over "penal" units.

Anyway posting bravado BS on here doesn't stop anything so its fine.

Thats was way overly harsh sorry, but i dont believe its as harsh as we want it to be for propagandas sake.

But its certainly good its not upto western standards.

Western standards like special forces massacring whole families? Perhaps we ought to ignore My Lai just in case it hurts some sense of purity.

No it does not, hence why finishing off wounded enemies is not a war crime.

If they are in a van with a red cross on the side headed off the battlefield that's different, if they are waving a white flag or screaming their surrender that is different, but killing an active enemy combatant even though they are injured is perfectly acceptable in every countries rules of engagement and always has been.

Have some people here never seen a war film or heard any war stories? History is littered with instances of soldiers who are wounded (sometimes mortally) continuing to fight and even achieving battle turning results. That's why if they're not surrendering/or being medevac'd you keep shooting until they stop moving.

This is actually a pretty good point.

If I was lying in a muddy ditch bleeding to death and knew my future only consisted of long drawn out extreme pain that had a minute chance of ending in being retrieved and subjected to Victorian levels of battlefield surgery which I would most likely not survive anyway I would want the whole ordeal to be over ASAP.
