Dragon Age: The Veilguard

From what I saw it was the left over live service elements that were one of the not good features of the game, such as loot upgrades. Seems EA always learn the wrong lessons.

I'd have to be paid to play it
I played a good few hours of it for effectively free, by nature of having briefly had that EA play sub, I legitimately wish I could get the time back. Too many people were running around yelling at others for calling a bag of poo out for what it was because they "hadn't played it" -- as though there wasn't more than enough data for people to decide without wasting money.

I came to the conclusion that if you'd never played a Dragon Age game and were entirely new to the franchise, it was a generic and poorly written waste of many hours or your life. If you are a fan of the older games it's utter garbage and EA should be paying you, which they apparently did given the press scores and statements.

I've not played it, but as a HUGE fan of DA:O, with some love (a lot, but it took time to recognise) for DA:2 and finally, the acceptance of the new direction but still a great game in it's own right, DA:I.

Taking those three titles and placing them along side this mess just highlights the absolute joke the game is. EA can **** off and do one.

DA2 has many flaws, but it also has some of the best characters in the franchise imo. Varrick at his best as a prime example, he's a husk in DA:V. A character and story driven RPG can be forgiven if other aspects are a touch janky, but not when the core elements of the series are garbage.

Comment from Bioware Veteran David Gaider on Veilgard, and EA learning the wrong lessons from its failure:
"If I really dig into my empathy, I can kinda see the thinking here. Like, let's say you don't actually know much about games. You're in a big office with a bunch of other execs who also don't know much about games. What are they all saying? 'Live games do big numbers!' 'Action games are hot!'"

"My advice to EA (not that they care): you have an IP that a lot of people love. Deeply. At its height, it sold well enough to make you happy, right? Look at what it did best at the point where it sold the most. Follow Larian's lead and double down on that. The audience is still there. And waiting.

I'm gonna grab it when it gets down to the £20 mark tbh

At this stage even if you like the game, buying it only rewards EA CEO and investors. The people who made the game have all been fired; they don't benefit or get paid when you buy the game anymore

He worked on their magnum opus Baldurs Gate 2 among other writers and is responsible for the accession mod, which I also consider a must have if your playing the Throne of Bhaal. So I have a lot of respect for David but I kind of think like he is also one of the reasons that future Bioware games veered ever more so in the direction they did. It was only a question of time on a release going too over the edge, too direct on minority politicised views over the majority, and too over the top like it was, and so it was made and it bombed hard.

Problem is with a lot of these companies...

They create products on the basis of what they think you want, rather than what the consumer actually wants

Never a truer word said.
They also listen to the 1% of gamers who clearly want to force their agenda on the 99% rest of us.
Thankfully DEI and woke is dying out rather rapidly.

Game was that bad EA have started clearing house. Quite a few blue haired staff have been sacked and probably the entire writing team.

Games was that bad they only had 1.5million engagements.

Interesting terminology tbh.

That could include refunded copies, people running the demo, people on EA Play etc.

Makes me really interested in what the actual sales numbers are as of right now.

I bought the game upon release and ended up refunding it just shy of 2 hours into the game.

I've been a fan of the Dragon Age series since Origin first launched, but every iteration since (out with Origins expansions) the games kept getting dumbed down and the dark fantasy setting became brighter.

They forgot what made people love the series and tried to appeal to as many people as possible rather than targeting the audience which made the series popular in the first place.

At least I still have Origins!

DA: Origins and Awakening were definitely peak.

DA2 I found repetitive, you basically run around the same small handful of areas and maps for the entire game, that said I really liked some of the characters such as Varrick and Isabela.

DAI felt like an empty MMO to me, I didn't get on with it for the most part but again it did have some decent characters and the overall narrative.

It's almost like a character driven RPG series needs well written characters, who woulda thought.

Absolutely spot on with the analysis of the previous games and I have the exact same thoughts on them. Although DA:2 I absolutely hated with a passion at the time, coming from playing Origins the tone was ok, but the dumbed down action and enemies that just spawn on top of you was just stupid.

Honestly, I think a lot of it isn’t companies giving customers what they think they want. It is giving customers what they think they should want.
