Asus ROG PG32UCDM - 4k OLED 240hz

So I landed an order for one of these which I was pretty happy with, was a nice deal. But the more I read about cleaning QD OLEDs and how easily they apparently seem to scratch up, I am getting worried having to deal with that. Read about people doing everything as they are supposed to, microfiber cloth dampened with distilled water, and somehow still manage to cause microscratches on the panel. And they're apparently just that much more vulnerable than the regular OLED I am used to from my TV?

I think you want to go with the sort of flatter ‘glasses cleaning’ cloth without ‘knobbles’, rather than the micro fibre cloths that are typically available from supermarkets and are used for generic cleaning.

As long as you take some care, which it sounds like you will do, then just forget about trying to keen it perfect - nobody is able to do this.

LOL think yourself lucky as I also have a 65 inch QD Oled to keep clean

This reminds me it needs cleaning again :(

Cleaned my other 65” W-OLED yesterday only to watch my dog put all it paw prints all over it again about an hour later after he saw a hamster on the TV

Interested in this monitor. Pretty sure I’d need to bin off the two 27 inch monitors and just go back down to one though.

hdr on my current asus oled leaves a nasty temporary burn in if I use it a lot, it is a pain to clear out with the pixel refresh. Wonder if that problem is solved now.

I see there a new version of the Asus display widget i updated to this morning

Anyone know what changes or fixes were made ?

Just managed to get a used pg32ucdm for £660 on eBay. Had the pg27ucdm ordered for £1100 but thinking this was too good of a deal to pass up?

It’s a bit of a risk - all the issues of buying used from a distance - but if it’s faultless, it could be a bargain.

You won’t be getting the full bandwidth 2.1 port though that supports 80gb/s (which is marked on specs with ‘DP80’). That’s only on the PG27UCDM. This means you will be using DSC for 240hz. For most people this is fine, but it can cause quirks / flickering and tbh I’m pretty sure this is part of the reason why people are currently having screen issues with 50 series cards (miscommunications between windows / monitors / the new 2.1 display port on the GPU).

On this topic, see my post here for what I encountered and then my posts in this thread.

Many thanks. I received the monitor yesterday (think you saw the state it arrived), thankfully the monitor seems OK, but testing it thoroughly.

Will be sure to read your posts, very helpful thank you

Ah! Yeah… I guess it’s a bit harder to have a go re: condition of the box if it’s just a random non-business seller! Glad that it seems to be OK.

Hi kind folks

Just finished building my new PC and decided to upgrade my monitor to the PG32UCDM. Please treat me gently, but I have some potentially dumbass questions (it arrives from OCUK tomorrow Sunday):

1. Im moving from an Acer Predator IPS panel 16:9 27" 1440p. This IPS still looks amazing to me today 6 years on. This is my first OLED. Am I going to see a material difference?
2. This is my first 4k monitor also. The new PC is somewhat predictably a 9800X3D and a 4080Super (the rest of the kit inside is good quality). Im coming from a GTX 1080 and an Intel 4770K - but I am still worried my new rig wont be able to cope with gaming at 4k. Terrible error?
3. Lastly feeling very stupid about this one. The new monitor supports DP1.4 or HDMI 2.1 and neither of these is capable of driving 4k at 240hz - so what am i missing? How can Asus make and sell a monitor whos inputs cannot support the refresh rate the monitor supports. I almost cancelled the order when I sat and thought this through just now. Its my understanding that on 50series GPUs have DP 2.1 and what use is that if they a) catch fire and b) the inputs on the monitor side are still DP1.4? Im vexing myself here I fear.

Thanks!

How you getting on with it now it been about a week

Have you found any bad points that stand out ?
I really can't think of any bad points so far. Class monitor.

1. 100% you will see a material difference, once you see it you won't be able to go back to IPS.

2. Ideally you would want a 5090 for 4k gaming, but a 4080 super is no slouch either. You won't be able to get 4k 240 in everything but you should be reaching playable fps in most titles, and 240fps in competitive titles.

3. Display stream compression (dsc) is used to achieve 4k 240. It is best to use hdmi 2.1 as it has higher bandwidth than dp 1.4. Only display port 2.1a can do 4k 240 without dsc, if you definitely want that the only option right now for 32 inch is the fo32u2p. The whole point of dsc is that it's visually lossless meaning that a survey was done and people can't distinguish the difference.

Asus PG32UCDM looks to be very similar to the Gigabyte AORUS fo32u2p.

The Asus is more expensive and has DP1.4 instead of 2.1. Why get the Asus over Gigabyte? Is DP2.1 backward compatible with DP1.4?

Yeah, DP 2.1 is backwards compatible with 1.4.

It's the same panel and the features are almost identical between the two. It just comes down to price / preference!
