Obsidian New RPG Avowed

He looks familiar. I think someone posted a long arse video of him crying as he lined up for days and still couldn't get a 5090. Lol.

The Nvidia version of that one Star Wars guy?

Edit: Is anyone in the second area yet, aka the place you go to after finding a certain archer enemy? I'm on the fence about playing further, I've been told it's more of the same but worse -- aka blander characters and environments and enemies which aren't much different. I don't dislike the game so much as I find it shallow and disappointing, but the gameplay given it's relatively short could inspire me to keep going if I focus on the main quest. I just need something new rather than generic, the lizards/bears/bandits etc are getting old and the AI isn't the greatest for them. Not that I'm expecting better for new enemy types, but at least they (should) act differently and I can push through.

I played some of this over the weekend and its not one I'll be continuing with. Its really not as bad as some people have made out (especially the exploration side of things which is really good) , but for me at least..I put this on a par with Starfield, by that I dont mean its as bad as Starfield was in terms of certain design choices, what I mean is that like Starfield it could (and one could argue should) have been so much more than it is. For me, its just too lacking in the things I require in this sort of game, perhaps one day they will release a "Directors Cut" edition or a remaster and I will revisit it but for now with all the other (better imo) games I have to play, its just not a game for me to invest time in.

You know, it felt exactly like Starfield to me as well. Just big spaces that feel empty and characterless...just running around ticking boxes and getting gear with higher numbers.

It's not a bad game, but not sure I can put the effort in to complete it.

I think its really good so far. I am just about to start the 2nd large map.

I blew a hole in a wall then looted the area. Then an NPC started shouting at me for damaging walls and he screamed 'You could have just walked round'

Sure enough, there was another entrance without blowing the wall :D

Just checked and time played 24.4 hrs.

Played a fair bit over the weekend, it's 'okay', I feel the same way I did playing Outer Worlds, that was okay too. I won't remember a jot about it in a few months. Having been gaming all these years I think it takes something special to get me truly immersed, and that sure as hell isn't this lol.

I'm right at the end with about 50 hours of play time. Combat clicked with me and I just had a ton of fun respec-ing throughout and trying all the new weapons and spells. It was apparent to me early on that it'd do the "choices matter" thing so I just barrelled down the "go with the God" path. There's enough variation in story beats for another playthrough later on.

started this, just a few hours in and enjoying it a lot. feels a lot like skyrim to me. its very pretty too, i love the art style and the fantasy characters are nicely unique and not just your D&D tropes endlessly reused. Loads of dialogue options which helps with the rpg immersion. I can see myself losing a lot of time to this game.

Yeh im feeling more that way too.

It is more the 'feel' of it to me. i think ultimately i'm no longer a fan of Bethesda/Obsidian style stuff. It's all just a bit too twee and seems geared towards being suitable for a wide range of audiences. I think that sort of thing can be done effectively, as many pixar/dreamworks animations pull it off. However, i don't think their studios have the creative and writing talent to pull it off.

Probably just showing my age I guess :p

i think more showing a lack of progress in the industy. how is it that when someone quotes the best rpg's they quote games that are 14 years old. how is skyrim still one of the best? especially when you replay it now you can really feel it's age, and nothing new beats it. it's crazy. it's like the industry had this huge jump from 2d to 3d games, then 3d games with decent content/animations, and then just stopped progressing.

Yes i think you are right. Most games i play these days do feel like a step backwards compared to what has come before.

They all seem so "safe" and uninteresting. I feel like even graphics are somehow getting worse in a lot of games. Maybe not from a purely technical standpoint, but there seems to be something missing.

The Witcher 3 came out in 2015, so going on a decade old. I wouldn't say something like Avowed or DA:V are a notable improvement visually speaking, and from the perspective of the art direction are considerably worse imo.

I swear when I see a game with a unicorn vomit colour palette and cartoonish art direction I pretty much know it's not going to be for me, it's seemingly a strong indication of other elements.

I think they try to make the games too inclusive now and by that I don't mean "woke" or any of that crap I mean they try to appeal to too large of a group of people to try and maximise sales rather than go all out and appeal solely to the group interested in that genre of game and with this comes a severe lack of quality as what would be the depth gets spread too thinly trying to appeal to too many different types of people.

With that said, I am enjoying Avowed for what it is, it's nothing spectacular but it's not a bad game.

maybe the issue is none of us are 13 years old. has anyone got a 13 year old spare that they could ask their thoughts? because it's likely they enjoy this much more than we do. sometimes you only have to look at the colour palette to see which age group the game is designed for.

Mine’s too busy playing Aftermath on Roblox with his mates to care.
