EV general discussion

see.... who needs a manual we we have resident expert on hand.

thanks for the info!.

Just to add things how my Polestar does it - all braking is on regen unless it exceeds a certain need (or is the first application of the day, you’re in reverse or the battery is too cold/full)

It shows you what it’s doing on the power/charge gauge and differentiates by colour as to whether it’s regen or physical brakes, and must go through the first one to get to the other.

It’s why at my 36k service they measured my brakes to be 10% worn, and will probably outlast the car…

Just gone out and thought I'd try One Pedal Drive but couldn't find the option.
Being a man I didn't read the manual but I watched a video and it should be on but not my version of the software.

I just hate the idea of my foot slipping off the throttle at 70mph on the motorway…

That’s why on long stretches I’ll put the driving assistance mode/adaptive cruise control on. The biggest issue, as mentioned by someone earlier is not being able to coast e.g. I’ll often coast around a blind corner covering the brake, can’t really do that. I’m getting more used to the regen braking distances now though. It essentially means that to and from work I use 5% of the battery each way rather than 6%, not that I’m overly bothered about such things.

Looks like we will have some better options in the smaller van space soon from Kia - up to 240 miles range, so ~160-170 real world winter range on the motorway. Starts at 'sub £30k'.
Good to have more choice, it seems a good price although I see the lowest spec is 161bhp and 43kWh so that must be what you get for the 30k.

I like the Buzz as a family vehicle because it's cute but if you just need a work van then you probably just go for the most cost effective solution right?

Yes, been watching this one with some interest! Looks like it could be just what we need, although depends on what the load space is like with the back seats in place - ideally we would want something that could still fit a couple of bikes in, and the wheelbase on these looks a bit short.

Edit: just watched the first few mins of the video - there is a LWB passenger version, win!

I had a test drive in the Renault 5 this morning, I'm really impressed with it. Drives really well, very responsive, feels quicker and more powerful than I expected considering on paper it's the same horsepower (150) as my SEAT Leon. Ride quality was great, it smoothed out the terrible roads far better than my Leon does. Boot space was okay, rear seats are quite cramped but I seldom have rear passengers so that's not an issue. The interior quality was good, there's some hard plastics all over the place but the main bits feel nice to touch and the seats were comfortable though you do sit up a bit high due to the batteries under the floor. Software and interface was excellent too, Google Maps etc built in and Google Assistant seemed to be able to control a fair bit of the car via voice commands.

Problem is the real world range when driven like a van and loaded like a van, I'm not directly involved with it but the results of trials of EV vans at work was not great.

This one alleges to have the best range in class.

I assume when you say ‘driven like a van’ you mean when driven by angry man with no regards to fuel efficiency?

Also this definitely doesn't have the best range in class as its WLTP is less than the Buzz?

Edit: however the average UK van is something like 12.5k miles per year which is only 60 miles or so per weekday. There will always be the 10-20% where a typical e-van doesn't work but for most even a mid spec version should be more than enough
