Steam account recovery - asking for a friend...

Logged in via my phone. Aside from a few spam messages to my friends list, seems ok.

lesson learnt.
I don't know how effective it is, but something I've done on my steam account is also enable the steam family view, meaning if they manage to log in with the username and password, bypass the 2FA, they still need the PIN to bypass the family view before doing anything.

Nice, didn’t know that but I’ll definitely be doing it now.

I'm really surprised they did it so quickly, Steam CS is amongst the worst (read totally incompetent) there is.

I'm even more surprised your VAC status wasn't wrecked.

Seems it happened a lot. It was from what appeared to be Shroud’s twitch stream. Actively advertising skins with banners on the stream, and the link I followed was posted by a Twitch ‘bot’ in the feed.

Edit: link added

Another edit: Seems it’s an entirely fake stream. No idea how this works, but it definitely got me!

Yet another edit: Why am I publicly admitting to being so gullible, or at least being someone who doesn’t pay attention when they’re just bored and clicking around on tinterwebs??

Sorry for the thread necro, I wish I had read this earlier, I now too have had my Steam Account stolen and is in the hands of Steam support.
I stupidly clicked a link on discord for a free $50 steam gift card, took me to a steam community page, that looked legit, with a number going up of what I thought were gift cards being claimed.
I then signed into the steam community page hoping to claim my free $50 gift card, I even was sent a security code to my email to input, I then put in the code, didn't get a free gift card.

A few minutes later, I noticed I was signed out of my steam client, tried putting in my details and they were no longer registered :(

Spent hours researching and trying to get into my account then finally I managed to somehow self-lock my steam account and get in contact with steam support.
Told them everything and here we are, no account and all my games no longer available to me.

Luckily I didn't link a Paypal account and just sign in manually to Paypal on each transaction.

Had one reply from Steam, asking for more information, that came about 8 hours after I logged my ticket.

I'm praying I can get it sorted :(

Sorry to hear that
But yeah the old never click a link situation
Should always go log in instead
The scams are getting much better no broken English
To give it away easily
Can probably get AI to write the scam for you nowadays
Only good news is you didn't link a payment method
Hope you get it resolved and no major damage done

Thanks @Mcnumpty2323, yes like you say glad I didn't link a payment method. I started to doubt myself and have been checking my PayPal account regularly, but all is well so far, thankfully.
It all seemed so legit. Lesson learnt.

Hopefully someone else doesn't make the same mistake and steam can sort it out for me

I would change your pay pal password anyway
Might not need to
But better to do it anyway just in case

if you have emails from steam/valve that they sent u from buying games etc u can probably email them to valve to prove who u are and say to them well i have this game and that game, last game i bought was xxx, i had this on my wishlist or that (presuming u didnt have public profile) and other bits and pieces like that, to build up evidence the account was yours. Then talk it over with valve and email em or forward emails of steam stuff to em and say see its me. Hopefully u might get it back quicker that way. Its all about how much you can prove stuff. Especially receipts of stuff you bought with emails saying you did as it shows ur account name, dates, account number, etc. Also tell them exactly the link you did and where from so they can try to put a stop to it, and if you got any stuff on ur phone about the steamguard code txt request etc, share that with valve too i would think that could help.

Best of luck.

next time dont go lookin for dodgy stuff. :p

Edit - bah the dates of the posts in here, how did i not check, all i saw was a topic about steam recovery, read a few first posts, thought id chime in with some advice tho dunno how good it would be but i try, so click page 3 and reply. Now i feel daft :D

Good advice, thank you. I have emailed them a PayPal receipt of some games I bought and also a CD key image from LEFT4DEAD, I'll send them a copy of an email of some games I purchased on Steam.

Steam support playing silly beggars, after supplying the information from a game I purchased on Steam, email receipts and cd key images, they are saying because of the age and value of the account they want to know my Debit card details.
I have never used a Debit card to purchase steam games online, I have always used PayPal, I gave them this information anyway just incase on the off chance that I have used a debit card.

I told them I have many boxed games that use Steam and I can provide these,, and supplied another image of a boxed steam activation code.

Very frustrating!

Maybe they just want to confirm your id through a bank account like some companies do if u dont have a passport etc. For ur age and address etc mainly to say who u are is real etc. Unless its for some other reason. Tho i suppose u can ask why that was needed.

Bit annoying though I guess it's possible
They are being very careful if your account is valuable
One of the guys on here has in game items worth
5 grand each for virtual knifes or something crazy

Do they lock down the account while this is
Being resolved?
To stop whoever has access selling in game items etc?
That would be my big worry
That by time they resolve it everything of values gone

I think I have already locked the account, as I have an unlock code, but I'm worried the email for the confirmation that you get when you lock the account has gone to the thief who stole my account, as I didn't receive one and you are supposed to.
Just checked again and it is indeed still self-locked :)
