iRacing

The carnage at Sebring T1 will be a sight to behold, and then the nuclear amounts of crying that will follow. I cannot wait :D
I'm the same. I cannot wait to experience the carnage. It really will change how the 45 minute IMSA races for example will go. No longer will taking 2 or 4 tyres be worth it. Even in some of the endurance races where tyre where is less severe will have cars not changing tyres.

Have to say, GTP feels fantastic. I think it felt great last season on this v10 tyre apart from the crazy grip, but they feel amazing now. I had been flirting with LMU a bit but I would say that iRacing hypercars feel better after this update, just needs the hybrid next season and we're pretty much there I think. New lighting looks great too.

Warmup is obviously quite severe coming out of the pits, but I think getting just a little bit of heat in to them on the pace lap means they are kinda OK in races, even at Spa with a short start. No danger of being ran over by P2/GT3 at starts anyway.

Yea the tyre feels good on them and LMP2, they need to work on the GT3 tyre as a matter of urgency because they are not on the level of LMUs GT3s.

New ARCA car seems great, driving it around Portland was fun as was ripping it on the high line at Kansas

Yeah I gave the Caddy a try at Spa yesterday and it's night and day from last season in a good way. No more sends from orbit on GT3s because of the much reduced grip...well I hope not anyway :D The P2 still feels great which i'm very relieved about, the new tyres last season as well as the 2024 spec changes did slow it down but it's still great to drive

v10 tyres cannot come soon enough, it will transform every car in a good way if these v9.7 tyres are anything to go by

The tyres "turn on" very quickly at Spa. You should try Sebring. That place is deadly

How one looks after these tyres when they are new and cold is gonna have heavy implications on how the endure across a stint. Using the iRacing's own high downforce setup in the Caddy around Sebring I pushed hard from the off. Drop off was quick (lap 8) and by lap 16/17 I was down to 70% on the rear left. :o

Did anyone compete in the iRacing Sebring 12 hours over the weekend?
We did indeed. P1 in GTP baby!!!

The GTP SoF was 4.0k so quite a bit above my 3.3k iRating. I was on pace in the uber hot conditions but in the cooler temperatures I was much slower. We ran it in the Ferrari 499P (The only one in our split).

Grats! Ours didn't go so well - tbf three of the 4 of the team were making their car debut in LMP2. I qualified 2nd and managed to miss a massive incident before the start of the 1st lap which saw me lead into T1. Did my double and was leading at that point - we did start to go backwards but I had the most experience in the car so I knew that was probably going to happen. Unfortunately one of the lads binned it on two of his outlaps in separate stints meaning a good time of required repairs. Finished 8th in the end but we had fun which is all that matters.

Been there, done that, wore that t-shirt. These things happen but I find the team racing so much more enjoyable than solo’ing stuff.

That win for us was my first official special event win. Took just over a year to get with many misses but success will come.

Are you part of a team or doing it as a bunch of mates? Most teams require a minimum practice count before being allowed to drive. The incidents on cold tyres could have been avoided had the drivers done more practice?

A bit of both I guess - we're a team in a loose sense of the word but it is essentially sim racing mates in a Discord who do some iRacing and special event when we can. I along with one other guy are the most experienced and then we have several others who have varying degrees of time in sim.

The two newest guys are on the slower side - but they did a fair amount of laps and they were fine in traffic and at a comfortable pace generally though I don't think they practiced many outlaps unfortunately. Definitely a learning experience but it's all good.

Big development update with lots of news on season 3

New GT3 tyre model finally !

Our most significant car project this season was a whopper that spanned six months of intensive development—a comprehensive redevelopment of our entire GT3 racecar class. I am going to get pretty detailed here, so bear with me. Whether you’re a GT3 fan or not, these details are well worth a read and offer insights into the level of detail our passionate developers pursue with their work.

Starting with the tires, we have developed new Dry and Wet tires; both use iRacing's newest tire physics model (first debuted with GTP). To develop the GT3-specific model, we utilized customized software and tooling to simulate a vast set of tire constructions and models at faster-than-real-time speeds. These models were then thoroughly tested and iterated by our vehicle dynamicists and driving specialists, in collaboration with external professional drivers who race the same cars in real life. Many things have been improved, culminating in tires that behave more like those in the real world.

Additionally, we have overhauled the aerodynamics on the majority of the cars in the GT3 class using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling. We have updated ride height maps, yaw and roll sensitivities, and the effect of changing rear wing settings. After tires, aerodynamics has the greatest impact on in-car experience so we put a lot of effort into capturing both aerodynamic performance and nuances that impact subjective feel.

Here is a detailed list of highlights and things you will notice as you acclimate to the changes:

  • One of the most important goals in tire development was to reduce tire surface temperature spikes to a reasonable level. This reduced sensitivity to sliding is a significant step forward in our modeling, resulting in tires that are more resilient to short-term sliding and have better post-slide grip recovery. Critically, a spin or off-track event no longer destroys a tire's grip for the rest of a run.
  • The temperature of the tires when the cars leave the pits has been lowered and is now closer to that of a tire sitting in the hot sun. Out laps will require extra patience as the tires come up to performance temps and pressures.
  • The fastest lap on a set of new tires will be around the fourth or fifth timed lap (depending on track length, weather conditions, and driving aggression). Late in a fuel stint, it is possible to abuse the tires and suffer more lap time degradation. It is also possible to conserve tires and have a chance to push for fast laps late in a stint when the fuel level is low. Expect to change tires each time a full tank of fuel is added.
  • The tire spring rates are now closer to those currently used in real life. Compared to the current tires, the vertical rate is softer, and the lateral stiffness is higher. This means that the chassis will deflect more under vertical (aerodynamic and/or banking) load.
  • To assist with dynamic ride height control on these more compliant tires, we have added bump rubbers and the ability to adjust their static gaps to cars that did not previously have this Garage setup option.
  • The updated aerodynamics have different sweet spots in ride height from what you are used to. Some setup work will be needed to ensure you are extracting the maximum from each car’s aerodynamic platform.
  • You may notice that the cars behave differently in small and large slides. This is partly due to the updated aerodynamic yaw modeling. Different side view body shapes provide varying degrees of stabilizing side force. Similarly, different complete aerodynamic packages perform better and worse when it comes to downforce and aerodynamic balance. Our updated aerodynamic modeling does a better job of capturing this nuance.
  • Another step closer to reality is the addition of front splitter height as a determining factor in passing technical inspection. The front splitter at its lowest point, front ride height at the axle centerline, and rear ride height must all be above 50mm. Most cars will need to run higher ride heights.
  • Current setups will become obsolete. Save a record of ride heights (and rake) that work with specific rear wing angles to use as a starting point for 2025 Season 3 setups (or use the iRacing recommendations).
  • The BoP for this season does not include any changes to mass or engine power levels. Only aerodynamic downforce and drag have been adjusted.
To sum things up, with our now more realistic model, GT3 cars in iRacing will drive far better at the limit, and if you go over the limit. The driving experience is more accurate and enjoyable, and we can’t wait to share this work with you all in a few weeks. We are incredibly proud of the result, and our team has set the standard for GT3 racing in the entire sim racing landscape.

After 3 years Iracing on and off, I just had my first race in the rain. Oh boy, was that an experience. :). Spun off 3 or four times and ended up racing like a grannie coming back from a shopping trip. Slow and steady just to stay on the track. Ended sixth.. Possibly only 6 people finished :)

You also need to bear in mind that you'll have to get out of rookie series first, then earn a B license (I think, been a few years since I subbed).

It's not especially difficult, but does mean you'll have to factor in purchasing some additional cars and tracks before you can drive GT3.

iRacing isn't mega-expensive overall, but the cost is very front-loaded when you're just starting out due to the content you'll need.

With the amount of free rookie series content I personally wouldn't rush into the higher series. When I started with IR we only had the Mx5, skip barber and spec ford to sink our teeth into.

At the moment though LMU is where its at in regards to gt3 so if you are really busting to get into that then I would go there. Be interesting to see how this next update goes, I think they have employed a few real gt3 drivers to get feedback off.

Can easily get B license from mx5 and gr86. Just need to learn when to push and race and when not too.
