***The Official Manly Shaving Thread***

The thread on my Muhle R89 is failing, and it's only a matter of time before it gives up the ghost!

What would you replace it with? The Edwin Jagger DE89 is very similar and has great reviews like the Muhle.

It's tempting to simply replace it with another, especially as it's been great since the day I purchased it, but the itch to try something new has set in ;)

Edwin Jagger 3ONE6 stainless steel does look like the final boos of razors, it looks good too, especially in that post of yours @rG-tom

The Edwin Jagger DE89’s threads are even worse than the Muhle’s. It’s a great shave, but it’s thinly-plated pot metal.

I 1st started DE shaving with a Muhle R89 and over the years have bought several other handles but it's still my go to for the easiest DE shave as it's not too aggressive.

I tend to use Taylor's creams most of the time but the Body Shop Aloe cream is good (shame everywhere is struggling to stock it although it is available online), I also have a Mitchell's Wool Fat soap and the missus bought a £2 Wilkinson Sword soap from Tesco which isn't too bad.

In a bit of a hairy faced panic, I've caved in and purchased a temporary razor just to put me on :D or so I thought!

It's surprisingly good -> https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BVB3Y76J?

I didn't like it at first because the handle feels very light, almost like hollow thin metal or plastic coated metal, the handles weight is noticeable compared to how heavy the head is, but it works great.

I'm not 100% committed yet, but this one will probably be my next purchase as I've read lots of good information about it, it's often on offer much cheaper and I personally think it looks good -> https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07HM9D1BN?

After ten or so years of rocking a berd I’ve decided to return to my clean routes of clean shaven. Is anyone able to recommend some shaving soap/brush etc? Feel like a treat as opposed to Gillette shave gel.

Have a look at connaught shaving? I've bought a load of blades over the years from them. I'm about to buy some shaving cream as my last tube of l'oreal is almost at the end.

I've just ordered some shaving creams from Connaught:
Taylor of Old Bond Street - Cedarwood (150ml), then the following 10ml sample pots:
Taylor of Old Bond Street - Jermyn Street
Taylor of Old Bond Street - Lime Zest
Extro - Terra Deglis Del 1927
Extro - Pesca
Extro - Legno di Sandalo

The L'oreal protective cream I have at the moment is basically a heavy Cederwood essential oil based scent. The two different brands have different bases trying a few of each allows me to see what works as a base, then worry about the scent. Quite looking forward to it oddly.

Nice, I’ll have a look. Thanks mate.

How are you getting on with that?

My first order from them I basically did a spread across all their trial packs and added additional blades. I think I ended up with over 100 blades.. took a while but quickly found the blades that worked for me and those that didn't. Also worth getting one the feather blade disposal tins. They last along time (the first keeps going so the second is sat empty!).

In the end I found Feather New Hi-Stainless platinum plated worked best. Other good ones I found were the Astra Platinum. The pack decent ones were the Gillette 7o'clock (but they're russian so no buy for me). The rest were ok and the worst for me was the Treet blade. So my second blade order was ten packs of Feather Hi-Stainless ... which will last a while!

I'm using an Edwin Jagger DE89BL if I remember correctly - it' definitely the 89 and looks identical.

I found that the supermarket sold brands just didn't stop the blade from leaving rashes - that included Wilkinson soap, king of shave gels etc. Only when I found L'oreal protective cream (it doesn't foam) that it solved the problem and smelt good. Now it seems l'oreal has stopped making it and there's none on the shelves.. so I'm just experimenting with new sets of creams to find both something that the base works but also smells good.

I rarely encounter problems nowadays shaving, though recently I have moved into a new works accommodation where I spend a few nights a week and it has very hard water. To the point it dries my skin out completely. I don't get a as close a shave, and i'm always coming out with razor bumps.

Anyone have product recommendations or rituals to mitigate against horrible calcy water?

We have hard water here, the Mrs always complained about it. The sort of water that a splash leaves scale deposit.

I'm sort of in the same boat. I found the soaps and gels you can normally get leave rashes etc. Until I found the now discontinued L'oreal protective shaving cream that solved the problem. Unlike all the soaps and creams I tried it doesn't lather so it's thicker. So I'm currently about to try some more creams with different bases to see how they work.

The bits have just arrived - an unbox/'smelling' first impressions.

The top three are close, different style of shave and smell.

Ordered in preference
1. Extro - Legno di Sandalo
Pot Smell - clean smell of subtle sandalwood soap.
Finger: again thicker, stiffer paste, and the smell evens out into a soft subtle sandalwood soap smell.
Shaving experience: This was a pig to get to initially lather on the face, but once going it was good and the cut was really nice under the blade. Probably the best shave yet. Smooth after and I've got used to perhaps the slightly collapse and re-lathering with a little water. Smells a bit like saddle soap but not bad either in the longer term but eased off to basically no smell.
Only weird thing is the creme has lots of little white bits in that are left behind from the lather. Still this one has gone on the short list for a second shave and a long term option.

2. Taylor of Old Bond Street - Cedarwood
Pot Smell: Hmm this smells of soap more than it does cedarwood. The L'oreal cedarwood is far heavier/intensely bombastic smell that eases off after the shave.
Finger: Broke through the upper crust, on the finger is smells of soap, the cream feels relatively thick. Soft slightly soapy smells lasts.
Shaving experience: fast lathering with little product, long lasting lather that slightly thinner under the blade than the Extro. Leaves face feeling clean and a little dry immediately and throughout the day. The smell doesn't change from the soapiness and you can smell that throughout the day. A decent shave, with a clean after feeling.
Longer term the pot soapy smell has eased off, I assume this is because the the top of the cream dries a little and looses some of the smell? Either way it's decent but can leave skin a little dry, really need a something to moisturise after.

3. Extro - Terra degis del 1927
Pot Smell: Wow, imagine an old Middle Eastern shop with an overpowering cacophony of intense smells.. warm, close in, not subtle.
Finger: stiffer paste, thicker between the fingers, and the smell subtle out with complex smells with an under tone of Middle Eastern soap. This eases off in the long term leaving a amber smell.
Shaving experience: Next day after the cedar wood TOBS, the product lathers slower and needs more agitation, the resulting lather is immediately as thick as the TOBS but after one side of the face the other side had started to thin. The lather feels slick and thin under the blade (new feather), and after the shave remained with a film lubricated feel. Smell eases off a bit compared to the pot but the lather smell is an experience, the remaining film smells like a softer version of the pot - warm. Even after a hot shower that smell has eased off but when I move I can smell the long term Amber/eastern warm smell, but without the slick feeling that now is dry but not as dry as the TOBS after.

4. Taylor of Old Bond Street - Jermyn St
Pot Smell: This has a really clean fresh smell, I can't place it but it smells like you'd expect a double shirt cuffs shop to smell (citrus smell). Nice, clean and not imposing.
Finger: Soft whipped cream, clean smell linger.
Shaving experience: During having a shave, it struck me - this feels and smells like a combination of Cedarwood and Zest. It's thinner than the cedarwood but thicker than the zest with definite zest/cedarwood smell. Lather feels thinner than the cedarwood and Extro but thicker than the Zest, gives a closer shave and leaves the characteristic TOBS dryness following the shave. Little to no smell after a shower and simply soft skin. As a general rule I don't normally use anything after a shave/shower to moisturise but I could see with the TOBS dryness that it could possibly be useful. Decent shave, relatively easy to lather and doesn't smell of soap. Possibly the least noticeable smell so doesn't interfere with any products after.

5. Taylor of Old Bond Street - Lime Zest
Pot Smell: In th pot is smells of lime curd, zesty.
Finger: soft but thick cream, has a longer but lighter and smoother zesty smell close in. This changes smell between the pot and once on the skin.
Shaving experience: slower lather but once lathered it's thick and lasts the entire shave, the smell of lime zest is great, no smell of soap after the shave. On the face after the shave the skin feels soft, clean and not oily. There’s a little very weak zest smell. The shaving is close under the blade.
This is after the degis del yesterday, and thes shaving brush smelt nice from the previous shave. It definitely took more product (which seemed thinner both in the pot and the lather took longer than the cedarwood) to get a full lather.
Overall I feel this is a lighter shave than perhaps the TOBS cedarwood and Extro 1927. It's less noticeable after smell too, it's there but very subtle my deodorant smell overrides it.

Wouldn't buy again
Extro - Pesca
Pot Smell: this smells like my grandma's bathroom, a mixture of clean soap smell and a very very soft something else.. it doesn't smell of peach. Almond perhaps?
Finger: stiffer thicker paste, again thicker between the fingers, the smell of soap lingers, soft and clean but a little too much like soap.
Shaving experience #5: This was a complete biatch to get to lather. Not really a cream but more like chunks of soap that didn't disolve easily during the lather. The cream felt thicker than the others almost like a paste with soap chunk in. Lather was thinner as a result, and it was a little patchy in lubing the blade glide.
Smells like the pot. Only after a shower and moving can I smell a little faint waft of peach. However during the shave I couldn't smell that - just the smell of an old tiled bathroom. Probably the least favourable experience so far due to the patchy nature and the shaving experience.

Contrasts
After a longer period they all have a base soap with a subtle difference scent smell, the outliers are the 1927 leaving a smell of amber soap, the Sandalo and the Cedarwood that have longer smelling soap+scent. The feeling of the fingers being rubbed - the TOBS all seem to be smooth then it feels quite dry but slightly tacky whilst the Extro feel smoother with perhaps a little residue and more natural. There also seems to be a family smell in their bases - the TOBS smells more flatter soapy, the Extro smells more acidic soapy. An hour later after washing hands the soapy smell has gone and it's left just the gentle scent. So, fingers crossed, that the full shave is better.

As a general feel of (what I assume is a common base to their ranges) - it feels that the TOBS leaves the skin drier where's the Extro leaves the shave feeling more slippery so far, although I have noted the Extro has more paste+chunks in it which need dissolving in the lathering.

:pBit of a personal question which I hope is ok on here as it's Shaving related!! I want to trim/shave the manhood area but don't know whats a good option to use, I've heard creams can burn, I usually give it a neaten up but afraid of ripping the sack :p need a few extra inches now

As much as I use a DE/safety razor on my face, I don't trust it on my other bits. 3 blade disposable plastic thing is very forgiving.

Personally though use a battery beard trimmer most of the time.

So overall I'm a little surprised they all smell a little soapy. I know my old Wilkinson swords soap used to smell like this, but the l'oreal was so bombastic in cedar that you didn't smell of soap. That's what I was expecting from a cream.

I'll have a shave and try the cedar wood.

Edit: Updated above with the shaving experience. Will add more over the coming days. What really is apparent is that the little 10ml pots have quite a few shaves worth in.

I just use Tesco's mate, get on fine.

But then I'm well hard.

My current setup.
Merkur long handle fitted with derby DE.
Muhle badger brush.
Taylors cedarwood cream. (Stick with classic)
Alum block
I also have a Dovo stainless shavette switchblade, which I use to shave my head. Tried using the Merkur, but wasn't getting a good finish.

I don't know if mentioned but in relation to disposing of the blades once they are done and dusted.
Look underneath the DE packet holder, it has another slot to slip in used blades.
