Steam Machine (OS) Build

I'll be doing my installation later this week. I'm a bit unsure of the variants eg steamOS, CachyOS and Bazzite. Obviously steamOS is what's on the decks and machine but the other two have me unsure.

If your JUST playing steam games in big picture mode with odd web browser
SteamOS - super stable slower updates of arch Linux maybe updates once or twice a month

if your wanting to consider playing games from epic, gog, battlenet
It be easier on Bazzite not impossible on steamOS but you’d need desktop mode to install those apps

Bazzite runs on fedora linux, it’s faster package updates than SteamOS maybe once a week generally stable but still early

If you want a standard desktop machine that you can do anything on including gaming CachyOS is possible option

Cachyos is super bleeding edge you have Linux package updates every few hours
Daily you’ll seee at least 5 updates

However packages are so new there basically just been releases of the dev pc available to download

CachyOS dies protect you by doing snapshots on updates which are tiny 12kbs for some of mine

I’ve been running cachyOS 4 weeks? I’ve killed boot up once as I updated my system when only half of the GUI packages were released to download

Snapshot fixed that, and updating 1 hour late was fine again

Thanks! Gives me some things to think over then before I get the final parts together then.
I might even just give them all a try and see which one works better for me I suppose.

Pretty much what I did

I used SteamOS and loved it, but found myself wanting to use discord and OBS which requires desktop mode because vavle in there wisdom doesn’t allow steam broadcast on Linux yet.. even though it works

So I think as using desktop 90% of time and some apps required OS tweaks which STEAMOS doesn’t allow as OS parts are read-only

So I jumped right to Cachy as I knew a desktop was required

If your using a TV experience I would use steam or Bazzite

If you going down desk route + gaming I’d go down cachyOS Or more stable Linux desktop distribution

It will mainly be used for TV gaming. I've got my desktop PC for desk gaming etc. This is for more of a lounge and chill unit some of the time. Perhaps I shall give SteamOS a try first then maybe try Bazzite. I could possibly look at a dual boot between the two and flip between the two and decide from that.

Looking at a couch gaming setup for myself. I want to play my steam, blizzard, GOG games. It will be an AMD build and I guess from installing the games in desktop mode it'll be 99% console mode just using a controller.

Steam or bazzite?

I've been fiddling away the past week or two building this in my spare time:

Ryzen 7 7700 £110
B850M MSI Mortar £145 (I could have went cheaper but wanted better VRM's for potentially dropping in later CPU's)
DDR5 SK Hynix Greens (OC to 6000 C28) £109
1000W MSI A1000GLS PSU £85
SF1000 - £110
2x2TB Drives pulled from my laptop that I am selling and no other purpose for currently.
Acer Nitro 9070 OC £260

I've triple booted it due to trying to dabble in GPU repairs. Windows and Linux for stress testing software, diagnostics etc and then steam OS.

I've called it the steam bench.
Although looking for a compact case with a handle that I can then use it between locations rather than an open air bench now.

I’d go with bazzite as it has support for non steam launchers out of the box

No hacking required might even be able to do some setup with controller only

Thanks smogsy, seen your case that's the one I want as well. I'm looking at a SFX PSU as that will give me more room for a bigger GPU and an aio to try and keep it quiet in the lounge.

So I went with seasonic gx core 850w it’s standard atx and is short so it can have 9070xt with no issues. The osu is not loud but louder than everything part from GPU idle this in a slient room soon as tv is on cannot hear it

Personally being a quiet phreak every AIO Is louder than Air

Case fan is running at 1200rpm single noctua exhaust only

Bequiet are much louder than new noctuas

Single tower cooler 65c full load
GPU custom curve 55c in games 73c junction temp

I’m using the full mesh case
