B550 prices, ridiculous.

MSI

US price excl VAT / EU price incl VAT

B550 Gaming Carbon Wifi : 219$ / 249€
B550 Gaming Edge Wifi : 189$ / 209€
B550I Gaming Edge Wifi : 199$ /219€
B550 Tomahawk : 179$ / 199€
B550 Mortar Wifi : 169$ / 189€
B550 Mortar : 159$ / 179€
MSI B550-A Pro : 139$ / 159€

What am I missing?

OCUK have X570 boards cheaper...aren't they better specced than B550?

Look at the normal pricing of the B450 motherboards they replaced. The B450 Mortar for a very long time was around £80~£95. The US price for the B550 Mortar with 20% VAT,would equate to around £170. You might as well get an X570 motherboard!!

Well that's kind of the point I'm making.

Why buy an inferior board that's more expensive than the superior board.

Interesting tidbit about white motherboard i.e. Titanium: MSI says they can't get signal quality with a white PCB to be as good as a black PCB yet, at least not for PCIe gen 4 and super high RAM speed, so all B550 and X570 use a black PCB.

Edit: B450 non-MAX not supporting Zen 3 is not true, but the BIOS will be toned down.

Edit 2: Price list (MSRP in USD w/o tax)

B550 Gaming Carbon Wifi: $219

B550i Gaming Edge WiFi: $199

B550 Gaming Edge WiFi: $189

B550 Tomahawk: $179

B550M Mortar WiFi: $169

B550M Mortar: $159

B550 Gaming Plus: $149

B550-A Pro: $139

B550M Bazooka: $139

B550M Pro-VDH WiFi: $129

B550M Pro-Dash: $119

Some of it might be the pci4, some might be the wifi6 which many boards seem to have, some of it might be the 2.5 internet (which I hope isn't hobbled like the intel boards), but altogether it does speak of grabbing extra pounds for the sake of slight future compatibility.

Still glad I went X570 for around £170 about 7-8 months ago and did not listen to the all knowing and infallible Panos who recommended I wait for B550 which would be out in November 2019 :p

Am I likely to be hampered much by my 3000mhz ram? Considering an upgrade to 32gb 3600.

Depending on your GPU, possibly. My Timespy CPU physics score went from 10,3xx (with 3600 C15 XMP) to 112xx @3800 C16 w/ tuned sub timings. Tombraider bench picked up like 15fps on the min side IIRC.

3600 C15 was a pretty strong starting point too.

If you want higher clocks, put your effort into cooling. I run mostly driving sims in VR so, with headphones on, I have my 280mm AIO go to blast at 50C. My 3800X runs all cores at 4.4ghz in Project Cars 2 with temps in the mid to high 40's...stock.

These CPU's boost like graphics cards.
