I don't know how large your garden is, but while you're having work done on it, would there be room for a dog run? I mention this as this way if you are out for any length of time in the future, you could leave the dog outside, rather than in the house.
Have you also thought about maybe a holiday including a swim with dolphins? Small children can do this with bouyancy aids and I know that many have found it to be very theraputic, and I am sure that it would lift the spirits of the whole family. We were lucky enough to do this 2 years ago and I am sure that it had beneficial effects on those members of the family who have various physical and mental issues.

Puppy sounds a great idea. I donated money not just to speed the treatment up, but for you to have an easier time and to spoil your beautiful little daughter some. Spend the money how you want, and a kiddy safe garden, with a dog and some left over is a perfect idea in my opinion
