****Official GTX580 user reviews/benchmarking/overclocking thread****

Quality sound or 3 way 580 SLI..hmmmmm, at your res I can see some real benefits going 3 way.

So in other words after the 69** cards you wont be able to get an updated version of MSI afterburner?

After the 69** are out we will get an official release that supports 580 voltage control.

1680x1050 and 480 SLI overkill?

Could always get one of those external dolby headphone/7.1 USB jobbies - better sound quality than most onboard with great surround processing for gaming.

Hard decision allright especially as I just changed the opamps on my STX and got the sound just right. One alternative would be to use multiple sli bridges to connect the 1st to the 2nd, 2nd to the 3rd and 1st to the 3rd :). That would let you run the cards in slot1, 3, and 4 at 16x,8x,8x and use the dedicated slot2 4x for sound. But it's very messy doing this as you can see from the link below. Would much prefer to use the dedicated 3way bridge.

Not quite in the same league as 580 SLI but seeing as I paid less than half the price I'm not complaining.

** goes back to nursing PSU **[/QUOTE]Very impressive, ill hopefully be ordering another gigabyte 470 0c this weekend, before the price shoots up again, the sli bug has bitten again.:D

It's an option allright mate. Will consider it. However for music I really want to use my Monitor Audio BX2's and Marantz PM6003 amp. Have that amp hooked up to the rca outs on the essence stx at the moment and it sounds every bit as good as when I had a dedicated mid range dac. Blast it. I should have kept my dac and could have just outputted via the onboard toslink. Balls.

There's something wrong with that... I get 32 fps average with HD 5870 here and my i7-920 is only overclocked to 3.2 GHz. That is the result I got from running on ONE GPU!

I've got my POV GTX 580 coming tomorrow though... can't wait to ditch CrossFireX and go back to a single GPU card as I seem to have spent more time getting games working since I bought my HD 5870 in March and less time actually playing them! No, really, it feels like it.

AMD's drivers are OK if you only have one card but their CrossFireX support is lacklustre to say the least and games rarely scaled well (assuming AMD had bothered to support it and not just disabled one GPU as they seem fond of doing... *cough*Blur*cough* and *cough*Darksiders*cough*), certainly not as well as NVIDIA's current cards do. Not that I'm interested in SLI anyway as I've learnt my lesson with CFX, i.e. stick with the most powerful single GPU card!

*EDIT*
Oops, saw that the benchmark had 8xMSAA enabled not the 4xMSAA I tested with so that is right as 8xMSAA tanks the HD 5870 in that test on my setup too, presumably because of the lack of video memory. Sorry about that.

What the difference between EVGA Precision and MSI Afterburner? I always thought Precision was for NVIDIA cards, since v2.0.0 won't work on my current HD 5870 CFX setup, and Afterburner was for ATI cards.

Afterburner is miles better and has lots more settings compared to precision, especially when overclocking and changing voltages etc,you can also monitor a lot of the GPUs date ie-Gpu usage/Memory usage etc.

Precision is ok if you just want to check temperatures and apply small overclocks and is a very light easy program to use.
