Was thinking of getting the GN but it appears not many are all that happy with it due to some short comings like the GPU is noticable slow and various ICS issues?

Anyway I think I might steer clear unless these issues are not really noticable?

If it's not a GN what would be a good alternative for those who have the GN and were considering swapping to something better?

I don’t know where you are getting the GPU shortcomings from but as far as I am aware there aren't any. The was a major issue (volume bug) with ICS but that was fixed. There are a few ICS niggles but they are minor ones such as the lack of speed when changing orientation and missing spell check in the browser. Really nothing that you can’t live with. They will be fixed in the next OTA.

Yeah, seems kind of an odd thing to say. I know of many people with it and not one that are not happy with it...

My phone was bugging out a couple of weeks ago, leading to a fuming uvarvu. I bought an iPhone 4S as an extremely foolish impulse buy but returned it the next day. That phone is just awful. I owned it for less than twelve hours - it really is that bad. I had to squint at the tiny arse screen and ended up fat fingering everything because the keyboard was so small!

Put it simply, you can take a Galaxy Nexus and make it as buggy as you like but it will STILL be better than an iPhone. My goodness.

I think that's a bit over the top, the iPhone isn't bad at all.

If you want a big screen though it's a fairly poor choice.

very true, when i was in the states, i lived on my phone, had a USA sim card, and went through 1gig of data over 10 days, used it for footage, pictures, satnav and the web for hotels and things to do as well as videos and games at the airport and on the plane... did not let me down at all.

The GN having plain AOSP and access to the latest android updates is appealing. I know now to check out phones before jumping in and ordering so I had a look on XDA and there are posts about issues which is expected but now that I have searched a little deeper I can see that perhaps the GPU wasn't the best choice for a phone with such a high resolution screen but it is considered fine and the other issues are mostly minor or not really a concern. I actually expected much less issues being talked about and many more positives.

It appears mostly people are underwhelmed probably because they had too high expectations what with it being Google's flagship phone. Now that I know more about it I definitely had too high expectations.

I suspect he can't really justify upgrading so is trying to put himself off.
You appear to be mean spirited. :(

I have a Galaxy S II and I think it is a great phone but some things annoy me about it so I was thinking of giving it to my son who has asked for a proper android phone (he has asperger syndrome so no is kind of out of the question).

Thank you. :p

This is why I got a Nexus as a Galaxy S II replacement -

  • Unmodified ICS that I don't have to wait for and future updates are very quick (not that I'm massively bothered about the latter)
  • I really don't like TouchWiz and think it makes the software feel cheap and nasty personally, while functionally it's fairly good
  • I really like the soap bar design of it over the other Samsung designs
  • I like the notification LED which is often a bizarre omission on Samsung devices
  • The screen fixes my main gripes about AMOLED panels and is quite possibly the most important feature of the device for me; I'm not a big fan of the S II screen
  • The SD card slot omission is stupid but I can live with it
  • The internals, while out of date, are still very quick and it doesn't seem to make a blind bit of difference to real world performance, which is ultimately all that matters (short term)
  • The camera seems simply 'good', but I don't take that many pictures, same for video
  • I'll no doubt change it for a Galaxy S III/iPhone 5 in a few months so long-term doesn't concern me

@Robbo. Good explanation and understand the privilege you have in being easily able to exchange the GNex for the newest in a few months time. You may have to wait a bit longer however. I see today that Samsung mentioned that they were not going to be announcing the S III (presumably the name for the replacement for the S II) at MWC but sometime in the first half of the year at a Samsung dedicated event (more Apple style) rather than a trade show, which might mean June. The good news for you is that the announcement will be close to the availability of the device rather than the inexorable wait that accompanied other announcements and leaks. Of course that is good news for GNex users as it means we have the leading (note Andy CR15 I did not say flagship!) Android device for a few months longer.

According to PocketNow, the "S III") handset should feature the Samsung-built Exynos 4412 chip sporting four Cortex-A9 processing cores by fabless semiconductor maker ARM Holdings, each clocked at 1.5GHz. Boasting a 50 percent faster graphics performance compared to its predecessor, the Exynos 4210 is a new piece of silicon that will be manufactured on Samsung’s 32-nanometer fabbing technology. The closest competitor to the Exynos 4412 is a 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core chip that should debut in the HTC Zeta smartphone.

The Nexus and 4S will last me nicely until the new 'wave' of devices come out.

I'm quite looking forward to it all (as usual :p). I have no doubt that we'll just end up with the iPhone owners getting the iPhone 5 and the Android owners getting the Galaxy S III. HTC are going to need something really special to stand out this year and Sony are taking a bit too long to get the Xperia S to market. If they could release it right now for example a lot of people would go for one to try it out if nothing else.

After trying out various roms I've settled with Apex (v1.0) and Franco kernel (3.0.18) using Nova as an alternative launcher and I have to say that this has completely breathed new life into my phone. It's also noticeably faster and has improved battery life. Not to mention more options and settings than I know what to do with :D:D:D

This is why I love android. FULL control over absolutely everything.
