What is it that makes people hate Apple so much?

The fact that Apple users appear so sensitive to criticism that they require their own 'walled garden' forum where they can talk in safety from the big bad rest of the world :p

OH I WENT THERE :p

I think a lot of people hate the culture of hype and fanboyism associated with Apple products. You have to admit their product launches are pretty cringe worthy.

I don't think it has much to do with cost or being jealous.

For me the main reason people hate on apple comes down to jealously and cost. Got to be understandable to hate on something you can't have, in other words afford. It's like a reassurance what you currently have is was the better option for you. It's like everything in this society, you hate in what you can't have.

I can afford apple products but I choose not to use them as I dislike the ecosystem and it offers me nothing in regards to functionality that is worth swapping my current set ups.

views like the one expressed there by yourself is part of the polarisation that is being talked about. it comes across as pretentious and devoid of facts and frankly incites a backlash purely by how it has been expressed.

biggest issue for me is cost. In pure hardware terms Apple rarely bring anything better to market, and in OS terms it's basically a BSD Unix system with extras bolted on. When you go and see a Mac for example and it's a couple hundred quid more for roughly the same or slightly inferior hardware (not the design...) I find it very hard to stomach. Sometimes the odd product stands out (Air is quite keenly priced, but I expect that to change shortly) as being pretty good value, but the rest aren't so much in my mind...
People always tell me it just works, but recently even that has started to change with more and more problems. No malware, well when you get a decent market share that will also come. I'm not sure of the exact figures, but I believe Mac market share is back under 5% again. The only products where Apple's strategy means anything to me is with iOS where the closer software to hardware ties means it can perform better, but then the closed system means I wouldn't probably take the plunge.

I didn't want to post in here I really didn't...... But;

See now this sort of nonsense just makes me cross.

I use computers to get work done, and apple don't make a computer powerful enough to do it, I don't hate them for it, I just don't buy them, but what really irritates me are the apple users who tell me how mistaken or jealous I am, now that I do hate, and as I work with a lot of graphic designers, I spend a lot of time cross!

Apple are expensive, so um, well done you for having the disposable income to buy one!

When OSX can run my 20 odd grands worth of software in a way that is more usable than my current box, I'll buy a couple, but until then would all apple users please refrain from the jealousy thing?

I shall crawl back under my rock and eat my gruel alone with my 'cheap' little pc.

There's no need to get upset. Look at who you are replying to, and I'll just leave this here:

The rest of the thread is well worth a read too.

It's hilarious that we even have a thread about hating a brand.

Really? You have sufficient time and energy to hate a brand of computer goods?

I'm not sure many people would even have the time of day to think about it, unless they're asked.

However, I've been working in and out of design studios for years and because I'm a designer, I get asked all the time, "Why don't you use a mac?"

In short, I couldn't really care less about the brand, but I do get a trifle irritated by some of the users' attitude to my choices, so I like to point out the flaws in their arguments, everyone needs a hobby!

So it's a nice quiet work day, and here we are....

IMHO the thread title doesn't help...
But it's on a techy forum and I'm sure it will crop up again and again...
I might be going out on a limb here, and fully expect to be flamed till the bovines grace the dwelling...but....I expect Macs to slowly dwindle away. More iOS devices were sold last year than the total Mac production in history, every OSX release is getting more and more features borrowed from iOS, and slowly but surely Mac market penetration is going down. A couple of years ago I saw a subtle shift to creative types getting Macs, but as has been said a few post above, computers are tools and Macs don't really do anything better well enough to justify the larger hardware costs and/or initial outlay anymore. As money is a little tighter people seem to be settling for a notch lower in hardware, and this is telling. Also, with recent Apple mistakes (Final Cut Pro X anyone, nope it's worse than the previous version and runs like a dog) and them moving towards an app store mentality I know a fair few who are thinking of jumping back to Windows for their next pc. You should hear the debate about where Logic is heading...
Anyway, I feel the heat coming...

If you get flamed it will be because much of your argument doesn't make sense. OS X is borrowing features from its sister OS, and that means Macs will die out? That doesn't make sense. Final Cut Pro X is made by Adobe, not Apple, so the design errors are Adobe's fault, not Apple's.

Anyway, I don't want to go on, lest you take up your cross as one being flamed, and I get branded a zealous fanboi OMG IT'S HILARIOUS TO SPELL IT WITH AN I.

exactly - the same hate is applied across other premium brands like alienware and so on. If people cant afford something, they rage about it

LOL the reason why its titled as such is at the time of the start of the thread the amount of vitriol directed to Apple/Apple users here was absurd - why the thread was forced to be made...

ps3ud0

Yup, I expect to get flamed I know. Yes Final Cut Pro X is made by Adobe, it's the changes in oSX Lion that have caused problems...same with Photoshop etc. The point is, market share is going down and people seem less inclined to spend more money than they have to, making Macs seem less value. PC manufacturers have got round to making their products better designed, like Apple do and that is also eroding their market. Borrowing OS features means people might possibly move away from OSX onto iOS as they have similiar features, I mean witness the success of the iPad, it can't help your Mac sales can it? Loads of people I know didn't get a Macbook because an iPad did most of what they wanted, and came in at half the cost.
