Dark Souls 9/10

One of the toughest games I have ever played. I loved the atmosphere and feel of the world. And I apreciated the sense of achievement of beating the bosses given the utterly brutal difficulty, though I never want to go against any Boss named "Manus" ever again.

Manus is so awesome. Artorias is probably my favourite boss but Manus is a close second. I love how aggressive the DLC bosses are.

Alan Wake

Where to start...

Positives

  • Very good performance, and seemed to be well optimized, just extremely well polished all round. No glitches, bugs, crashes, anything. Looks lovely as well.
  • Excellent story, and I do mean excellent. Just my kind of thing. Very cinematic and engaging, not least because the Cutsenes, voice acting, script were all top-drawer....Oh and one of the best soundtracks in gaming history as well imo
  • The chapters structure works very well for this game. IT is mainly down to this that the pacing is excellent. The story really benefits from this.
  • Incredible atmoshpere
  • Some really fun gameplay with some cool puzzles thrown in.
  • A few surprises as well, such as I had no idea there were driving sections!...and it is a lot more open-world than I thought it would be. Exploration is also well rewarded through hidden caches and manuscript pages, and there are plenty of chances to explore.
  • Checkpoints work really well.
  • Some great characters, and a very interesting protagonist.
  • The right length. Not too long, as I often find games running out of ideas towards the end, this one was just the right length
  • The ending is perfect!....Haven't felt like that after beating a game in ages...in fact possibly ever!
Negatives

  • Gameplay did get slightly repetitive towards the end.
  • Just a little slow to get going tbh, and early on it can be a little confusing.
  • It was obviously meant to be a lot more ambitious. I mean, it looks to me like it was almost planned as an open world game, but I suppose you can't really have that focused a story with a game like that. this isn't really a negative, but it would have been interesting to see it liker that.
  • I played it on too low a difficulty...there was far too much ammo laying around:p

In summary, this is almost the perfect game for me. It is all about the story for me in games, and I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a game so much! ...I grew up on Lovecraft, Kafka, Philip K Dick, Stephen King etc, and loving TV shows such as Twin Peaks/Twilight Zone. This game is heavily influenced by these, exploring similar themes such as shifting realities, paranoia, possible mental illness of the protagonsit etc, with a deliciously surreal twist to it, and as such, it was tailor made for me! Right up to the last minute, I did not know how it was going to play out. The game just oozes quality in every area.

Outstanding! 9.5/10

...on to the DLC now:D

Alan Wake's American Nightmare

A strange one to review for the following reason- I got it in a bundle with Alan Wake for a combined total of £5.99. When others originally played it, it was long after Alan Wake so they saw it as a stand-alone follow up....for me it was pretty much just dlc for Alan Wake.

Positives

  • Great performance and no bugs, once again some decent PC options.
  • More excellent story telling of a quality rarely seen in games. It is told in a completely different way to Alan Wake- as an episode of the fictional TV show 'Night Springs'(Twilight Zone/The Outer Limits basically) and it works very well. Baring in mind that it is meant to bridge the gap between Alan Wake and the sequel, it accomplishes it very well
  • Answered some questions from Alan Wake and tied in with some of the characters quite well such as Barry and the 'Old Gods of Asgard'.
  • Another great soundtrack with great use of old and new songs. Found myself singing 'Balance Slays the Demon' earlier:p
  • Good villain(introduced in Alan Wake) and the video segments were great and quite disturbing.
  • Some good new gameplay additions. The new enemies were generally very good, new weapons were great(and made perfect sense with the narrative as well;)). Also the addition of being able to make some choices was welcome, nothing groundbreaking, but the foundations have been laid for the future.
Negatives

  • Not as technically impressive as Alan Wake. Atmosphere was nowhere near as creepy, but then it wasn't supposed to be really. Also the graphics did not seem as good.
  • A few gameplay changes that I did not like tbh. Flashlights not harming unless you focus for example
  • Forgetful secondary characters.
  • I suppose some people might point to it not being long enough, but as I said, it was basically just another dlc episode for me, so I didn't really feel that.
  • Not sure how I feel about the use of video instead of cutscenes. Could work out well, as they will be cheaper, so can use budget elsewhere, but they seem a little out of place to me. I like a mix of the two like in Alan Wake.
  • Gameplay still suffers from a little repetition(literally!)
In summary, it was just like playing an episode of 'The Outer Limits' but with the benefit of continuing and expanding upon a story that I loved as well....what is not to love about that?! Can't wait for Alan Wake 2

Answers questions from Alan Wake and bridges the gap to no2, but best treated as a piece of dlc rather than a standalone game 8/10

Borderlands 2
9/10 (fanboy score) 8.5/10 (realistic score).

What can i say.. i was hooked on the first Borderlands and spent wayyyyy to many hours on the PC and xbox versions, but loved every minute of it.

Borderlands 2 = More guns, more fun, more detail, fun campaign, more grindin' and fantastic multiplayer (connection withstanding). The only thing im waiting for is a dlc to match general knoxx... with by any means is a hard task.

Far cry 3, took a me to play it even though it had been installed for months but I'm glad I did go for it as I really enjoyed this one. Was very disappointed with far cry 2 but found 3 to be a joy to play and I really didn't get to bored with unlocking towers and bases.

8/10 great game and still wish I hadn't completed so quickly, oh it looks great to maced of!

Crysis 3 - 7/10 Loved it but way too short a single player experience for the money.

I know that short single player missions are commonplace these days but it's still a disappointment when the fun finishes.

I disagree with players moaning about short games on the whole.

Play it on hardest settings once youve done it on normal (or as i call it - the warm up)

Legendary setting on Halo was what made it such a great game but a lot of people would've missed this.

Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 with the Brutal Doom mod (and others).

Just what I was looking for :

* game play enhanced by the Brutal mod like nothing I've seen yet
* the music from the PSX version (by far the best imo)
* Hi resolution textures
* additional sound patches

Unfortunately, since I'm using Zandronum, until a fix is made I can't complete Final Doom : TNT due to a conflict with the Hi res pack (Plutonia won't work at all). I could simply disable the hi res pack, but I think I'd rather wait.

8.5 / 10.

I don't think this will work with the Master levels for Doom, but hopefully I'm wrong.

Bulletstorm

+ Skillshot system was interesting and gave me an incentive to try different ways of killing rather than just sticking with my favourite weapon.
+ OTT story and characters were fairly entertaining
+ OTT set pieces were fun (lots of destruction as well :) )
+ picked up in Steam sale

- Console influenced controls - spacebar to run was just annoying as default, however as it doubled as 'slide' as well, using Shift was not very good either due to this (and no jump)
- Can only carry 3 weapons at a time and didn't notice anyway to get back to a weapon I had dropped earlier in the game (eg. I dropped the sniper rifle around 2 thirds through, didn't find another one again) - of course, I may have missed something
- Wasn't particularly long (maybe 6hrs and I wasn't rushing it) - a couple more hours would have been good.

overall 7/10

Skylanders Giants with my Son, I would rate it as a 8.5/10.

Its fun and mildly addictive game play, easy to pick up and has a fairly fun story line.

The bad things for me were that the final boss fight view point is shockingly bad, the game itself is a little short and gameplay can be repetative.

Ps. yes i know its not a Pc game but I never seem to finish them O except SC2 recently, 9.5/10 very enjoyable.

Crysis 3

Pretty decent story, took me around 7 hours, the best looking game i have EVER seen, certainly pushing into next gen territory, now the multiplayer to look forward to.

8.5/10 - purely down to length, i didn't find the game lasted long enough to utilize/explore any of the nanosuit upgrades properly.
