The last game you completed, and rating.

It's been a while since I completed any game, but my last one was Scanner Sombre.
I found the game play innovative and it got my heart racing a couple of times, but I'll not say any more to try not and spoil it.
It had the right kind of length for me, and left me wanting more, yet if it was longer I think I'd have gotten bored.
I'll give it a solid 8/10... and it's only £5

I finished Generation Zero last night. Bit torn on how to evaluate it. The early to mid-game was really good then it kind of tailed off.

At first all the machines roaming the world were really threatening, you constantly felt totally ill-prepared to take on the threat they posed - just like a barely-trained teen protagonist would be. So, I was creeping everywhere, tensely listening to the noises of machines passing, trying to figure out where there were, hoping I wasn't spotted. I only enaged when I could plan the encounter, set traps and ambushes and have a route of retreat open. Great atmosphere!

Then, you get some more skills, weapons and equipment and the bulk of the machines become enemies you can take on okay (albeit they can still kill you very, very quickly). The game introduces some hulking monster machines that are still tough(ish), but I found they were more tedious ammo-sinks than real threats for most of the mid-game. I was avoiding them because I couldn't be bothered fighting them rather than because I was scared of them, which was not the same in terms of tension.

By then end-game it was all getting a bit repetitive, to be honest. You have to find region quests in the same maze of bunkers with the same assets, almost the same layouts and the same "find out how to turn on the power" set-ups. You notice that all the houses, all the towns, all the buildings are all the same everywhere. And enemies just appear in bigger groups. I got through the last few hours by just hacking a stray low-level enemy whenever I saw a group and running past all the others as they started fighting. Kind of cool that you could avoid combat so consistently (the game only very rarely forces you to fight if you don't want to), but also a bit of a reflection of how I was getting tired of emptying clip after clip into the same machines.

So, really good for a while, fairly enjoyable for a while after that, and a bit of a slog by the end. About a 6.5/10, I guess.

Metaphor Refantazio - 8/10 - A fantastic JRPG from Atlus, but it didn't hit the heights of Persona 4 or 5 for me with regards to to story and characters, despite being very good. The battle system was excellent too, but Shin Megami Tensi V did that better IMO. Well worth playing though, I'd play it again. Highly recommend to any Atlus fans who haven't gone for it already.

Black Ops 6 campaign. It was fun for the most part - the boat assassination level was a real standout. The ending felt very rushed though - not sure if they ran out of time or budget, but it felt like they had to cut a chapter.

Space Marine 2. Got way more interesting after the bug swarm but despite being a big 40k fan, I had to drop to easiest just to speed my way through it. 5/10 for me

Half Life 2

With the recent attention this has been given I thought I'd go through this again. Even without consideration thats it's a 20 year old game I'd give it a high score.

Absolutely blooming fantastic! I doubt there is anyone left that hasn't already given this a go but just incase... It's a must play!

9/10

Just downloaded and reinstalled it. Not played it in 20 years but I bet it's still awesome as you say

Dead Island 2 - 7/10

It's ok. Brainless forgettable zombie smashing. Could have done with more gameplay variety but other than that it's a good laugh.

Black Myth Wukong - 8/10.

Amazing game where I spent over 80hours but....

Deducted a point for the ridiculously difficult final boss. I was able to fight my way all the way through every boss, got stuck on a few but ultimately was able to find a way and beat them. Got to the final boss but just could not beat him no matter what I tried. That just shouldn't happen and no game is worth that level of frustration. Gave up and installed a cheat just so I could feel like I beat the game as I refused to spend another second of my life fighting the same boss over and over who dodges 90% of my attacks which when they do hit only do tiny amounts of damage. IMO the game would benefit from a rebalance of the final boss as I bet a lot of people hit a brick wall at that point.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite

Finished the campaign in co-op.
Not bad... did finish it... but not sure it has much replayability, as it's all very samey!

Star Wars Outlaws - 7/10

I don't care what anyone says, the game is way better than it's made out to be. They absolutely nailed the Star Wars feel which is what kept me immersed.

I must have spent about 50 hours in it and actually did most of the side content which is quite rare for me.

They hugely improved the stealth mechanics and many other things in later patches. I can understand why a lot of people were put off initially with the overly aggressive stealth system which is a shame.

At release the graphics had some technical issues but with the latest patches it looks and runs absolutely beautifully, one of the best looking games out there imo.

I did have to mod Kay's face though because quite frankly she looks like that kid out of the film with Cher in it.

Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader.

Really liked this game. A well-worked crafting of the 40k grimdark setting, and even though I know a bit about the lore, the game had some moments that brought out the desolation and brutality of the 40k universe in ways that still surprised me. As seems par for the course with Owlcat games, the levelling and stat/skill system is either beautifully or horribly deep, depending on your taste. I had 112 hours in my run, and I don't think it would be totally unrealistic to say that possibly a quarter of that was time spent in the levelling process - reading all of the skill descpriptions, checking synergies with gear and existing or future skills, allocating stat points, etc. I loved all that as was happily able to construct a deliciously overpowered MC and retinue.

Also part of the Owlcat experience is that alongside the depth or writing, world-crafting, detailed RPG mechanics and all the general good stuff, there's some element(s) that I'm going to like a lot less. Here it was the space map and space combat. Not entirely bad, but just far less engaging and a bit annoying. I guess the way timed events work with warp jumps was behind the mechanic that means you have to make each jump on a cross-system journey from star system to star system individually, but hooo boy was that annoying! Colony management was an okay bolted-on element, but felt a bit clumsily integrated really. Ship combat was too shallow and also too long-winded for my liking. Plus the game kept randomly de-populating my ship systems, so I had to quit the battle, go back to the save just before and put the appropriate crew members back in post manually. Ugh!

The good far, far outweighed the bad, though, and even after such a mammoth playthrough I am still missing the game a few days after finishing it. 8.5/10 (would have been even higher but for the odd minor bug still in the game and the space navigation/combat bits).

Currently playing Remnant II. Bought it in the Winter Sales. Have to say I am very surprised. I didn't really like Remnant, but have found Remnant II very good. Some of the puzzles are hard though!!! Definitely a game you want to play with someone. Preferably someone who has played it before and has some clue about the puzzles!!

7/10.

Horizon Forbidden West & DLC - 8/10

Probably not as good as the original, but that’s no slight. Can’t wait for the 3rd installment.

Assassins Creed Odyssey (and DLC). 7/10.

Good game and sank about 130 hours into it (I am 4 achievements short of 100% and completed all locations/tasks etc). It could have been shorter had I known some of the "quests" were dynamically generated and so were basically endless.... It did help me finish on lvl 83 mind you

Now about to start Valhalla (incl DLC) which, I believe is even longer .... See you this time next year?
