Dark Soul's: Prepare to Die Edition (PC)

Cheers I've got a Black Knight Sword from Undead Burg after many attempts to kill him, but lack the strength to wield it properly.

Want to try taking out Havel the Rock before moving on to dragon area. But may be coming back with the Drake sword would be more sensible.

Will check out the shield.
You've probably already beaten him by now, but Havel is so easy to beat, as you can repeatedly just backstab him after avoiding one of his attacks. He won't go down easily, but it's safe to do.

Saying that, I recently killed him with one shot while still at Soul Level 1, so my opinion on his difficulty is probably a little skewed :D

Hi Bane, I hope you are enjoying the game a little more now, stick with it!

It is one of my favourites. Here are some pointers in addition to what others have said.

1 - Try and get in the habit of two-handing your weapon when there is an opening to attack, this can increase your damage output significantly. The early enemies in the game leave themselves wide open after a simple block.

2 - Another useful move is to tap dodge followed by light attack. If timed correctly, you will take a jump back (avoiding an enemy attack) followed by a dashing attack forward. Very useful (The counter will depend on weapon type).

3 - You can acquire the Drake Sword without 14 Dex, at 12 Dex you can wield the shortbow. This can be purchased from the undead merchant (male) near the first bonfire in the Undead Burg. The longbow is more difficult to acquire, I wouldn't recommend it for a new player.

4 - In my humble opinion, do not start out trying to level up your strength or dexterity just to wield one particular type of weapon with a high requirement such as the Black Knight Sword. I would personally spend the souls on VIT/END and equipment upgrades first, using a weapon with fairly modest requirements. If you are going to go down the route of the Drake Sword, it starts out reasonably powerful. I would not spend dragon scales upgrading it however, as these are pretty rare.

5 - Kindle bonfires. To kindle you need to have a spare humanity and be in human form. This will increase the number of estus flasks from 5 to 10 (initially...)

6 - The most important advice that was already mentioned, try your best to avoid the temptation of looking up a wiki guide or suchlike, a massive part of the experience is trial and error and the sense of accomplishment when you succeed.

7 - Prepare to Die.

:)

Don't forget that this trick has no effect if you're using Lightning, Fire or Chaos based weapons, as it removes the stat scaling from the weapons themselves, so you'll do the same damage whether you 1 or 2 hand the weapon.

Don't know if anyone saw my post a couple of pages back about the one shot boss challenge I'm attempting, but I have to very proudly boast that I somehow just managed to one-shot Ornstein and Smough (one shot each), while only Soul Level 27. Admittedly I died as Smough did, but a death is a small price to pay for a successful one shot on those gits. I'm very happy now :D

Woah, that's epic! What were you using to kill them at SL27?!

I used a combination of Crown of Dusk, Red Tearstone Ring and Power Within to get a major damage boost (somewhere in the region of an extra 110% I think it works out to). Then I used a fully upgraded Pyromancy Glove to throw a Great Fireball at Ornstein, which hit him for 1902 damage, then I used Chaos Storm to hit Smough for 4405 damage. I'm just glad I was able to get back to my bloodstain after dying, as I'm currently carrying over 300k souls and don't want to spend them just yet. According to the challenge rules I can now level up another 18 times as I have that many points spare, but I'm not 100% sure whether I'm going down the Intelligence or Faith route yet.

Can any point me to a really good detailed guide?

This sounds silly, I have racked up SOOOOOOO many hours and I have still only touched the surface! Never even been in most of the places!

Hardly been to any places.

The two wikis are my favourite places for info...

If you're after anything specific just fire away with any questions, and I'll answer what I can. I think I've done virtually everything in the game now so I know it pretty well :)

That's the beauty of the game though! On your first playthrough, play blind without walkthroughs n' tutorials, it's much more enjoyable that way.
But I can see where your coming from though, stick to wikis for info, not full fledged walkthroughs of the entire level

I'd agree with that completely. There are so many shortcuts to find as well, it's fun just exploring them and seeing what parts of the game are skippable.

Haha this is sounding good!:D
and yeah, like you said above, exploring is so much fun, I'm trying a PVP build and the game lets you skip the depths and blightown entirely if you just want to quickly ring the second bell, it's pretty cool
There's so much you can skip I'm still trying to find all of it. I know that from the moment you arrive in Lordran, you can pretty much run straight to the Bellfry Gargoyles without killing any other boss, then run straight to Queelag after that. If you're good enough to beat them with base level equipment, you could have both bells rung inside 20 minutes or so.

I found a lovely shortcut in Duke's Archives as well which lets you skip the first meeting with Seath, and vastly reduces the time you spend there. It's incredibly tricky to get right, but worth spending the time to get right.

Yea, I am chickening out a little haha.

Well, I will tackle The Depths tonight, urgh, which I hate haha.

Then after them, I go do the forest area to kill the winged boss thing.

I already got my drake sword, I will also ninja the leather armor at the start of the forest area.

I love this game as I went into the blight town (?) where the ghost are and just ran out again, I have NEVER been there. Also, this new character got the master key (pyro), and I unlocked the door down the lift from firelink shrine, I was walking along the vally and bumped into a HUGE dragon thing. Never seen that before, also I seem to be able to go into an area which is where I last left off on my old character, the place where all the attacks (darts?) are poisoned?

I know so little lol.

Can someone just give me advice on what order I should be attacking areas? Think thats the best lol.

No man, this is the beauty of the game working out the best order that you can do things hehe. God I love this game, I was in the same boat as you when I first played it but after 30 odd hours I restarted and did things right :p

A very rough order should be something like this....

Firelink Shrine -> Undead Burg -> Kill Taurus Demon -> Undead Parish -> Kill Belfry Gargoyles and ring first Bell of Awakening - > Lower Undead Burg -> Kill Capra Demon -> Depths -> Kill Gaping Dragon -> Blighttown -> Kill Queelag and ring second Bell of Awakening

If you took the Master Key you can skip several of those steps by using some shortcuts, but I would recommend using the above as a general idea of what order to do things, simply as each boss will get harder as you go, but your skill will improve, and your characters level will improve as you go through.

As you get better at the game you'll begin to understand how to beat things easier, and how you can make the game much easier on yourself by doing certain things out of order, but I would suggest following the above as a very rough guide on how to go about things slowly.

I have played it loads! Thats the annoying thing, I played before the patch stopping the darkroot forest farming bug. I am overly cautious in this game haha. I just need to suck it up and play!

Done all the above bar Queelag previously, and farmed before her, so thats no problem then, will do that :)

But what about the other areas?

Another tip, do not worry about losing your soul stash. There is a very, very easy place to grind up souls in the Painted World. Once you get access to that area all your soul worries are over and you can spend more time enjoying the game not worrying about trying to hang on to your souls, though admittedly, you can't get lost humanity back easily this way, not that that really matters either.

edit: plus, the dark forest soul grinding bug was alive and well in my game.
