Dark Soul's: Prepare to Die Edition (PC)

How the hell did you even lure Havel outside? He'd un-aggro if I tried to get him out either of the doors.

I was very low level and was getting one-shotted by him while doing 14dmg a pop, I managed to get him to the top of the spiral where he'd start to back up at the door, I lobbed an arrow at him and then he'd chase me to the next door and stay there a while trying to hit me, I could get two arrows in him before he backed to the far door, I'd enter the tower and aggro him again before he went too far down the stairway, rinse and repeat, but then he actually came out of the tower which took me by surprise, so I panicked and went sprinting away to try and reset him (He was at 15-20% HP by now...), he tried to follow and fell down off the stair by the broken wall, he landed on the ledge below and then walked off this ledge when I was trying to find a spot to shoot more arrows at him :(

Is Havel the guy just before the second boss down the stairs?

Think I spent about 6 hours trying to kill him face to face, **** that was hard

Yup, he's a bitch if you don't use the back stabbing technique!

Yeah, those 6 hours were they back stabbing technique hahaha

God I suck, but one mistake or get in too close and you're dead.

Also spent ages rolling when circle strafing is waaaay better

Picked up the retail copy Wednesday after the 'ospital, it's pretty nice.
Anyway, loving the game, but my friend told me to kill the sunbro guy for his armour, big mistake, apparently he comes in handy later down the road, sigh, so I created a new game (I got upto blighttown aswell).
Playing Knight with master key, just about to fight boss, where do I get the bow again so I can shoot the dragons tail and get drake sword?

Also, in my last playthrough, I found the Bell Gargoyles super hard compared to the other bosses I encounter later, where they supposed to be super hard?

Man dont know if it my dvd drive being cr*p or if it meant to take this long, took ages (20 mins) just to get to the install menu, before actual install. Ended up just crashing out and putting the code into steam and doing the install from there. One of the few occassions that i had to use my DVD drive.

Downloaded the whole thing via steam in 10 mins :D

Anyway any good tips to tweak the game, heard there mod to fix the gfx and controls or something right?

DSFix is the graphics fix. Really easy to use and makes the game looks great. I'd also recommend using a controller but if you're set on playing with M&KB there's a mouse fix out there too.

Thanks for that, i bought a controller just for this game. Ended up getting controller and not the game in the end cause i missed the deal at the time. Anyway finally got my copy :D

Just loaded it up and installed all the prerequisites. It loaded in window for some reason, should i install the fix and then configure??

As I recall (it's been a while since I did this), you set the game to full screen mode via the in game options menu, then exit and configure Dsfix to your liking.

Have many of you done any of the various challenge runs in the game? I've been watching Vageta311's Low Level, One Shot Boss Challenge (first video here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=401muykHy4k), where the aim, rather obviously is to try and one shot all the bosses and mini bosses in the game. Rather than just levelling up until you're simply overpowered, you have to earn the right to level up by getting points. You get those points by actually managing to one shot the bosses and mini bosses. You get one point for one shotting a mini boss (so you can level up once), and 2 points for one shotting a main boss. By doing it this way it requires a lot more strategy than simply getting yourself overpowered, as you have to think ahead about the best way to try and kill the future bosses, so you don't waste points levelling up stats that won't actually help you.

So far I've been following the same strategy as Vageta, and have managed to one shot the following....

  • Black Knight in Undead Burg
  • Havel The Rock
  • Tauras Demon
  • Heavy Knight in Undead Parish
  • Parasitic Wall Hugger in Blighttown
  • The Belfry Gargoyles in Undead Parish (one hit per Gargoyle, as allowed)
  • Armoured Tusk in Undead Parish
  • Black Knight in Undead Parish
  • Capra Demon (I ******* hate him because of those dogs with him!)
  • The 2 Butchers in The Depths
  • Giant Rat in The Depths
  • Black Knight in Darkroot Basin
  • Both Black Knights in the Asylum

All of the above was done while still at Soul Level 1, meaning I've not levelled up a single stat since starting the game. I think I've reached the level now where I can't take anyone else out using just melee (I have a +5 Fire Reinforced Club), so now comes the awful grind of getting enough souls to maximise my Pyro Glove (I need roughly 325k souls to do it), as even though I have enough points available to go up 18 levels, I'd rather challenge myself and keep the points in reserve, as I'm not sure whether to go back to melee later on using a huge weapon and weapon buffs, or whether to go down the sorcery route (I think Dark Bead will make the finish pretty easy).

If you're a good player on Dark Souls I highly recommend trying this challenge out. I thought I was a pretty good player having finished it 4 times, but restricting yourself makes for a really good challenge, and some bosses have taken me near 10 attempts to get just right (the Gargoyles mainly, as the first hit has to be perfectly timed). I'm also used to wearing heavier armour and being able to take a few hits, but so far I'm runnnig around in just gloves and some boots, effectively naked, as I need to be quick enough to move around properly. With base level vitality and endurance, it means that you can die easily in only a few hits (something that's happened a little too often to me so far!).

I'm recording my efforts so I can watch what I did right and what I did wrong, and might put up a video on YouTube at some point, if anyone would be interested in seeing it.

Using a 360 gamepad, is there a way to change the button assignments (without 3rd party)?

Or at the very least have a set of button setups to choose from?

Sorry for not reading the thread but whats the general consensus of dark souls on pc? This was a game i wanted but heard terrible things about the port.

Performance wise it's good, and with the DSfix which takes about a minute to get working from the moment you click 'download' it's one of the best lookers too. Definitely worth getting and PC is the superior version despite being a flaky port.

I'd agree with that. Out of the box it's not the best version, but with a few mods (which take minutes to install) it instantly becomes the best version you can get. None of the mods are real game changers, but they all subtly improve the game way beyond the version you get when you install it.

Not in game or non 3rd party as far as I am aware. I used a PS2 pad the buttons were all wrong, so I had to use the 360 pad emulator X360ce, which allows you to remap buttons. Looking at this software it looked as though you could also use it to remap the buttons on an official 360 controller as well.

It was quite simple to use the program, just put in the Dark Souls directory and fiddle with it.

Which buttons do you want to remap anyway? I found it pretty ok once you got used to the default mapping.

I really really REALLY want to get into this game. I've had it on steam since it's release and the issue with the bad porting and the difficulty has never really troubled me, but the sense of utter cluelessness going in just makes me sigh. I'm not one of those gamers that completely lack intuion and will complain if there's not a lengthy tutorial, but it just baffles me. I know it's more a case of having to sit down with it for a while and have a dabble at everyhting.
I'm sure this is part of the attraction for a lot of people, god knows we need a lot less hand holding in the industry. Maybe it's just gonna take a bit of time.

36 times against the Asylum Demon and the most off is only 3 bars lol.

I know your meant to run past him but i can beat him !! :D

You're not using the broken sword are you? You do realise you should run past him, pick up your proper weaponry, then go back and have a real fight with him?

Yeah, it's not always obvious the best way to go at the start, but the clues are there if you talk to the right person. When you first arrive in Lordran the camera focuses on the Crestfallen Warrior, and if you speak to him enough times, he'll give you a clue that your first objective is to ring the ball in the Undead Parish, but the elevator is broken, so you'll need to go up the stairs, through the waterway to the Undead Burg. After you complete certain objectives in the game his dialogue changes as well, so he's always someone worth speaking to if you're feeling a little stuck on where to go next.
