I would have thought Vidal was even less likely than Mata a few days ago (at least Mata is benched and looking for 1st team games consistantly, Vidal already has this in a Championship leading team).

Once Mata is confirmed, other top tier signings will become a lot easier.

If you believe what the press say, then the talking has started (Times):

Real Madrid are weighing up a move for Wayne Rooney as Manchester United were locked in advanced talks with Chelsea to sign Juan Mata for £37 million.

José Mourinho, the Chelsea manager, is understood to have sanctioned Mata’s sale and David Moyes appears willing to break United’s transfer record for the Spain playmaker in a bid to save their season from humiliation.

The clubs were thought to be haggling over the size and breakdown of the fee for Mata, with Chelsea holding out for about £40 million, but United are hopeful of being able to conclude a deal before the Barclays Premier League match at home to Cardiff City on Tuesday.

I can't believe Chelsea are even entertaining the idea of Mata to Man United. Considering they didn't want to loan us Ba why on earth would they let one of the best players in the league go to a competitor?

Fergie put a call into his buddy maureen to do us a favor? ;)

So we're trying to buy a player who doesn't get into our rivals first team, to play the infamous Kagawa position for nearly twice what he cost Chelsea?

Shrewd.

You don't rate Mata? How... Shocking.

"Well the transfers team are working non-stop and are looking great together but we seem to just get unlucky in the transfer department. Also the transfer regulations these days seem to be working against us but I'm confident they can get the results we need"

:p

We'll definitely get the usual spiel.

"David, are you interested in Juan Mata?"
"Manchester United are always interested in top players."
"Is one of them Mata?"
"No."

ut'd don't play chelsea anymore but still the other top teams though that's just short term it could come back to haunt jose next season

And where has anyone suggested what position he plays if he joins. Kagawa plays the traditional number 10.

Mata from what I have seen and Chelsea fans please correct me on this, played a more free roaming role before Mourhinio returned.

Do you ever post anything positive or that brings value to the debate ?

Where in my post does it say I don't rate Mata. I can wait all day for this response.

It's implied. Mourinho doesn't like him or the way he plays which is why he's on the bench. He's a top class player and would drastically improve our side and morale. Simple really.

Do you ever post anything positive or that brings value to the debate ?

Indeed.

You don't always have to bring something positive to a debate. If we all agreed and thought this was a glorious deal while we sit down, hold hands and sing kumbaya I don't think we'd get far.

I'm just pointing out we are about to break the bank for a player our rivals actively want to ditch for 160% of his previous transfer fee to play a position we don't use.

Actually that isnt even close to being true.

2nd ly - Just because we dont use that position now (which is questionable) doesnt mean we cant in the near future

Its not a pre-requisite to bring something positive. It's not really a debate if your view is blinkered either. The tone of your post is negative in that it you suggest a player who can't get a game for Chelsea would be a bad thing.

The balanced opinion is that he has won their Player of the year for the last two years. He takes up intelligent positions, he can use both feet. He has one of the highest completion ratio's in the league Consistently.

He will fit into the mold of a lot of the home grown and youth players at United in that they get coached to play Left Forward, Right Forward, Number 10, False 9, Out and Out striker.

So with the constant baiting from you about our wingers being crap, we're not creative enough, don't make enough chances, then the counter argument is that Mata would help to fill that void.

Im seeing more ticked boxes than unticked boxes for the argument of signing Mata.

Yes and no. Are we sure that 37 milliom represents a good price considering he is about to exit anyway? Where will he play where were our scouts in snooze control when he moved to chelsea?

lile buying berbatov for 30 mill after he had moved for 11 million just 2 seasons previously. somethings make sense. Other times you have to accept that you are buying at the wrong time and have to look elsewhere.

For example sneijder would have been redicolous at 35 million..but everyone here was baying for him. 18 months later he's 12 million or less and we don't bid..ugghhj

There is also a pretty good reason why he ended up in Greece for £12m, because a lot of the other top teams had either tried him and it wasnt working any more or didnt want to risk it.

Just because the press always want to link Utd to buying him, doesnt mean its a good idea

Sometimes, players just appear at the wrong time or like Shaw for instance have no interest in playing for Utd and instead go with another option (if the press are to be believed, which in this case is imo fair enough). Sometimes when a player first comes across (like Berba) they may not be gaurenteed playing time at Utd and so they go for the other option of more likely playing every week

"I'm sick of playing with useless wingers who just drill the ball into the fullback, we need someone like Silva"

United interested in Mata.

"Why would we be buying a sub for another team at that extortionate price OMFGZ!!!!!"

Rinse and repeat.
