As the deal is pretty much wrapped up, what number do we think he'll get, 7? Or should we quickly retire Giggs and give him 11.

Need to get my shirt ordered soon.

Guillem is well connected. He's not always right, but I remember he called Neymar to Barca a year before it happened, for pretty much the exact fee involved.

Not that likely considering the current Barca lawsuit situation ;)

Not sure it's been mentioned in there, but it's starting to look like the Neymar deal cost more like 95million rather than 47mil. Also Santos got seemingly fairly little, Neymar/his dad seem to have gotten 40mil, the club got 17mil directly, they paid something like 8mil each for three players to get the first option on them and some huge fee for a couple friendly games.

When these deals get this complicated it just feels like something very dodgy going on. Tax dodging situation on fee's, certain types of fee's can't be taxed maybe so a transfer gets split into a bunch of separate things but with the same amount of money.

Always seems odd when some dad/brother is heavily involved in these deals and makes more than the son does actually playing......

It's on, it's all on!

Believe it when I see it. Every player has his price, whether Woodward racks up at Stamford Bridge with a bag of Chocolate Gold Coins and £20.00 in Luncheon Vouchers or some proper money to back the deal, and attract a real quality midfielder remains to be seen

Dante, who is 30 and won last season's Champions League, told Fox Sports Brazil: "I'm thankful for the Manchester United interest, it will all be sorted out by the end of the month. We have to wait until 31 January because there is a lot going on."

However with Dante in contract negotiations with Bayern, his agent hinted that the Brazilian may be using United as leverage. "There is no way that is going to happen. There is no agreement with Manchester United. He is not going to leave Bayern in the window," Marcus Marin said.

From sky:

Chelsea are asking for £32 million or with Wayne Rooney as part of the deal. Manchester United have said no to the money and no to Rooney - but I am under the impression that a deal will be reached because it benefits everybody.

Although I don't agree with his point about Mata not fitting with Manu philosophy, I do agree with Neville that he doesn't fit with United current front two unless he get's shoe horned in, which seems a bit pointless. He's not a wide player and they won't spend 30 odd million to have him not play upfront. A great player but not a priority at all. Unless RVP or Rooney is going.

"Does he fit with what I would call the typical philosophy of Manchester United? I would say no.

"The first question, I think, is where are you going to play him? Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie are up top if they are fit so where are you going to play him? Are you going to play him off the left or off the right?

"They would have to change to accommodate Juan Mata in the way they normally play. They normally play with wide players. Sometimes they tuck in, but generally they have wide players and the thing for me is where is he going to play?

"He's obviously a fantastic football player, there's no doubt about that, but one thing it does do, I suppose, is that David Moyes, Manchester United and Ed Woodward need to sign a big player."

The thing is, it gives us a different option.

I see it like this.

------RvP------
----Rooney-----
Mata-----Januzaj
-Fellaini-Carrick-

A 4-2-3-1 if you like similar to what City, Chelsea and Arsenal play. What we've lacked lately (probably the last 3 years) is the ability to mix it up if need be, since the days of Ronaldo/Tevez/Rooney/Berbatov. I would also expect a proper midfielder as well in the future to take the place of Fellaini/Fletcher in the line up.

We can always throw the wingers on if we need width or if we need to blast the ball at their full backs.

This is all if it happens of course but it looks promising.

How much money do we get if we finish 4th and get in the Champions League? I know it isn't wages but Mata could potentially pay for himself, as it'd be a lift to the squad too. It'd also assist summer recruitment. It's a pretty big deal.

Seems like a no-brainer for £32/35/37m, whichever it is.

As you've said above G|mp, playing a front 4 with Fellaini and Carrick as holding midfielders could potentially be very good. I'd like to see it.

Fingers well and truly crossed. We should find something out tomorrow as Moyes will no doubt be asked.

@gimps post

Yes I agree you could play that formation but it won't be that often and RVP, Rooney or Mata will be benched. I can't see Mata moving to united without assurances he would be a starter, not after what's happened at Chelsea.

I can't see United playing that narrow that often and I see Mata further forward, he's not quick enough imo to play where you have him :)

Fellaini is not a Manu quality holding MF. You could buy someone better than him at that job for £5. He was vaguely useful going forward for his 5 games per year.

Then that's what we'll do if he's no good. He hasn't had that much of a chance so far.

Manyoo would need width from their fullbacks... more so than when they currently play. Is Evra good enough to provide that? Is the Coentrao deal happening? What happens if Rafael is missing for any given game?

Evra is, he just can't defend. :p

I'm sure we could cope the odd game if Rafael was missing... he is quite injury prone though it seems.

Like I said it's another option to what we have now.

There is also no assurances that Rooney will even be here next season, it's all about the option to change formation if needed which we don't have now.

The front 4 options with that formation would be tasty.

-------RvP-------
Kagawa -Mata-Nani

-------RvP-------
Nani--Mata--Januzaj

------RvP-------
Mata--Kagawa-Nani

That is all without Rooney, add Rooney to that (if he stays) and you have lots of options. All interchangeable.

Our fullbacks give us plenty of width?

Adnan---Rooney---Mata

---Fellaini-----ANother

Thats how I see us lining up. It takes pressure off Fellaini, Carrick, Fletcher and possibly Cleverly to be box to box midfielders as well as the creative spark.

Also gives Moyes the opportunity to say Jonesy is first choice CB. No more fannying with this midfield guff. Otehr spot is up for grabs unless he buys Dante/Garay

What I find a bit weird about the Mata to MU situation is presumably Chelsea would rather he went abroad, and the player is foreign so presumably not that fussed about returning to the continent. Just a question of whether MU bid so high that Chelsea take the cash rather than a much lower offer from elsewhere. Likewise accommodating him at MU may not be straightforward - I think Fabregas would have been the perfect fit but that never seemed to get off the ground.

I suppose the point someone made earlier about now being a good time to send him to MU holds some merit (MU not a rival this season, potential to take points of rivals, no games left against MU)

ESPN's article on Mata: http://espnfc.com/news/story/_/id/1...ted-closer-transfer-chelsea-juan-mata?cc=5739

Manchester United are hopeful of securing a deal for Chelsea's Juan Mata by this weekend, sources at both Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge have told ESPN.

United officials have remained in London over the last two days to conduct negotiations for Mata and one other "European-based central midfielder" -- believed to be Juventus' Arturo Vidal.

They're just taking the **** with that second part. :(

should give the 40 and be over with it utd make that back in 1/3 of a season from current profits ignoring the warchest that's supposed to be 100+

"Well the transfers team are working non-stop and are looking great together but we seem to just get unlucky in the transfer department. Also the transfer regulations these days seem to be working against us but I'm confident they can get the results we need"

:p
