amg's would be hard to find under 15k but they do go for less sometimes. but I'd say there out of your budget in most cases.

Lotus Carlton, Audi RS2, M5, Holden HSV would be my top picks! :)

Dont go near the Holden HSV. Its way overpriced in the UK and ive heard BMWs are much safer and much better in all areas

Can tell they are off the top of your head some of those figures look a bit dubious :p

yeah it goes without saying bmws build is better than holdens but some people like to be different :D

Lotus Carltons have been dipping under 15k for quite a while, you can snag an Omega Lotus carlton for 12-13k, and there certainly not as rare as you may think.
I'm just trying to add sum interesting options is all :)

Isn't that more in the 7's for 0-62? Fast enough for most people, but not if you want something close to 5s :)

MrLOL, I was in the same boat as you when my daughter was born. We needed something with enough space to cart the myriad of stuff needed to run a small baby. We were pretty skint having just bought a house so we got a 1993 BMW E30 estate. Cracking car but very underpowered.

Once the nipper was a little older and we had some cash to spend on a car, I bought my Impreza. Still 4 doors so she can get in the back ok and we chopped the beemer in and bought an astra as the baby/long distance wagon.

I guess you've got a short list of cars now so you'll have great fun testing them all out. I would suggest that if you walk into most dealerships with 15K in your back pocket, they'll fall over themselves to sell you a car :)

Good luck.

Yea, probably becuase it's nowhere near quick enough perhaps?

I love the way people seem to think T5's and T6's are some sort of Ferrari beating uber car of doom :p They are great and I like em but come on guys ;)

lol?

But how many FWD/RWD sports cars actually have the same sort of power as 'those 4 wheel drive cars'

Not many!

why lol?

its becomming increasingly more common for a FWD car to have >200bhp.

its typical motor forum posting in here as usual :D

Dont get me wrong Im not attacking AWD, it would be my choice over FWD anyday.
Its just very shallow to base car choice on 0-60 time, Im simply trying to expand the original posters thinking.

On my daily drive I use the motorway and so 60-80mph performance is more important than 0-60 to me.
Trust me I know, its lacking in my car and I really notice it. :(

As said by someone at the start, the Galant VR4 is a great car. A manual should see 60 in about 5 seconds.

However, its under the budget.

A cracking one is about £10k.

Performance wise... it ticks the boxes.

In my experience 4wd only benefits you up to around 60mph - then driveline losses will allow 2wd cars to gain ground. Those Volvo T5s only really started shifting over 60mph - when I drove my mate's T5 Coupe after jumping out of my Audi S2, it felt like a slug but was ok once up to decent speeds. Really comfortable seats and nice interior, though handling was a bit all over the place. To get any sort of decent 0-60 times in the Audi you had to terrorize the clutch - 6k rpm and side step it :S

That said 4wd allows you to drive up snowy hills while everyone else is rolling backwards, and wet weather grip is amazing. These days I struggle to get traction in my diesel till about 50mph if the road is slightly damp :S

Those Merc alternatives seem quite interesting - big engine, go forever, well built etc, and discreet. Usually come with all the toys and have maybe been driven by some old fella or a rich housewife, so not been abused. Also lose a packet in first few years so a bargain 2nd or 3rd hand.
