Dont get me wrong Im not attacking AWD, it would be my choice over FWD anyday.
Its just very shallow to base car choice on 0-60 time, Im simply trying to expand the original posters thinking.

On my daily drive I use the motorway and so 60-80mph performance is more important than 0-60 to me.
Trust me I know, its lacking in my car and I really notice it. :(

i dont do much motorway driving. Most of my driving is done on roads with 30/40/50 limits. Thus a car that can do quick standing starts (good 0-60) and with good grip levels (4wd) is ideal for me. And when i do drive on the motorway, ill never need the acceleration, as i spend most of my time cruising at 80 in the outside lane moving over ocassionaly to let BMWs past lol

and i dont see the problem in requiring a car that has quick acceleration. I want a car thats fast, and 0-60 is a good yardstick of this. If any1 knows anywhere that keeps a range of mid speed times (40-60 etc..) then ill gladly have a look. But manufacturers dont seem to keep this kind of info.

anyway, my shortlist looks something like this :

'03 Impreza STI
E39 M5
Early Audi S4

had a look at forrester 2.5 XT. Just doesnt do it for me in the same way the M5/S4/STI do.

Found this on auto trader :

E39 M5 :

2000 BMW M5 5.0 V84 Doors, Manual 6 speed, Saloon, Petrol, 116,000 miles, Le Mans Blue, MOT-09-2006, 1 Owner. Full Caramel Nappa Leather, uprated stereo. Massive specification including climate control, cruise control, etc etc. "M5" private plate. Full Main Dealer service history, this is a one driver car from new. (Stock No. 66) Portway Motor Centre. The UK's Largest Vehicle Brokers £13,950

and loving this impreza on pistonheads :

And only 1 S4 on auto trader under 25k. And that was in a horrible navy colour :(. Only 7 results found for an S4 in total. None on the audi network under 30k. Looks like im not exactly going to be spoilt for choice for S4s

I personally wouldn't spend £14k on a 116,000 mile M5, there are a few S4's around, but not a huge amount.

There's a 2001 Avant, 42k miles, on Autotrader for £15k.

there are more saloons around though, and they seem a little cheaper :)

with the current state of the market for used Imprezas he's going to have to seriously cut the price to shift it no matter how nice it is

what sort of price should he be selling at

notice the JDM STI in the link above this is having trouble selling too.

My car ( 2004 reg , 53 plate ) 37k miles and just gone for £12.5k in p/ex , privately 2 year old cars ( that sell ) are fetching around £13.5k and £14k with PPP , this is for average miles , it's very depressing ( unless you are buying of course )

that one is worth about £14.5k as it has high spec and is in great condition

re the Jap one andi posted , 52 plate for £16k , he is seriously deluded

Probably becuase you view it is just another BMW, when infact it's a 4 door supercar pretty much.

Which I guess, however, means huge running costs..

exactly!

people sacrifice performance for mileage and age all to often, think that is what separates the avid car nuts from the norm when price becomes a factor

Have not read the whole thread and don't know if a cars ages is of bother to ya........but how about a lotus carlton :)

needs to be 4 door family sized car. Mx5 etc.. are totally out of the question as im going to struggle to afford anything decent, let alone 2 cars.
Didn't you say you had 15k to spend?

manufacturer's 0-60 times not "google search 0-60 results" :p

Manufacturer's 0-60 times are notoriously wrong in many cases, I prefer to go by road tests by independent journalists, plenty of those times don't tally with what I've read.

Anyway 0-60 is irrelivent its in-gear 30 > 50 times that have far more meaning on the open road.

0-60 times are suitable for pub talk, little else.

:p

You don’t need to tell me that, I'm only doing as the thread title requested :)
Yeah what you say is of course true. Although 30-70 would separate the beasts from the close ratio cheats :D.
In all honesty I personally wouldn’t use these criteria’s to choose a car.

ESCORT COSWORTH?!?!?

Am I being silly?
I was going to say that! :p Or a Sierra (Sapphire) Cosworth, stage 1 conversion (or stage 2) - you could get a mint (probably low mileage as well) one for 7 - 10k.
It's said that they are better on fuel after they had the stage 1 conversion as well - how true this is I don't know.

I think it would be unfair to recommend cars that require tuning to get them to meet requirements.
although I love the sapphire cosworth and would love to tune that yb turbo motor
