10GB vram enough for the 3080? Discuss..

For my use case, (4K/90fps VR sim racing) the GPU itself is the weakest link.

I'm stuck at medium-ish settings and less than 7gb vram allocation.

Personally can't say I've noticed any issues whatsoever with my 3080 @ 1440P 144HZ and 4k60 (recently been playing RDR 2, gta 5 redux with mods, cyberpunk, div 1 and 2, swbf 2).

As already said, for most gamers, the lack of sheer grunt will become a problem before VRAM is the issue.

The only game where I have seen anywhere close to 10GB VRAM at 4k60 is division 2, hovers around 9.5GB (max settings) but is nice and smooth (using vsync locked to 60)

That's because you are an EXTREME use case scenario. For 99% of PC gamers a 3080 or 6800 XT is MORE than good enough.

I was simply reminding people that vram is not the only thing limiting settings in games.

Much of this discussion seems to forget that GPU horsepower (or the lack thereof) can and will limit what settings can be used in games.

In fact, it has been THE reason I had to turn down settings with every GPU I have ever owned.

Sure, a 10gb buffer makes vram more likely to force lowered settings than in the past, but I don't think it moves to the top of the list....I still think GPU horsepower is still most likely to hold back the card. (And I have already experienced it with the 3080)

No..

"Bottom line is that if you game at 4k and want to max most or all settings, then 10GB is not enough. V-RAM gets eaten up like it's nothing at high resolution with max settings. And thanks to the 450w BIOS for the FTW3, you can stay over 60 FPS in most games and are limited only by the 10GB's of V-RAM."

Guy in that thread is talking nonsense, 4K is an extremely demanding resolution and GTA V settings can be turned up beyond what current cards are capable of regardless of their VRAM. He didn't bother providing any proof of his claims nor exactly what settings he used so how can we be sure he did his due diligence?

If I turn up settings so everything is at max except frame scaling off, MSAA at 4X, Reflection MSAA at 4X at 2160p then I cannot even stay above 60fps in the grassy sections of the benchmark. If I head out to the hills near vinewood sign then fps drops into the 30s while using 5.6GB VRAM. Ultra grass. :)

Many users report that they see 11GB of VRAM used on their older cards and not at 4K but at 3840 x 1444 or something resolution.

You get lower performance even when the VRAM usage is slightly under its 100% saturation level.
The VRAM should be at least 20-30% free in order to get the best performance.

4k resolution = bad draw distance and rendering.... still in 2021

kinda sucks that we still have this issue with the latest graphics cards. you would think that the game developers would add in a slider that lets the draw distance be added at a longer distance.

I'm playing A C Valhalla maxed out at 4k and its driving me nuts that when I am moving around all the plants and trees and everything in front of me is being draw before my eyes.....

If Games like MF sim 2021 can solve the issue then so can other new titles. maybe its just be me because 4k is so sharp and I play on 55" screen I notice everything.

It is very possible that the game at 2160p maxed out uses way more than your 10GB, the driver drops the rendering in order to offset that VRAM deficit.

Good example is the rtx3060 due out soon with 12gb memory and a very real world lack of horsepower.

Allocates, not uses.

yes and no, black ops does have some use for it - thats why you can select your allocation, you can reduce or increase the vram allocated in the menu, it affects loading, texture quality, texture pop in, draw distance etc

its becoming more common now for games to dynamically scale image quality for VRAM, cause we have such a wide variety of VRAM on new cards - developers don't want to restrict themselves to the lowest common denominator, especially when that lowest denominator is worse than a console so they're making games that run better when you have higher VRAM and vice versa.

Well the good news is that the majority of people don't ever have to worry if 10Gb is enough or not on the 3080 because the vast majority of people will never be able to buy one. :p
