Care to explain?
This was tested on the same system but the only difference is the graphics card, what does storage have to do with it. Unless you are implying that the person who decided to run this test also decided to switch the install directory for his game from an SSD to a HDD, to make the 8GB card look bad?

You are also implying that if both games are running on the same storage system there should no difference in LOD between the two graphics cards. If you click through to the album it is clear that certain items are just not being loaded in at the same LOD levels.

But most importantly storage speed only matters when you need to swap data. You only need to swap data when you run out of VRAM. Therefore it is a VRAM problem first, a storage speed problem second. That is also assuming that the game decides not to preload certain assets into system RAM.

Didn't even hit 8GB :p

Maybe read again

That appears to be what happens when using a slow storage system, e.g. HD instead of SSD, and amplified at times due to low system RAM. This is the issue that Direct IO/RTX IO is aiming to solve. It may be more apparent when using a GPU with lower VRAM due to assets being swapped more frequently. The only way to solve it with current game design would be to create cards with more VRAM than games have texture data, or to put it another way, this will still happen no matter how much VRAM you have until game design makes use of Direct IO/RTX IO.

Also interesting to read that the December 8th patch had some fixes due to VRAM and graphical errors.

Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition for PC - Patch 1.09 is now available

Hi everyone,

We’re happy to announce that Patch 1.09 for Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition is now live! This patch introduces crash fixes and performance improvements that were reported by our community.

You can find the Known Issues and full Patch Notes for Patch 1.09 below; if your issue isn’t among them, you can continue to send us your reports here. Please update your game and let us know what you think!

– Guerrilla

Known Issues
  • Some players are experiencing performance issues on specific GPUs or hardware combinations.
  • We're aware of and continue to investigate issues that are not yet solved on both the player-compiled lists by u/EvilMonkeySlayer and u/Rampage572 – thank you!

Patch Notes
Crash Fixes

  • Fixed a crash that could occur when switching resolutions
  • Fixed a crash that occurred during the cutscene during main quest “The Face of Extinction” after objective “Defend The Ridge”
  • Fixed a cause of GPU hangs on certain combinations of GPU/driver/memory

Performance Improvements
  • Improved the automatic Shader Optimization step in the menu – The optimization step *message* should now show less frequently on mid-/higher spec machines (please note you are also able to skip it on most machines!)
  • Added a VRAM Gauge that indicates amount of VRAM available and used, to help you optimize graphical settings for your hardware
  • Fixed RenderTarget aliasing, which reduces VRAM usage which may improve performance, texture quality and model quality

Graphical Improvements
  • Fixed HDR looking washed out on certain HDR configurations
  • Fixed Depth Buffer Copies which should fix multiple graphical glitches
  • Fixed graphical glitches due to RenderTarget aliasing not working correctly
  • Fixed that fog turned off when you turn off shadows in graphical settings
  • Fixed plant simulation at frame rates higher than 30FPS

Gameplay Improvements
  • Fixed that holding W when looting no longer stops registering other keys until release

Other
  • Fixed several warning message localization issues on Windows
  • Improved the benchmark results screen

I'm not sure if @tommybhoy will want to jump in here as this was a private conversation offline, but he has mentioned that frame times on the 3070 can be all over the place once you get near to 8GB utilisation, which was similar to what I saw with the 5700 XT in a few games that used lots of video memory.
Was that when I told you my 3070 has the body of 8pack with Mr Muscle's legs?:D

When the 3070 gets to 7.5gb+ it can be all over the place, it's not pretty at times, even on old titles like COD WWII.

For a card with the gpu performance of a 2080ti, having to turn down settings is pretty poor-but it was a 3070 or nothing due to availability, I new what I was getting into.

@TNA Matter of when not if for the 3080, pm me your address and I'll post you some lube.:p

Haha. By the time that happens next gen cards will be around the corner if not here ;)

Thanks for the offer, but no need for lube here :p

Lol... @TNA has the talc dont waste time on lube! ;)

Keep in mind the bandwidth difference (not to mention compression tech differences vs AMD). 5700 XT & 6800 are both 256 bit GDDR6. The 3080 is 320bit GDDR6X. You need both a 3080 & a 3070/3060 Ti to compare if you want to "debunk" the initial post I linked to showing the difference.

poneros is right compare on a 3060 ti/3070 and 3080 for a true apples to apples test. id even go as far as to say make all the vram speeds equal too.

Well I've seen this texture reduction in Assetto Corsa Competizione. Just got a RX6800 and it was the first thing I noticed the nice high res textures when at the back of a large grid of cars instead of the usual low res ones I got with my GTX970. Dunno if it's a game thing, an engine thing (ACC runs on UE4) or Nvidia driver shenanigans but the difference was obvious.

Thanks for the feedback, we'll add that to the list of games.

Time for an upgrade to a 6800 XT, if we can find you some stock. :o
