10GB vram enough for the 3080? Discuss..

Not a good thing when you worry about 10GB being enough for 1440p use. Not much one can do, either buy or wait for cards with more vram.

It's annoying though because I am almost certain that if stock even initially seems good I think these might sell out, more so because of the current situation..

So you buy one hoping 10GB is enough or potentially miss out for a little while.

It doesn't matter if you only have a 1080p or 1440p monitor as with a fast enough GPU you can use render scaling to render the game at 4k or above ;)
If the card doesn't have enough Vram to do this then i guess it be like hitting a brick wall :D
So there is no such thing as lower textures? Not like there is two texture settings, Ultra and Ultra Crap. There are many in between and one below ultra would be very good and work just fine, so no brick wall ;)

VRAM also is useful if you like modding games too, which is one of the advantages of PC gaming (console modding is much more limited).

I hardly ever do it myself. I may have added a few to Witcher 3 ages ago, but vram usage was still low as I recall. Did Skyrim also a long time ago, but again never had any Vram issues.

I have once you start adding more of the 4k/8k texture mods, enbs, etc to fallout 4. We are talking about a few 100 mods, and vram usage is on the edge. It also ends up being so storage dependent an SSD is required, and sometimes it will go past sata bandwidth with reads. I kind of dialed it back on my next set of mods now! :P

A game dev commented on a YT video I just watched. Hope I can summise correctly but basically said average VRAM useage has only gone up 2-3Gb over the last Decade or so.

Allocation and NEED are very different and if a game where truly needing 8-10Gb it would be poor coding/optimisation.

He predicted 8 GB at 4k AAA titles will be fine for 3-4 years at least.

The thought of turning down settings on my new, pride and joy £700+ GPU actually makes a little bit of sick rise from my stomach and enter my mouth.
No. just no.

I'm happy to turn down settings 12 months later but not at launch of a flagship product that should be able to handle anything you throw at it. Esspecially at 1440p.

At 1440p you most likely won't. At 4k though settings will have to be turned down within the first 12 months,

I am like 99.9% sure I won't need to turn it down on any of my games in my steam library. Between now and the release of the 4080 I can't imagine I will need to do it more than a handful of times either. Also all 3 of the titles I am looking forward to playing most have DLSS so at worst case scenario I can use that at 1440P to upscale to 4K. I hear it looks much better than 4K anyways, lol :p:D

Just to clarify again, I am not happy with the 10GB, would have preferred 12 or 16 but I can live with it due to the big performance leap over the 2080Ti. By the time it becomes a big issues I will be rocking a different GPU, so not ideal, but also not a huge concern.

The problem is that people are overhyping themselves believe in that 10GB is enough. In the very near future it won't be.

If it's true nvidia will replace these cards with the ti variant they can only get mad at their lack of self-control for not waiting..
