1366 X58 Xeon 5650

I picked my 5650 up last week from a seller on the bay who had about 60 server pulls for sale. Got it for £60. The rest of his stock vanished within a day or so once word got round.

Total bargain I have to say, clocks so easily and yet in daily use it runs a good 20-30 deg C cooler than the i7 920 did at the same clock speed.

I need to get Ram at some point as well for this build, what's everyone using or recommend getting? Since x58 is triple channel.

Hoping to pick some ram off MM cheap.

Cheers.

Everyone has been talking about using flex mode for memory just using the x58 boards in dual channel mode with one of the readily available kits, I have been on the lookout for cheap DDR3 4x4GB kits

'Flex Mode' gives all the benefits of triple channel with the first three sticks running in that, plus the additional stick runs in a special type of single channel mode which works hand in hand with the triple channel stuff. I'm running 4x4Gb of Corsair Vengeance at the moment and have bee n for some years on my previous i7 set up.

Ah right, Out of interest if I wanted to run triple channel could I just throw 6 sticks of the same brand that's being sold as Dual channel?

But as far as running 4 sticks, any type of 1600MHz ddr3 ram will do yeah?

Triple channels just means the relevant slots are populated, doesn't matter on the brand* or whether they are defined as single, dual or triple channel sticks.

*provided they all work together, even if not the same speed but voltage parity between them is important

Check THIS THREAD I started a ages ago on the subject, most X58 based systems can run in 'Flex Mode' with 4 sticks of RAM fitted which gives you Triple Channel mode as normal for the first three sticks and the 4th stick runs in a type of single channel mode. There are images in the above thread describing it and what slots the RAM sticks need to go in, its related to an Asus mobo but may well apply to most X58 boards. Hope that helps.

In the end I just went with 2x8 GB + 2x2 GB. 20 GB dual channel and I have one of my original 2 GB sticks spare. Might shove it in my file server since that currently has a 4 GB stick and a 2 GB stick for some reason.

I've got 5 x 4gb sticks in 'triple channel', 6 just isn't stable under any config but happy with more memory than even my video and photoshop editing needs :)

I considered running 5 sticks but every single X58 user manual I could find doesn't mention a 5 stick configuration, so I wasn't sure how it'd work. The implication is that it runs in triple channel for the first 3 sticks, and single (rather than dual) channel for the other two, which is a bit odd.

In any case, I don't think the extra 2 GB will be necessary. :D

My P6T Deluxe has arrived and it looks practically untouched new, and I got it for £60 :D just need to grab a 5650/60 now

Edit

Just had an offer of £60 for a x5660 accepted :D

Water, as I am still waiting on my new GPU block it is being cooled by a 3x120 (old school thermochill) rad.

I am going to put new TIM on it tomorrow as the stuff that is on at the moment is 7 year old MX-2 as I couldn't find my Arctic Silver 5. :(
