1366 X58 Xeon 5650

No problems, yes @ 4.2 and fully loaded just into the 50's. It ran at 4.4 but felt 4.2 was the sweet spot (i use 210 x 20 vs 200 x 21), i think cpu-z reports about 1.35v at the desktop. Prime, occt etc. stable with no issues and a lot cooler than my 930 ever was.

Yep, i fixed some of the voltages (chipset, pci etc.) to there stock settings as per the photos because left on auto the voltage can be bumped by the bios / motherboard.

i was thinking of getting a whole new system like a I5 4670K or a newer I7 system to replace my I7 950 but this is looking more tempting and a lot cheaper as i dont really have the funds to do a full upgrade.

i can get my I7 950 running at 4.2ghz stable

Right folks, tried Sh4rkie's BIOS settings and restarted PC - it threw a wobbly and showed me this message:-

2 hard resets and it reverts back to default BIOS settings - phew!!

So I thought 'Ok, I'll try just changing the BCLK and CPU Ratio to 200 and 20 and up the CPU Voltage to 1.35v and change nothing else. Restarted it after saving that OC profile and it still shows the same error message at boot. Any ideas? :(

!!!! does it behave at stock since the bios message?

Yeah, if I return it back to default BIOS settings it'll boot fine.

Which BIOS revision are you using on yours m8? I'm on 0303 which apparently works fine but I'm wondering if I should update to a later BIOS version?

Someone in the thread a while back had the same error and then said they fixed it, but they don't say how.....:(

Can only get to boot properly if i leave it at default settings, if i try booting just a bit over stock speed i keep getting these weird start up errors..

Boot block compatible ver 0.84.. etc.. bad bios checksum, then if i reboot again i get overclock failed and need to set it back to defaults.

Well got mine working but i must've got a crap chip, won't do 4.4ghz even at 1.4v and temps get to the limits fast even with a triple rad.

Trying 4.0 now but aint got much hope for that either.

Latest bios on mine (it's in the photos)

Try 20 or 21 x 166. Up the voltage to 1.375 as well, my chip would probably do the same if i dropped it to 1.35 as i found with my board it required more bios juice then others but cpu-z always reported a lower value. Did exactly the same with my 930 and these chips can take plenty of voltage :)

It may have been the fact that I was trying to boot using 1.35v CPU voltage, changed that to 1.375 and 21x166 and it boots fine @3.2Ghz. Gonna go back and try your settings again and see what happens. :)

Nope, no dice. Tried the settings for 4.2 again and it did the same. So I reverted back to the 20 x 160 and it boots ok to 3.2Ghz. Went back and upped to 20 x 170 and it gives me the error again. Tried changing it to 190 and 180 but still gives the error.

What's going on?

Take the cpu voltage higher all the way to 1.4v, and increase the qpi a hint as well.

I think it is qpi that related to bus speed stability, only do it a couple of notches as the memory controllers is very sensitive to overvolts.

Ram at 2T?

I'll go try that. I've just updated the BIOS from 0303 to the latest one which you are on, the 0803 revision. Booted to Windows to make sure all was well (always a bit worried when it comes to updating BIOS) and its all good. Will now go and try upping the volts to 1.4 and what would you suggest I put QPI to? I see yours is sat at 1.33750v.

Still find it strange though that some folk with these mobo's can just jump straight in, change the CPU Ratio and BCLK and leave everything else at Auto and get it to boot to 4Ghz immediately but mine is playing silly beggars!

Ram at 2T?

DRAM Timing Mode setting? Your screenies show it at '2N' m8?

For mine to overclock I had to set the uncore clock ratio to x12 which I didn't do with i7.

I also turned off speed boost and use 196 x21 and 1.275v cpu vcore at the min

Try manually setting the memory timings. Mine wouldn't overclock at all until I set the ram timings

Yep, tried that m8, still wasn't happy playing ball though!

w00t!!!! :D

Sorted, using all your settings Sh4rkie and punting the CPU volts up to 1.40, QPI to 1.35. The only thing I did differently was update from 0303 to 0803 BIOS, so I can only assume that was the clincher! ;)

Can you guys take a look through these and let me know if it all looks as it should? Ta. :)

Temperatures are looking good too, my i7 920D0 hit about 40-45 deg at idle at 4Ghz, so this is a nice bonus at 4.2Ghz! :D
