1366 X58 Xeon 5650

So I was thinking, since the X58 platform has the memory controller in the CPU itself would that mean that ECC memory could be used?

I have a gen 1 gigabyte ud5 (oldest version) and a x5660, is it possible that ECC would actually work? if so it would be great as its cheap as chips on the bay.

Anyone had experience with this?

I believe the Xeons do support ECC memory yeah.
 
put my x5650 on the bay place, no interest at all. must be worthless now

You would be surprised, I think people still buy these chips. Problem is with auction sites you don't always have the right person looking and a lot of the time people will just want to buy it and for it to ship straight away rather than bid and wait.

Although saying that the X58 platform is getting on a bit now, there is only so many motherboards around that can take advantage of these chips.

Does everybody go by bios voltage or Windows?

Surely the safe voltage is 1.4V per BIOS?

I'm currently at 4.2Ghz (1.39375 vcore in bios, 1.36v in OCCT.

QPI is at 1.315v BIOS, which seems high to me but I cannot seem to get stable any lower.

CPU PLL is 1.8v (doesn't seem to make a difference to anything).
 
Strictly speaking you should stay within the Intel Specs which clearly state 1.35v as the upper voltage. CPU-Z gives a more accurate voltage reading than the bios settings, only bettered by a Multimeter.

Personally I generally go 0.05v above the Intel Specs (so 1.4v) and have never had any problems in all the years I've been overclocking. You just have to make sure you have good cooling and keep the load temps down. I'm running the X5670 I kindly got from Tribz at 4.6Ghz with 1.4v in CPU-Z. Cooler is a Noctua D14 and load temps just about touch 70c

Wow, what are you using to put it under load? I have the same cooler but my load temps are closer to 85.
 
The BIOS voltage is meaningless as its all in theory and will vary by the condition of the board, power supply, etc. Go with CPUZ.
